The Discover IT Cash Card is a great card if you don't mind keeping track of it's rotating quarterly categories. Similar to the Chase Freedom Card, the Discover IT's 5% categories change every quarter. This allows you to rake in a serious amount of cash back for everyday categories such as gas, restaurants, and more. The DiscoverIT usually cycles through some very useful categories. On top of earning a lot of cash back, this card offers double cash back the first year so you're looking at a marvelous return the first year of holding the DiscoverIT.
The Discover IT card is a 5% Cash Back rotating category card. This means that every three months (quarter), the bonus categories on the card will change. This card earns 5% on up to $1,500 in purchases during that quarter for that specific bonus category. Below are the rotating categories for Q4 2019 and the entire 2020 year.
Q4 2019: Amazon.com
October 2019 to December 2019 - During Q4, the Discover IT Card earns 5% cash back on Amazon.com purchases. Earning 5% cash back with Amazon is possible with several Amazon cards including, the Amazon Store Card, Chase Amazon Prime Store Card, and Amazon Business Prime AMEX Card in which the latter two also earns 5% back at Whole Foods Market as well as cash back in other categories. If it's your first year of having the card, you will earn double cash back for a total of 10% on Amazon purchases which is unobtainable with any other rewards card.
Q1 2020: Grocery Stores, Walgreens, and CVS
January 2020 to March 2020 - During the first quarter of 2020, Discover IT cardholders will earn 5% cash back on grocery store, Walgreens, and CVS purchases. For those who shop at either Walgreens and CVS, this is a great return on drugstore purchases. Both drugstores also typically sell gift cards which can help you get through that $1,500 cap quicker. As for grocery, earning 5% on a no-annual fee card is superb. This would be a great option for anyone who doesn't have a high earning grocery card like the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred.
Q2 2020: Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft, Wholesale Clubs
April 2020 to June 2020 - Those with the Discover IT Card in the second quarter will earn 5% cash back on gas station, Uber, Lyft, and Wholesale Club purchases. For both Lyft and Wholesale Club purchases, earning 5% cash back is quite hard to beat. Those who enjoy Uber would be better off with the refreshed Uber Visa Card that earns 5% on Uber/UberEATS purchases. When it comes to gas, the Ducks Unlimited Visa earns 5% cash back on gas and sporting store purchases and has no annual fee.
Q3 2020: Restaurants, PayPal
July 2020 to September 2020 - Those who run spend across the Discover IT Card is the third quarter will enjoy 5% cash back on restaurant and PayPal purchases. There are many cards that earn a great return on restaurant spending, but nothing as high as 5% cash back on a no-annual fee card. Earning 5% cash back on PayPal purchases is also pretty nice since that's hard to beat with any other rewards card.
Q4 2020: Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com
October 2020 to December 2020 - During the last quarter of 2020, Discover IT Cardholders will earn 5% cash back on Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and Target.com. Considering that the fourth quarter is known for holiday shopping, this is an easy way to earn some serious cash back. While it's nice to have all of these accessible on the same card during the holiday season, it's easy to obtain 5% cash back on these categories throughout the entire year. You can earn 5% cash back with several Amazon credit cards as a prime member, 5% cash back at Walmart.com with the Walmart Mastercard, and 5% cash back at Target.com with the Target Red Card.
Non-Category Purchases (Any Quarter)
Any purchases outside of the categories above, outside of the time frame of the categories above, or after the $1,500 quarterly max for the category has been hit will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. This can be beat putting spend on any other 1.5%+ cash back card, but if you're looking to stick with earning cash back strictly with Discover, this is your best bet besides the DiscoverIT Miles Card which earns 1.5 miles per dollar spend. DiscoverIT Miles are worth 1 cent each so it's just a 1.5% cash back card in disguise. Do note that the first year bonus will make this equal to a 2% cash back card it's first year offering a solid return.
Old 2018/2019 Categories
Listed below are the categories that have been previously featured on the Discover Card during 2018 and 2019. This can give you an idea of what to expect every year with Discover's rotating categories. While they do add/remove a few categories every year, they tend to stay the same for the most part.

Perks and Benefits
Discover Cashback Match
Discover IT cardholders will have their first year of earnings matched by Discover dollar-for-dollar. This is automatic process that will happen after the first year of having the card, so there's no need to sign up for anything. So if you're able to hit the $1,500 bonus spend cap each quarter, you would earn $300 ($1,500 per quarter * 4 quarters * $0.05 Cash Back). Discover would match that amount and you would earn a total of $600 in the first year of having the card. Since the card doesn't have an annual fee, that's a flat 10% return!
This card offers access to Discover Deals which allows you to get cash back and money off everyday purchases. It's similar to Amex Offers in which you can log in and select a deal/coupon you want to use. You can then checkout using your Discover card to activate and redeem the deal/coupon.
Sign Up Bonus
The sign up bonus for the Discover IT Card, as well as all other Discover Cards, is a full year of matched cash back. This means any cash back you earn during the year will be doubled and deposited into your Discover Cash Rewards balance. That makes the DiscoverIT a 10% rotating cash back card that earns 2% on non-category purchases it's first year. So if you end up maxing each quarters spend cap of $1,500, you'll end up with at least $600 in cash back off the bonus spending.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
There is no annual fee for the Discover IT Card. You will always be earning the maximum amount of return when it comes to chasing the 5% rotating categories.
Authorized User Fee
There is no fee for adding additional users to the Discover IT Card. Discover sticks to similar categories every year, so if you have friends and family that spend in categories such as these, I'd recommend adding them to help reach the $1,500 quarterly cap easier and to maximize cash back.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Discover IT Card does not have a foreign transaction fee. While you will not find many places that accept Discover outside of the United States, it's nice to know that if you do, you will not be penalized for using the card.
5% Cash Back Calculator
Since the bonus categories are per quarter, there is no standard calculator to support comparing the Discover IT side by side with other rewards cards. The calculator below will calculate the cash back you can earn in any given quarter based on spend. Remember that the bonus cap for each quarter is $1,500 ($500 per month) and that any spend after that will earn you 1% cash back for the remainder of that quarter. Once you hit the cap, it's best to switch to a card that earns higher for that category or a 1.5% card like the Discover Miles Card which earns 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all purchases.
You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category. This calculator will also give you the dollar value of the card based on rewards earned and how much each benefit is worth to you minus the fees. You can click the Compare A Card button to compare this card against another card in the same calculator.
All category spend entered in the primary card's column will carry over to all credit card pages on the site so you don't have to re-enter the same information over again.
