Earning IHG Elite Status can be very useful if you frequently find yourself staying at IHG Hotels. IHG Elite members will enjoy perks such as complimentary WiFi, bonus IHG Points, priority check-in, late check-out, rollover nights, and room upgrades. IHG features the standard 4-tier program which consists of member, gold, platinum, and spire. The lowest IHG Elite status of Gold required 10 nights while the highest tier of Spire Elite requires 75 nights. This page will cover the benefits and perks of each IHG Elite Status tier and lay out how to qualify for each.

How To Calculate IHG Points

IHG Elite Status is based on nights or Elite Qualifying Points earned. Nights are defined as the total number of nights you're spending at a hotel. If you check-in on Monday and check-out on Friday, you would earn 4 nights since you stayed overnight Monday, Tuesday, Wendesday, and Thursday. Elite Qualifying Points are defined as:

  • Qualifying Rates paid for hotel says
  • Spend on IHG Rewards Club credit cards
  • Spend on select partner activity
  • IHG Rewards Club Bonus Points or Miles Packages
  • Qualified Spend through IHG Business Rewards

IHG Points earned from Elite Status, IHG promotions, partner promotions, point vouchers, and buying/transferring points does not count as Elite Qualifying Points.

All IHG members will earn a base rate of 10 IHG Points per $1 spent. Earning IHG Elite Status or using IHG Credit Cards will add additional points on top of the base points you earn. For example, if you spend $100 as a IHG Member, you will earn 1,000 IHG Points ($100 x 10 Base Points Per $1). If you have IHG Elite Gold status you will earn a 10% boost so you will earn 1,100 IHG Points total due to the 1,000 Base Points and the 100 points earned from the boost. IHG Gold members using the IHG Traveler Card to pay for their IHG stay will earn an additional 500 points ($100 x 5 IHG Points Per $1) for a total of 1,600 IHG Points. As you continue to move higher in the IHG Rewards Club Program, you will continue to earn higher bonuses and accumulate points at a faster rate.

IHG Reward Club Members

When you sign up for a free IHG Rewards Club account you will gain the ability to earn and redeem IHG Points. When staying at IHG Hotels you will earn a base of 10 IHG Points per $1 except at Staybridge and Candlewood Suites in which you will earn a base of 5 IHG Points. As an IHG Member you receive the following benefits:

Member Savings

IHG Members will receive a few dollars off their room rate when compared to non-IHG members. While this is usually only a few dollars, this can add up over the course of a long stay or if you frequently find yourself at IHG hotels during the year.

Complimentary WiFi

IHG Members will receive complimentary WiFi when they book an IHG hotel direct. This is also a very nice perk as no one wants to pay for WiFi in the comfort of their own hotel room.

IHG Gold Elite

The first level in climbing the IHG ladder is Gold Elite. IHG Gold Elite can be obtained after any of the following conditions have been met during the calendar year:

  • 10 Qualifying Nights at IHG Properties
  • 10,000 Elite Qualifying Points
  • Own The IHG Traveler Card

Once you've met the requirement and have IHG Elite Gold bestowed upon you, you will receive the perks of being an IHG Member along with the additional benefits of:

10% Bonus Points

IHG Gold Elite members will receive a 10% boost to the points they earn when staying at IHG Properties. While this is a small bump up to 11 IHG Points per $1 spent, it's still an additional point which will add up over the course of the year.

Priority Check-In

IHG Gold Elite members will receive priority check-in when arriving at an IHG Property. This can be useful after a long day of travel or if you just want to get to your room for some peace of mind.

Late Checkout

IHG Gold Elite members will be able to request late checkout when checking in to the property. This is another useful perk that can be well worth it if you have a late flight or not in a rush to leave.

No Point Expiration

As long as you maintain IHG Gold Elite or higher, your IHG Points will not expire.

IHG Platinum Elite

The second level of IHG status is IHG Platinum Elite. Platinum can be obtained after any of the following conditions have been met during the calendar year:

  • 40 Qualifying Nights at IHG Properties
  • 40,000 Elite Qualifying Points
  • Own The IHG Premier Card

Once you have obtained IHG Platinum Elite status, you will have access to all the perks of IHG Gold Elite along with the following additional benefits:

50% Bonus Points

IHG Platinum Elite members will receive a huge boost of 50% bonus points to the base rate for a total of 15 IHG Points per $1 spent. At a rate of about 0.7 cents per point, you're looking at a 10.5% return per $1 spent at IHG Hotels which is a nice return!

Rollover Nights

IHG Platinum Elite members will receive the ability to rollover unused elite nights into the next year. That means if you had 50 qualifying nights during this year, you would qualify for Platinum Elite Status and the extra 10 nights would roll over into the next year. So you would start the next year with 10 elite nights and only need 30 nights to re-obtain Platinum Status. Rollover perks are really nice when it comes to elite status programs. Delta Airlines and Radisson Hotels also offer rollover perks for their programs.

Room Upgrades

IHG Platinum Elite members will receive complimentary room upgrades at the time of check-in. Knowing that you paid a base rate for a standard room and end up in a suite is one of the best perks of hotel loyalty programs.

72-Hour Room Guarantee

IHG Platinum Elite members will be eligible for the 72-Hour Room Guarantee perk. This allows you to book a room up to 72-hours in advance and rest assure that your room will be available when it's time to check-in.

IHG Spire Elite

The highest level in the IHG Club Rewards Program is IHG Spire Elite. Spire can be obtained after any of the following conditions have been met during the calendar year:

  • 75 Qualifying Nights at IHG Properties
  • 75,000 Elite Qualifying Points

Once you have been deemed worthy of IHG Spire Elite, you will enjoy the benefits of IHG Platinum Elite along with the additional benefits of:

100% Bonus Points

IHG Spire Elite members will receive a 100% bonus to their base points for a total of 20 IHG Points per $1 spent. Combine IHG Spire Elite status with the IHG Premier Card and you're looking at 30 IHG Points per $1 spent which is a 21% return per $1 spent! Earning 30 points per $1 is equal to earning 6 miles per $1 when transfered to 30+ airline partners!

Spire Elite Gift

IHG Spire Elite members will have the choice of receiving 25,000 bonus points (~$175 value) or gifting Platinum Elite to a family member or friend. If you have a friend that stays at IHG hotels frequently, they would probably get more than a $175 value out of Platinum Elite status since it offers a 50% point bonus and room upgrades on top of several other perks. If you don't have anyone that you feel is worth of Platinum Elite status, earning 25,000 bonus points isn't bad either. That's enough for 1-2 free nights as select IHG Properties.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star

IHG Spire Elite members will receive exclusive Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star status. This Hertz status includes one-car-class upgrades, a 10% bonus on Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Points, a bonus of 675 Rewards Points after 15 qualifying rentals as well the perks of lower statuses.
