From the outside, earning double points with any reward program seems like a great deal. But what it really comes down to is how valuable those points are and in the case of the Barclays Princess Credit Card, these points aren't really valuable unless you're using them for redemptions that cost $2,000 or more. On top of that, the Princess Card does not offer any type of benefits for the cruise line itself. No status, no chance to earn bonus points... not even priority boarding. If you're looking for a rewards card to help you earn points for cheap or free cruises on the Princess Cruise Line, this is not the card.

Princess Cruises Reward Points

Reward points earned with the Barclay Princess Credit Card can be used for statement credit, on-board amenities, travel redemptions, gift cards/certificates, and merchandise. When these points are redeemed for statement credits, it must be toward eligible purchases made within the prior 180 days that has posted to the account. These purchases include Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, The Yachts of Seabourn, P&O Cruises, P&O Cruises Australia, Ibero, and Aida or an airline purchase that is equal to or greater than $50. Redemptions start at 5,000 points for a $50 statement credit. When these points are used for Holland America Cruise statement credits, the point value changes based on the amount of the purchase.

Redemption Amount Reward Point Value
World's Leading Cruise Line Partners
Any Amount
1 cents
Princess: $50 to $499.99 1 Cent
Princess: $500 to $2,000.99 1.25 Cents
Princess: $2,100 to $4,000.99 1.5 Cents
Princess: $4,001+ 2 Cents

The Barclay Princess Credit Card only excels when you're earning points at the 2x rate by using the card for Princess Cruise Line purchases and you're redeeming a cruise that costs more than $4,001. Jumping through those hoops will give your spend a return of 4% per $1 spent, but unless you're buying multiple expensive rooms, this will not be a common redemption for most people. Standard cruises hover between the $500 to $2,001 mark so on average the highest return will be around 3% which can be matched by plenty of reward cards.

Bonus Categories

The Barclay Princess Credit Card features one bonus category which is for Princess Cruise Line purchases. There is no limit to the amount of bonus points you can earn spending in this category and there is no limit to the amount of points you can earn on the card itself. Below are the details of the Princess Credit Card earning structure.

2x Princess Cruse Line

Using the Barclay Princess Credit Card to make purchases with Princess Cruise Line will earn 2 points per $1 spent. These include purchases made on-board Princess Cruise line. Depending on the cost of what you're applying the points to, this can be anywhere from a 2% to a 4% return per $1 spent. Cruise line tickets fall between the $500 to $2,001 pricing point on average so this would return a 2.5% return which is nothing to click your heels over. A better return can be picked up with the luxury Chase Sapphire Reserve Card and several non-premium credit cards such as the Sam's Club Mastercard and Citi ThankYou Premier Card. The aforementioned cards all earn rewards on general travel purchases so you'll earn at least 3% back on cruise lines, airfare, hotels, rental cars, and anything else labeled as travel. All three cards also feature bonus points on restaurants as well. Since the Princess Barclay Credit Card does not have any real perks for sailing with Princess, you're better off picking up these reward cards so that you can earn award travel on Princess Cruises faster without jumping through any extra 'redemption' hoops.

1x Non-Category

Purchases outside of the Princess Cruise Line category made on the Barclay Princess Credit Card will earn 1 point per $1 spent. Depending on the redemption, this will generate a return between 1% and 2%. This can easily be beat by the Citi Double Cash Card which earns double cash back on all purchases regardless of what you're redeeming the awards for. I would not recommend putting non-category spend on this card if you're working towards earning discounted cruises with Princess. Spending $2,000 in non-category purchases on the Princess Credit Card could generate between $20 back and $40 back depending on the cost of the redemption, while the Citi Double Cash would generate a guaranteed $40 back regardless.

Sign Up Bonus

The Barclay Princess Cruise Card sign up bonus is 10,000 bonus points after you use your card for the first time. This is worth a $100 statement credit towards a cruise purchase. There are other travel cards that offer a better sign up bonus than this. The Capital One Venture Card offers a 50,000 point bonus worth $500 which could shave a good amount off your cruise price while still earning you double Venture Miles worth 1 cents each for the same 2% return the Barclay Princess Credit Card offers.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Barclay Princess Credit Card has a $0 annual fee. This means you will not have to worry about the card taking away from the value of your points. You'll always earn the maximum return when using the Princess Card.

Authorized User Fee

The Barclay Princess Credit Card does not have an authorized user fee. You can add friends and family to the card if you wish for them to assist you in earning points with the Princess Card.

Foreign Transaction Fee

There is a 0% foreign transaction fee for the Barclay Princess Credit Card. This allows you to use this card internationally without being penalized a fee. Since this card only earns 1% for non-category purchases, you will not make much using this outside of Princess Cruise Line Purchases. If you're looking for a better return for international purchases, you'll want to pick up Barclay's Uber Card which (in my opinion) is one of the best international travel cards on the market due to having no fees while still featuring 10 bonus categories such as restaurants, bars, UberEats, airfare, and more!
