Barclays Carnival Mastercard
The Carnival Mastercard is a good choice for anyone that wants to earn a solid return spending directly with Carnival. The card also offers a refund on Carnival shore excursions which could be a big benefit of holding onto the card since it has no annual fee. As far as any other spending though, it comes up short since it only offers up to a 1.4% return on non-Carnival purchases.
Carnival FunPoints Value
Carnival FunPoints are worth 1 cent each on average but can range from 0.75 cents to 1.5 cents each based on the how you go about redeeming them. FunPoints can be used for statement credits, gift cards, onboard amenities, merchandise, and travel. The best value of 1.5 cents comes from redeeming them for Carnival Cruises that cost $1,500 or more and the worst value of 0.75 cents each comes from gift card redemptions.
For the full list of Funpoint redemption options and to calculate the cash value of Funpoints, jump over to the Carnival FunPoints Calculator. It will list how much your FunPoints are worth for each redemption!
The Barclay Carnival World Mastercard has two bonus categories which are purchases on Carnival Cruise Lines and purchases made with any cruise lines that are part of World's Leading Cruise Lines brand.
2x Carnival Cruise Line
The Barclay Carnival World Mastercard earns 2 FunPoints per $1 spent on all Carnival Cruise Line purchases. This includes cruise tickets purchased directly with Carnival, Carnival Cruise vacation and Carnival Vacation Club purchases, and any purchases charged to the Sail and Sign® account onboard any Carnival cruise ship. At the base value of 1 cent per FunPoint, this is a return of 2% which is not too bad for Carnival Purchases, but there are reward cards that offer a better return on travel such as the Chase Ink Business Preferred (3x on Travel), Citi ThankYou Premier (3x on Travel), and PenFed Pathfinder Rewards Card (3x on Travel). It's worth noting that all three of these cards have an annual fee whereas the Carnival Mastercard does not.
2x World's Leading Cruise Lines
Any cruise line purchases on the Barclay Carnival World Mastercard that fall under the World's Leading Cruise Lines umbrella will earn 2x FunPoints per $1 spent. World's Leading Cruise Lines are considered to be:
- P&O Australia
- P&O Cruises
- Princess Cruises
- Holland America Line
Being able to earn double FunPoints on 10 different cruise lines is a pretty great benefit of the Carnival Mastercard. That extra wiggle room lets you explore different cruise lines and choose your favorite while still earning the same rewards.
All purchases outside of the cruise lines listed above will earn 1 FunPoints per $1 spent which is only a 1% return for normal redemptions. I would recommend not putting non-category spend on this card. It can be places on better cards that earn a higher return (such as the Citi Double Cash (2% cash back) or a card earns transferable reward points such as the Blue Business Plus Card (2x Membership Reward Points).
Perks and Benefits
10% FunPoint Refund
The Carnival Mastercard offers a 10% 'reFUNd' when you book a Carnival shore excursion on carnival.com prior to your cruise (taxes and fees not included). This discount will appear on the same billing statement as the shore excursion package purchase. Shore excursions may be booked online prior to sailing up until the Pre-Sail cut-off time of 11:30 pm ET, the evening prior to the cruise departure.
FunPoints For Balance Transfers
New Carnival Mastercard holders can also earn 1 FunPoint per $1 in balances transferred to the Mastercard after the account is opened in the first 30 days (max of 5,000 FunPoints). So if you have a balance to transfer, you can get at most $50 from this perk.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard Carnival Mastercard sign up bonus is 10,000 bonus FunPoints after you use your card for the first time. At rate of 1 cent each, 10,000 Funpoints are worth $100. This is an okay sign up bonus, but other sign up bonuses such as the 50,000 Point Sign Up Bonus for the Capital One Venture Card Worth $500 and the 20,000 Point Sign Up Bonus for the Bank of America Travel Rewards Card Worth $200 can earn you more towards funding your next cruise.
