AMEX Hilton Surpass Card
The Hilton Honors Surpass Card Calculator will calculate total points and the cash value based on monthly/yearly spend, card benefits, and the annual fee. Compare the results side by side againt any card based on the same (or different) spend.
The Hilton Surpass Card (previously known as the Hilton Honors Ascend Card) is the next step up from the Hilton Honors Credit Card. The Surpass Card offers higher earnings on all four categories for an annual fee. It also offers a higher status in the Hilton Honors Program, priority pass lounge visits, and the ability to spend your way to Hilton Diamond status.
The Hilton Surpass Card has four bonus categories. These categories consist of Hilton properties, restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations. Below are the details of each bonus category.
12x Hilton Properties
Using the Hilton Honor Surpass Card on Hilton Properties will earn you 12 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent. Bonus points will only be earned on purchases made directly through Hilton. Pre-paid third party bookings, vacation packages, events, and banquets will not qualify for the bonus Hilton Honors Points.
Combined with the Hilton Honors Gold Status this card offers, you will be earning a total of 30 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent for a return of 18%! The only two cards that offer the same or better earnings is the Hilton Honors Business Card which also earns 30x on Hilton Properties with Gold Status and the Hilton Aspire Card which is Hilton's luxury card that offers 34x with Hilton's highest status level of Diamond. How much you spend on Hilton and how much time you spend in Hilton Hotels should be the deciding factor on which Hilton Card you pick up.
6x U.S. Restaurant
U.S. restaurant purchases on the Honor Surpass Card with earn 6 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent. The bonus points will only apply to U.S. restaurants that are in the United States. This will not apply to restaurants outside of the United States even if they are owned by a U.S. company (such as Hard Rock Cafe Paris).
The extra Hilton Honors Point this card makes over the Hilton Honors Card will not make a big difference, but it can add up over time. As with the Hilton purchases, the Hilton Honors Business Card earns the same amount while the Hilton Aspire earns 7x on this category.
6x U.S. Supermarket/Grocery
Purchases made at U.S. supermarkets will earn 6 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent with the Hilton Honors Surpass Card. American Express defines a supermarket as a merchant that's main purpose is to see a wide variety of food and household products. This includes, but not limited to, stores such as Meijer, Giant Eagle, Vons, and Winn-Dixie. Some online supermarkets are also included such as FreshDirect. Superstores, convenience stores, and warehouse clubs such as Walmart, Sam's Club, and BJ's are not considered to be supermarkets and will not earn the 6x bonus points.
This is not a big difference over the Hilton Honors Card, but over time it will add up just like the extra point on the restaurant category. The Hilton Business Card also earns the same 6x points while the Hilton Aspire earns 7x Hilton Honors Points.
6x U.S. Gas Station
Gas station purchases on the Hilton Surpass card will earn 6 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent. American Express considers gas stations to be places that specialize in the selling of gas. So place like Exxon, Mobil, and BP will earn the 6x bonus. Places that are part of grocery stores or superstores such as GetGo and Walmart's gas stations are not eligible.
As with all the Hilton Honor Cards, the Hilton Honors Surpass Card will earn 3 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent on all purchases that fall outside of the categories listed above. If you're looking to build Hilton Honors Points, this is a solid return of about 1.8% if you value Hilton Honors Points at 0.6 cents each. While a 2% cash back card could beat this, you would have to decide if it's worth the difference of 0.2% per $1 spent.
Perks and Benefits
Hilton Honors Gold Status
Hilton Honors Surpass Card members will receive complimentary Hilton Honors Gold Status. This status will only be for the Basic Card Member (primary cardholder) and not applicable to authorized users. Canceling the card will cancel the Hilton Gold Status if it has only been obtained by holding the card. Hilton Honors Gold is usually obtained after 20 stays, 40 nights, or earning 75,000 Hilton Honor Base Points during the year. It comes with perks such as an additional 18x Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent, complimentary room upgrades, and continental breakfast.
The Hilton Honors Business Card, AMEX Platinum Card, and AMEX Business Platinum Card also grants Hilton Gold status. Authorized users of either the Platinum or Business Platinum will also be eligible for Hilton Gold Status and Marriott Gold Elite Status amongst other elite travel perks.
Spend To Hilton Diamond
Spending $40,000+ on the Hilton Honors Surpass Card during a calendar year will upgrade you to Hilton Diamond Status. This status is usually obtained after 30 stays, 60 nights, or earning 120,000 Hilton Honor Base Points during a calendar year. It comes with perks such as an additional 20x Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent, executive lounge access, 48-hour room guarantees, and all the perks of Hilton Gold on down. The Hilton Aspire Card grants complimentary Hilton Diamond status.
Complimentary Priority Pass Visits
The Hilton Honors Surpass Card offers 10 complimentary Priority Pass lounge visits per year. Once all complimentary lounge visits are used, all subsequent lounge visits during the remainder of the same calendar year are subject to a fee of U.S. $27 per person per visit, which will be automatically charged to your Card. This benefit is only for the Basic Card member. Additional Card Members are not eligible for this benefit, but the complimentary lounge visit can be used for them.
Standard AMEX Benefits
The Surpass Card features the standard American Express Credit Card perks such as, but not limited to, AMEX Offers, access to AMEX presale tickets, return protection, roadside assistance, complimentary ShopRunner membership, extended warranty, purchase protection, and travel accident insurance.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard Hilton Surpass Card sign up bonus is 100,000 Hilton Honors Points. This bonus can earn you as many as 5 free nights for rooms that are 20,000 points a night. The Surpass Card sign up bonus is roughly worth about $600 since Hilton Honors Points are easily worth about 0.6 cents each.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Hilton Honors Surpass Card annual fee is $95. This is on par with other entry hotel credit cards such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card and World of Hyatt Card. Thanks to the boost in the Hilton Honors bonus category along with Hilton Gold Status that comes with this card, it will only require spending about $550 to break even.
Authorized User Fee
The Hilton Honors Surpass Card does not have an authorized user fee. I would recommend adding additional users to help build Hilton Honors Points faster!
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Hilton Honors Surpass Card does not have a foreign transaction fee, so you can earn Hilton Honors Points spending overseas without worrying about being penalized.
