Chase Freedom Card Calculator

Card Details & Cash Back Calculator
5% Rotating Categories
5% Lyft

Calculate how much cash back you can earn with the 5% rotating categories featured on the Chase Freedom Card.

The Chase Freedom Card is a great cash back card that features 5% cash back rotating quarterly categories. This means that every quarter, the categories in which you earn 5% cash back for will change. This usually allows you to maximize your cash back using the Chase Freedom for that given category.

Do note that you must activate your 5% rotating category every quarter. These will not activate on there own. Chase usually allows you to do this 15 days before the quarter start up until about 15 days before the quarter ends. If you do not activate the 5% category for the quarter, all purchases will be treated as non-category meaning you will earn 1% cash back. This applies to the Discover IT Card as well.

Bonus Categories

The Chase Freedom Card features rotating categories that change every quarter. The quarters are defined as:

  • Quarter 1 (Q1) - January to March
  • Quarter 2 (Q2) - April to June
  • Quarter 3 (Q3) - July to September
  • Quarter 4 (Q4) - October to December

Every quarter has a combined spend cap of $1,500 in which you'll earn at the non-category rate for the remainder of the quarter after reaching the cap. Chase does not give you the list of quarterly categories for the year like Discover does, but generally the categories are pretty similar every year so you know what to expect.

  • 5% Rotating Quarterly Categories
    • Combined spend cap of $1,500 across all featured categories; earn at non-category rate (1%) after hitting cap.
    • Must activate your rotating quarterly category every quarter. This is not automatic.
  • 5% Lyft
    • All Chase cash back and Ultimate Rewards credit cards feature Lyft as a bonus category.
    • Part of the Chase-Lyft partnership which lasts until March 2022.
    • Quarterly combined spend caps do not apply to Lyft.
  • 1% Non-Category

Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The Chase Freedom Card has a standard sign up bonus of $150 after you spend $500 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening. This is a relatively easy signup bonus if you're running spend through the 5% rotating categories featured on the card.

If you have an Ultimate Rewards Points credit card, you can convert this $150 in cash back into 15,000 Ultimate Rewards Points which makes the sign up bonus worth $187 to $225 depending on which Ultimate Rewards credit card you have. You'll also be able to transfer the points to Chase's transfer partners which will give you 15,000 airline miles or 15,000 hotel rewards points.

Annual Fee

There is no annual fee for the Chase Freedom Card. This means you can earn the full return of the 5% rotating categories each quarter without worrying about fees eating away at your rewards.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the Chase Freedom Card. I recommend adding friends and family if you're trying to maximize the $1,500 per quarter cap this card has.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The foreign transaction fee for the Chase Freedom Card is 3% making this card a bad choice for international spending.

Note: This calculator features a category labeled "5% Rotating Quarterly Categories". My calculators do not yet support cards such as this due to the complexity of the calculations compared to other cards (plus Chase doesn't list their whole year of categories).
