USAA CashBack Rewards Plus Card
Calculate total cash back and cash value of the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Card based on monthly/yearly spend and compare the results against top cards.
The USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card offers an outstanding return on both gas and military base purchases. It also provides cash back for general supermarket purchases as well. The drawback is that all three categories have a cap with the gas and military base purchases sharing the same cap. This limits the return a little when compared to other reward cards, but the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card can hold it's own as it still has great earning potential.
The USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card features three bonus categories which are gas stations, military base purchases, and supermarkets. Gas stations and military base purchases have a combined limited of $3,000 spend per year in which it earns 1% cash back after you spend pass that limit. The supermarket category also has a $3,000 per year cap that earns 1% cash back after you pass that limit. There is no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn with the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card. The details on the bonus categories of this card are listed below.
5% Gas Station
The USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card earns 5% cash back per $1 spent when used at gas stations. These type of purchases will be good for businesses that are included in a merchant category identified as primarily selling automobile gasoline to consumers. This means gas stations such as Exxon, Speedways and BP.
Earning 5% cash back at gas stations is superb and is one of the highest earning rates in the credit card industry. Unfortunately, this card has a $3,000 spend cap that is shared with the Military Base category. Between both bonus of these categories, you can earn a max of $150 at the 5% rate. The cap only allows for $250 a month in combined spending per month which is not a lot of wiggle room. If you spend more than $333 a month then you're better off the Costco Anywhere Visa. The Sam's Club Mastercard earns 5% on the first $6,000 in purchases which greatly increases the wiggle room for anyone spending more than $250 a month. The only drawback to both the Costco and Sam's Club Card (at least for most people) is the fact that the cash back earned on both cards is given out annually in the beginning of the year. So you will not be able to use your rewards as you earn them. If this is not a problem to you, you may want to look at these two alternatives!
5% Military Base
Spending done on Military Bases with the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card will earn 5% cash back per $1 spent. This includes purchases made at businesses that are included in a merchant category identified as primarily selling goods and/or services on United States military bases (such as commissaries, exchanges and shoppettes). This is a rare category in the credit card world, so if you live on base or occasionally spend on base, this could be a very useful bonus category.
Supermarket purchases on the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card will earn 2% cash back per $1 spent. This is relatively low compared to other cards like the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred which earns 6% cash back on the first $6,000 in purchases. If you are (or were) military, AMEX waives all fees so you have a few better options to choose from when it comes to Supermarket purchases.
All other purchases on the USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. This is a terrible rate for non-category purchases when their are so many other options to choose from. If you're sticking with the USAA family of cards, the USAA Preferred Rewards Visa Signature earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases. Using this card will accumulate a lot more cash back during the year even at the slight difference of 0.5%. You can also find other reward cards to cover more categories that you spend in on a daily or monthly basis.
