The American Express Gold and American Express Green cards have both undergone some changes within the past year. The AMEX Gold, previously know as the Premier Rewards Gold, received a boost in earnings across both the supermarket and restaurant categories as well as a $100 dining credit. The AMEX Green Card, which previously featured no bonus categories, was revamped entirely adding travel and dining as 3x categories. Both the AMEX Gold and AMEX Green Cards are solid choices for anyone looking to earn Membership Rewards Points.

Bonus Categories

AMEX Green

The AMEX Green Card features the travel and restaurant bonus categories in which it earns 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. American Express defines travel as:

  • Airfare
  • Hotels
  • Cruises
  • Car Rentals
  • Campgrounds
  • Trains
  • Taxicabs
  • Rideshare Services
  • Tours
  • Ferries
  • Tolls
  • Parking
  • Buses
  • Subways
  • Third Party Travel Websites
  • AMEX Travel Website

AMEX defines their restaurant category as your typical fast food, fine dining, and sit-down restaurant purchases. This category is worldwide so you can earn 3 points per $1 on international restaurant/dining purchases as well.

The AMEX Gold Card features three bonus categories. It earns 4 Membership Rewards Points on both U.S. supermarket and restaurant (worldwide) purchases as well as 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 on airfare purchases made either directly with the airline or through the American Express Travel website. The supermarket bonus category is capped out at a total of $25,000 per year (think gift cards) which is around $2,083 per month. Once you pass that threshold, you will only earn 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent for the remainder of the calendar year. There is no cap on the airfare or restaurant category.

You will also want to note that the 4x on supermarket purchases only applies to grocery stores in the United States. You will not earn the bonus on supermarket purchases made outside of the United States. Supermarket purchases made internationally will earn at the non-category rate of 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent.

My AMEX Gold Card earns me 4x points per $1 spent on gas at Get Go.

Another thing to note about the supermarket category is that sometimes you will get lucky and earn 4x points on gas for the supermarkets feature gas stations. For example, I tend to earn 4x points on gas purchases made at Giant Eagle Get Go gas stations.

Card Benefits

AMEX Green

The AMEX Green Card comes with two annual benefits that you will receive once per calendar year. As a cardholders you will receive an annual $100 credit towards a CLEAR membership which helps you cut to the front of the security line in the United States (either front of precheck or non-precheck line). You will also receive a $100 credit towards LoungeBuddy which allows you to purchase one-time lounge passes, on-demand, when you need them. The value of these benefits will depend on whether you use either of these services. If you don't use CLEAR and/or you don't use LoungeBuddy (maybe due to having Priority Pass), you will not get much value out of these. If you normally pay for either of these services (especially CLEAR), the AMEX Green Card could easily be worth picking up.

The AMEX Green Card is a charge card that has no preset spending limit (NPSL). This means that charges made to the card will be due in full every month. Purchasing power adjusts with the use of the AMEX Green Card, the payment history, credit record and financial resources known to AMEX along with other factors.

The AMEX Gold Card also comes with a few annual benefits which will be available once per calendar year. You will receive $120 total in dining credits which split up into $10 per month. Those dining credits are good at the following restaurants:

  • Grubhub
  • Seamless
  • The Cheesecake Factory
  • Ruth's Chris Steak House
  • Shake Shack
  • Boxed

When you use your card for any of the restaurants/establishments above, the fee will automatically trigger. If you don't have enough credit to cover the full cost, the remainder will be charged to the card.

AMEX Gold Dining
You'll receive $10 in credits per month with select restaurants/services.

The AMEX Gold also comes with a $100 incidental airline credit. Upon receiving the card and every January after that, you will be given the chance to choose the airline you want this credit to apply to. There are nine airlines you can choose from:

Any incidental purchases made with your selected airline will automatically trigger the credit. This includes airline lounge access, checked bag fees, food/beverage purchases, and in-flight purchases. If you have airline status or you have a credit card that waives baggage fees and/or allow lounge access, this credit will be hard to use. Do note that you can sometimes trigger this credit by purchasing seat upgrades after you've already purchased the airline ticket.

AMEX Gold Cardholders will also have access to book hotels through The Hotel Collection with American Express Travel. Those who book two consecutive nights through the portal will receive:

  • $100 Hotel Credit
  • Room Upgrade Upon Arrival

The Hotel Collection is only available to those who have a consumer or business version of the Platinum, Gold, or Centurion card.

As with the AMEX Green, the AMEX Gold Card is also a charge card that has no preset spending limit (NPSL). All charges made to the card will be due in full when the statement cuts every month. The purchasing power of the AMEX Gold Card will adjust with the use of the card, the payment history, credit record and financial resources known to AMEX along with other factors.

Sign Up Bonus

AMEX Green

The standard AMEX Green Card sign up bonus is 30,000 Membership Rewards Points after you spend $2,000 on the card within the first 3 months of card membership. 30,000 Membership Rewards Points are worth an easy $300 when redeemed with AMEX for airfare through the American Express Travel Portal. Other redemptions such as Pay with Points, gift cards, and other forms of redemptions directly through AMEX will give you a value of $150 to $240. You can also transfer your Membership Rewards Points to airline and hotel partners at a 1:1 ratio. This gives you an easy 30,000 airline miles or hotel points which has the chance of being worth more than $300 in value.

As part of a promotion for the new benefits of the revamped AMEX Green, new cardholders will also receive $100 in statement credits towards purchases made directly with Away (luggage) when using the card within the first 3 months of card membership. This statement credit is in addition to the 30,000-point bonus. This promotional sign up bonus is available to those who sign up before January 15th, 2020. Apply Now.

The standard AMEX Gold sign up bonus is 40,000 Membership Rewards Points after you use the card to make $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of card membership. 40,000 Membership Rewards Points can be redeemed for $400 towards airfare booked through the American Express Travel Portal. You can also get a value of between $200 to $320 when used for gift cards, other forms of travel, or to cover card charges. These points can also be transferred to airline miles and hotel points at a 1:1 ratio. So if you're looking for 40,000 airline miles or hotel points with AMEX's transfer partners, this is a good bonus to go for.

You can sometimes get a 50,000-point sign up bonus.

You can sometimes use a incognito/private browser session to get a higher sign up bonus of 50,000 Membership Rewards Points as a welcome offer.

Credit Card Fees

AMEX Green

The annual fee for the AMEX Green Card is $150 annually. This fee is not waived the first year and will be included on the first statement. If you're able to make use of the $200 in annual credits this card receives, this card will easily be worth the fee.

The AMEX Green Card does not have an authorized user fee, so I highly recommend that you add friends and family as additional users if they spend across the travel and restaurant categories.

The foreign transaction fee on the AMEX Green Card is 0%. This means you will be able to make international purchases on the card without incurring a fee per $1 spent. That makes the AMEX Green Card a great choice for international travel and dining.

The annual fee for the AMEX Gold Card is $250 annually. This fee is not waived the first year and will hit your account on the first statement. The AMEX Gold comes with $200 in annual credits which can easily offset the majority of the fee if you use them. If you find it hard to use the $100 airline credit and/or the dining credit, the fee can be a little harder to justify. If that's the case, you may want to pair the AMEX Green with the AMEX Everyday Preferred to get a solid earning across restaurant, grocery, and travel purchases.

The AMEX Gold Card does not have an authorized user fee. If you have friends and family that spend in the three bonus categories featured on the card, I recommend you add them to earn Membership Rewards Points faster.

The AMEX Gold Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee. That makes this card superb for earning Membership Rewards Points on restaurant purchases. As for the supermarket category, it's unfortunately tied to U.S. purchases only.
