Barclays Choice Privileges Card
The Barclays Choice Privileges Card is a must have for anyone that frequently stays at Choice Hotels. It earns a few additional Choice Privileges Points, provides Gold Status, and offers a chance for even more bonus points if you place some decent spend on the card. On top of that, it has no annual fee so you'll always come out in the positive when it comes to earning rewards.
Choice Privileges Points Value
Choice Privileges Points have an average value of 0.6 cents each when used for Choice hotel redemptions. These points can also be used for gift cards (0.31 cents), vacation rentals (0.4 cents), cruise certificates (0.29 - 0.31 cents), magazines, and more. You can check out our full guide on earning and redeeming Choice Points.
The Barclays Choice Privileges Credit Card features three bonus categories which consist of Choice Privileges Locations (Hotels), purchasing Choice Privilege Points, and Choice Hotels gift cards. There is no limit to the amount of Choice Points you can earn with these bonus categories.
5x Choice Privileges Locations
The Barclays Choice Privileges Credit Card earns 5 Choice Points per $1 spent at eligible Choice Privileges locations. This is considered to be any of the 11 hotel brands under the Choice umbrella. This makes for a decent return of 5% which about in-line with most hotel reward cards such as the Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards.
5x Buying Choice Privileges Points
When you buy Choice Privileges Points with the Choice Privileges Credit Card, you'll earn 5 points per $1 spent. This is in additional to the amount of Choice Points you actually purchases. So if you buy 1,000 Choice Points for $11, you'll earn a total of 1,055 since you'll earn an additional 55 for the $11 purchase. Choice occasionally offers promotions as high as 40% for buying points, so using this card in conjunction with there promotions can be very beneficial to anyone trying to earn reward nights at a better rate paying for the hotel upfront. Bonus points for buying points is not a common category in the credit card world so there is not any cards that I can compare this bonus to.
5x Choice Hotel Gift Card
While it is common to earn points using co-branded credit cards to buy their own respective gift cards, hardly any loyalty program offers it as a bonus category. Using the Choice Privileges Card for the purchase of Choice Hotel gift cards will earn you 5 Choice Points per $1 spent which is a pretty decent 5% return. That can't be beat by any other rewards card.
Any purchases on the Choice Privileges Card outside of the categories above will earn 2 Choice Points per $1 spent. This is a return of 1.2% which is not bad if you're going for Choice Points.
Perks and Benefits
Holders of the Barclays Choice Privileges Card will earn 8,000 bonus points every year $10,000 or more in purchases are made by the account anniversary date. This is worth about $48 at the rate of 0.6 cents per point.
Choice Privileges Gold Status
Barclays Choice Privileges Card owners will receive complimentary Choice Gold Status. This status is normally obtained after staying 10 nights at a Choice Hotel during the calendar year. It grants perks such as a 10% bonus on elite nights, exclusive reservations and customer service phone numbers, and an elite welcome gift or points. It is the first obtainable status in the Choice Privilege program with Choice Platinum and Choice Diamond statuses being above it.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard Choice Privileges Credit Card sign up bonus is 32,000 bonus Choice Points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. Choice hotels have a wide variety of price points, but the majority of them seem to be around 10,000 to 12,000 Choice Points. There's a great deal of Choice Hotels that also cost 8,000 points as well, so you can squeeze four free nights out of this sign up bonus depending on where you stay. You can use the our Choice Point Calculators to calculate the cash value of Choice Points and the transfer of Choice Points to airline miles and points.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Barclays Choice Privileges Card does not have an annual fee which is great consider it earns a good amount of points on Choice Hotels.
Authorized User Fee
There is no charge to add authorized users to the Barclays Choice Privileges Card. If you have any authorized users that spend with Choice Hotels, adding them as additional users could generate some extra Choice Points.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee on the Barclays Choice Privileges Card is 3%. Any out of country spending on this card will take a good chunk out of your rewards. I recommend not using this card while traveling overseas.
