The American Express Green Card was revamped in late 2019. Travel and dining categories was added to the card along with a $200 total in annual credits between CLEAR and LoungeBuddy. With the AMEX Green being the only American Express card with a travel category, the card can now be compared to other cards that feature a travel category such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Both cards earn on travel and dining while featuring different benefits as well as different annual fees. You can use the Comparison Calculator on this page to find out which card earns you the best return.

Bonus Categories

AMEX Green

The AMEX Green Card has two bonus categories which are travel and restaurant purchases. When spending in these two categories, you will earn 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent.

American Express defines travel as:

  • Airfare
  • Hotels
  • Cruises
  • Car Rentals
  • Campgrounds
  • Trains
  • Taxicabs
  • Rideshare Services
  • Tours
  • Ferries
  • Tolls
  • Parking
  • Buses
  • Subways
  • Third Party Travel Websites
  • AMEX Travel Website

Restaurant purchases for American Express is defined as your standard fast food joints, fine dining establishments, diners, and anything else that you would expect to be coded as such. Both categories on this card applies to purchases worldwide, so you'll earn at the 3x rate internationally.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card also features the travel and dining bonus categories. Spending in either category will earn you 2 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent.

Chase defines travel as:

  • Airlines
  • Hotels/Motels
  • Timeshares
  • Car Rental Agencies
  • Taxis
  • Buses
  • Trains
  • Limousines
  • Cruise Lines
  • Travel Agencies
  • Travel Sites
  • Ferries
  • Toll Bridges
  • Highways
  • Parking Lots
  • Garages
  • Anything else related to travel

As with American Express, restaurant purchases is pretty straightforward. You'll earn points on your standard fast food, diners, fine dining, and anything else you would expect to be coded as a dining/restaurant purchase.

You'll be able to easily earn more Membership Rewards Points on travel and restaurant/dining purchases than you will Ultimate Rewards Points, but there are several other factors as well such as how you plan on redeeming your points, how much spend you'll run through these categories per year, and whether or not you can make use of the card perks.

If you're transferring points to partners, AMEX and Chase share six partners. Looking at points only, the AMEX Green will be the better choice with all shared transfer partners except for JetBlue Airways (AMEX doesn't transfer to JetBlue at a 1:1 ratio).

If you're leaning towards redeeming points for travel, Membership Rewards Points has a value of 1 cent per point when used for airfare purchased through the American Express Travel Portal and a value of 0.7 cents for all other forms of travel through their portal. Chase Sapphire Preferred Cardholders can redeem Ultimate Rewards Points for 1.25 cents each for all travel made through their Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal. So if you're using points strictly for airfare, the AMEX Green generally offers the better return. Non-airfare redemptions will be better suited for those earning Ultimate Rewards Points. Of course, this still depends on many other factors like yearly spend and the annual fee for instance.

Card Benefits

AMEX Green Card

The AMEX Green Cardholders will receive an annual $100 credit for a CLEAR membership and an annual $100 credit towards LoungeBuddy. CLEAR membership gives you the ability to cut to the front of the TSA security line while LoungeBuddy allows you to purchase one-time lounge passes, on-demand, when you need them. The cash value of either benefit solely depends on whether you use these programs. LoungeBuddy could be unimportant to someone who may already have Priority Pass and CLEAR may not be useful if you don't frequently visit airports (or stadiums) that use it. If you do use one or both of these programs, the Green Card could be worth considering.

The AMEX Green Card is a charge card meaning it has no preset spending limit (NPSL). Charges made to the card will be due in full the following month once the statement ends. Purchasing power on the charge card will adjusts with the use of the card, the payment history, credit record and financial resources known to AMEX along with other factors.

LoungeBuddy Perks
Purchase airport lounge access worldwide starting at $25 with LoungeBuddy.

The AMEX Green also comes with your standard American Express benefits. This includes baggage insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance, AMEX Offers, ShopRunner membership, AMEX Presale Tickets access, and more.

You can possibly get a higher value transferring points to AMEX's partners. Other redemptions with AMEX will range between of value of 0.5 to 1 cents per point.

Credit Card Fees

AMEX Green

The annual fee for the AMEX Green Card is $150 annually. If you're able use the $200 in credits between LoungeBuddy and CLEAR then this fee is easily taken care of. If you can't make use of either credit, you'll have to run $5,000 per year ($417 per month) on the card between both travel and restaurant to break even with the fee if you value Membership Rewards Points at 1 cent each.

The AMEX Green Card does not have an authorized user fee. This means you can add friends and family as additional users to help build your Membership Rewards Points faster. I recommend adding additional users if possible due to the great earning rate the card provides.

The AMEX Green Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee which makes it a superb choice for those looking to make international travel and dining purchases on the card.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred has an annual fee of $0 the first year, then $95 annually. With no annual fee to worry about the first year, you'll come out ahead without even trying. Once the second year kicks in through, you'll have to crunch some numbers to make sure it's worth keeping. If you value Ultimate Rewards Points at 1.25 cents each, you'll have to run $3,800 in spend through the card to break even with $95 annual fee.

There is no authorized user fee to worry about with the Chase Sapphire Preferred. If you have friends and family that spend in the travel and dining categories, I recommend adding them to help build your balance of Ultimate Rewards Points faster.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred has a 0% foreign transaction fee. That makes the card a solid option for those who wish to earn Ultimate Rewards Points on international spending/travel.
