The Chase Ink Preferred is a very powerful business card that earns a high return across travel and several top business categories while the Chase Ink Unlimited is a flat rate 1.5% cash back card. This page breaks down the benefits of both cards side by side and provides a calculator that will help you calculate the cash value both cards based on your spend.

Bonus Categories

Ink Preferred

The Chase Ink Preferred Card earns 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on travel, shipping, internet, cable, phone, and advertising on the first $150,000 in combined purchases for the year. After you surpass $150,000 in purchases across these categories, you'll earn 1x Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent for the remainder of the year. The Ink Preferred also earn 5 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 when using the card on rides with Lyft which has no yearly cap. Whether this is a great return or not will depend on how you plan on redeeming your Ultimate Rewards Points.

Lyft Pink Logo
You can earn a 50% boost to your points and complimentary Lyft Pink with the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card.

Redeeming your Ultimate Rewards directly with Chase will results in a point value of 0.8 to 1.25 cents each. You'll get the best return of 1.25 cents per point with Chase when you use your points on the Chase Travel Portal since you'll receive a 25% boost to value and if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve tied to your account, you'll earn a 50% boost making your points worth 1.5 cents each. This means spending in the 3x categories will give you a return of 3.75% to 4.5% when using your points for travel through the Chase Travel Portal.

Most other redemptions outside of transferring your points to Chase's partners will give you 0.8 cents to 1 cent per point. Redeeming your points for 1 cent is a solid option since this means you'll basically be earning a 3% return on all of the 3x categories offered on the card. Since the card has an annual fee, you'll want to typically aim for higher than a 1 cent redemption.

Ink Unlimited

The Chase Ink Cash Unlimited Card earns an unlimited 1.5% cash back per $1 spent on all purchases. If you use this as a cash back card, it's pretty straightforward and simple. This card also earns 5% cash back when used on rides with Lyft.

The Ink Unlimited card becomes very powerful when combined with an Ultimate Rewards Points earning credit card since you'll be able to convert Chase cash back into Ultimate Rewards Points at a 1 cent to 1 point ratio. This means you can earn 1.5x Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on this card which can give you a higher return when combined with the 25% or 50% point boosts offered on Chase's Ultimate Rewards credit cards.

Chase Points Transfer

A big plus to the Ultimate Rewards Points is that they can be transferred to Chase's airline and hotel partners. This basically means you can convert your points to airline miles and hotel points that you can use for free flights and free hotel stays. Chase Points transfers at a 1:1 ratio meaning 1 Ultimate Rewards Point will equal 1 airline mile or hotel point in the partner program.

The Chase Ultimate Rewards Point Transfer Calculator below will calculate the conversion of points into airline miles and hotel points with Chase's partners.

Transferring your Ultimate Rewards Points to airline miles and hotel points will generally give the chance to get the best value out of your points. Airline miles and hotel points can be worth as much as 2 cent or more each if used properly.

Card Benefits

Ink Preferred

The primary benefit of the Chase Ink Preferred is that it offers a 25% boost to point value when used on the Chase Travel Portal. This means you'll be able to easily redeem your Ultimate Rewards Points for 1.25 cents each. If you plan on redeeming your points for non-travel purchases or you plan on transferring your Ultimate Rewards Points to Chase's partners, this will not be a perk that benefits you.

Outside of the point boost, this card comes with the standard travel and purchase protection/insurance benefits that you will find on most Chase credit cards. This includes:

  • Trip Cancellation Insurance
  • Trip Interruption Insurance
  • Travel & Emergency Assistance Services
  • Roadside Dispatch
  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
  • Cell Phone Protection
  • Extended Warranty
  • Purchase Protection

Ink Unlimited

The Ink Unlimited doesn't offer any benefits that are specific to the card itself. You could call the ability to convert cash back into Ultimate Rewards Points a benefit if you have an Ultimate Rewards credit card. The ability to do that does boost the value of the card quite significantly if used for miscellaneous purchases that your other credit cards would normally earn 1x/1% rewards on.

The Ink Unlimited comes with a handful of great travel and purchase protection/insurance benefits you'll find on Chase credit cards. This includes:

Ink Preferred Benefits
25% Point Boost
Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance
Travel & Emergency Assistance Services
Roadside Dispatch
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
Cell Phone Protection
Extended Warranty
Purchase Protection

Sign Up Bonus

Ink Preferred

The Ink Preferred Card comes with a standard signup bonus of 80,000 Ultimate Rewards Points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening. This is the highest standard bonus offered on any Chase credit card. In terms of spend, you'll be earning an additional 16 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on top of the category multipliers on the first $5,000 in spend if you factor in the sign up bonus.

When redeemed directly with Chase, 80,000 points will be worth $1,000 when redeemed on the Chase Travel Portal ($1,200 if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve). Other non-travel redemptions will give you a value of $800 or lower.

Transferring your points to Chase's airline and hotel partners will give you 80,000 airline miles or 80,000 hotel points. The cash value you get out of this will depend on how you redeem them once you transfer them to a partner. This can give you value as high as $1,600 or more for some redemptions.

ink business unlimited

Ink Unlimited

The Ink Unlimited Card comes with a standard sign up bonus of $500 after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening. This is a significantly higher sign up bonus than the $150-$200 offered on the Chase Freedom Unlimited which the personal/consumer version of the Ink Unlimited. In terms of spend, you'll be earning around 18.16% total cash back per $1 spent on the first $3,000 in purchases if you factor in the sign up bonus.

If you have an Ultimate Rewards credit card, the Ink Unlimited's $500 bonus will be equal to 50,000 Ultimate Rewards Points. If redeemed directly with Chase, you're looking at $625-$750 when used on the Chase Travel Portal depending on which card you have (25% boost vs 50% boost). This can also be transferred to Chase's partners to equal 50,000 airline miles or hotel points.

Credit Card Fees

Ink Preferred

The Ink Preferred Card has an annual fee of $95 per year. For the return this card is capable of, this is a pretty withstand-able fee. Depending on how much you value Ultimate Rewards Points, you can break even with the following spend on the 3x categories:

  • 1 Cent - $3,167 Per Year / $264 Per Month
  • 1.25 Cents - $2,533 Per Year / $212 Per Month
  • 1.5 Cents - $2,112 Per Year / $176 Per Month
  • 2 Cents - $1,583 Per Year / $132 Per Month

The Ink Preferred does not charge a fee to add employee cards. I would highly recommend adding additional cardholders to help close the gap on the $150,000 spend limit of the 3x categories.

The Ink Preferred has a 0% foreign transaction fee meaning this card is a solid option for those looking for a solid return on international spend and travel.

Ink Unlimited

The Ink Unlimited does not have an annual fee which means you will always be earning at least a 1.5% return on your spend. Combining this card with an Ultimate Rewards Card will give you even more value which I highly recommend if you plan on earning rewards with Chase and plan on using them for travel.

The Ink Unlimited charges a whopping $0 per employee card so you can add as many employees (or friends/family) that you want in order to earn cash back (or points) even faster.

Unfortunately, the Ink Unlimited has a 3% foreign transaction fee. This means you'll be charged 3% for every $1 of international spend you run on the card. Since the card only earns 1.5 cash back, you'll be eating away at your rewards in double time. I do not recommend using this card outside of the United States.
