The Discover IT Chrome card works well for anyone looking to earn a double cash back on both gas and restaurant purchases that does not want to pay an annual fee. The cash back is easy to understand the redemptions are straightforward and simple. On top of that, as with other Discover Cards, the first year's earning are doubled meaning you'll earn 4% cash back per $1 spent until your anniversary date. Combine this card with the Discover IT Card's rotating 5% categories and you can generate some pretty good cash back throughout the year!
The Discover IT Chrome Card features two bonus categories: gas stations and restaurants. These categories have a combined quarterly cap of $1,500. Once that cap has been hit, both gas station and restaurant purchases will earn 1% cash back for the remainder of that quarter. There is no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn spending on the Discover IT Card. Unlike the Discover IT Card, the categories on this card does not rotate.
2% Gas Station
The Discover IT Chrome Card earns 2% cash back per $1 spent when used at gas stations. This will apply to merchants whose primary business is to sell gasoline which will include places such as Hess, BP, Speedway, and Mobil. While this is a great rate of 4% the first year due to the double cash back, the normal rate of 2% from the second year onward can be beat by several no annual fee cards. This includes the Ducks Unlimited Visa and PNC Cash Rewards Card (4% cash back) amongst many other great gas cards.
Using the Discover IT Chrome Card for restaurant purchases will result in 2% cash back per $1 spent. This applies to both fast food and fine dining establishments. As with the gas station category, the initial 4% cash back earnings are great the first year, but once the second year rolls around you'll earn the normal 2% and that can also be beat by several cards. Both the Barclay Uber Card (4% cash back) and PNC Cash Rewards Card (3% cash back) provides a higher return without an annual fee!
Purchases on the Discover IT Chrome Card outside of the categories listed above will result in earning 1% cash back. While the first year will receive double cash, any spend after the anniversary date will have room for improvement. If you're looking to earn double cash, the Citi Double Cash Card can assist with that. You can also pick up any 1.5% cash back card such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited or the AMEX Cash Magnet Card.
Perks and Benefits
Discover Cashback Match
Discover IT Chrome cardholders will have their first year of earnings matched by Discover dollar-for-dollar. This is automatic process that will happen after the first year of having the card, so there's no need to sign up for anything. So if you're able to hit the $1,500 bonus spend cap each quarter, you would earn $120 ($30 per quarter * 4 quarters * $0.02 Cash Back). Discover would match that amount and you would earn a total of $240 in the first year of having the card. That would give you a total return of of 4% across both categories which isn't hard to do with other great cash back credit cards.
The Discover It Chrome Card offers access to Discover Deals which allows you to get cash back and money off everyday purchases. It's similar to Amex Offers in which you can log in and select a deal/coupon you want to use. You can then checkout using your Discover card to activate and redeem the deal/coupon.
Sign Up Bonus
The sign up bonus for the Discover IT Chrome Card, as well as all other Discover Cards, is a full year of matched cash back. This means any cash back you earn during the year will be doubled and deposited into your Discover Cash Rewards balance. That makes the Discover IT Chrome a 4% cash back card for both gas and restaurant purchases that earns 2% on non-category purchases it's first year. So if you end up maxing each quarters spend cap of $1,500, you'll end up with at least $240 in cash back.
