The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card is a great choice for anyone looking to earn a great deal of additional IHG Points when staying at IHG hotels. On top of that, the card also offers a slew of benefits when staying at IHG hotels thanks to the IHG Platinum Elite status it provides giving you a 50% point bonus, elite rollover nights, complimentary room upgrades, and more. Add to the fact that it gives you an annual free night and you've got yourself the best card for IHG.

Bonus Categories

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card features 4 bonus categories. These categories are for spending in the categories of grocery, gas station, restaurant, and IHG Properties. There is no limit to the amount of IHG Points you can earn spending in these categories. Below are the details of each IHG Premier Card bonus category.

10x IHG Properties

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card earns 10 IHG Points per $1 spent on IHG properties. Since IHG Points are worth 0.7 cents each, this is a return of 7% which is a great return for anyone that frequently stays at IHG properties. This is about the best you can get in terms of earning IHG Points and in terms of the return as well.

2x Grocery

Card spending on groceries with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card will earn 2 IHG Points per $1 spent. Chase considers grocery to be grocery stores and supermarkets that offer a full service grocery line of merchandise including a deli and bakery as well as smaller grocery stores. This includes places such as Winn Dixie, Vons, Meijer, and Publix.

Spending in this category only generates a return of 1.4% which can be easily beat on several reward cards. Unless you're really in need for IHG Points or that's your primary focus when it comes to rewards, I would avoid using this card for grocery purchases. The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday earns 3% cash back and the AMEX Everyday Card earns up to 2.2 Membership Reward Points (easily worth 1 cent each) which is a 2.2% return on grocery.

2x Gas Station

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card earns 2 IHG Points per $1 spent when used at gas stations. Chase defines gas stations as merchants that primary deal in the selling of gas. This will be places such as Exxon, Hess, BP, and Speedway. Again, a better return can be earned on a multitude of credit cards. Examples are the Bank of America Cash Rewards Card which earns 3% cash back and the PNC Cash Rewards Card which earns 4% cash back.

If you're looking for hotel cards, Hilton's Hilton Honors Card (3% return) and Hilton Surpass Card (3.6% return) both earn a higher return as well as the Marriott Point earning Marriott Bonvoy Premier Business Plus and Marriott Bonvoy Business Card cards with a 2.8% return.

2x Restaurant

Using the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card to dine out at restaurants will earn you 2 IHG Points per $1 spent. Chase defines restaurants as merchants whose primary business is sit-down or eat-in dining, including fast food restaurants as well as fine dining establishments. Spending on the IHG Premier Card will still earn the same 1.4% return as the two categories above. This type of spend is best placed on a card such as the Barclay Uber Card (4% cash back).

If you're looking for hotel cards, all four Hilton Honor Credit Cards (3% to 4.2% return) and both Marriott Business Cards also earn a return of 2.8%.

1x Non-Category

Purchases on the IHG Rewards Club Premier outside of the categories listed above will earn 1 IHG Point per $1 spent. Just about any card on the market could generate a better return. Unless your primary focus is IHG points, I would not put non-category spend on this card.

Perks and Benefits

Annual Free Night

The IHG Premier Credit Card offers an anniversary free night on "eligible" hotels worldwide every year. Eligible hotels are considered to be IHG brand hotels with a redemption value up to and including 40,000 points. IHG doesn't have a reward table, but a hefty chunk of IHG hotels are less than 40,000 IHG points so you will not have a hard time putting this award night to use.

Offering a free night is standard with a great deal of hotel loyalty programs. Marriott offers an annual free night on all 7 of their credit cards. The old Marriott card offers an annual night on up to 25,000 points while the mid-tier and business cards offer a night on up to 35,000, and lastly the two luxury cards offer an annual night worth up to 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points. The World of Hyatt Rewards Card also gains an annual free night at a category 1 to 4 hotel.

$100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Fee

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card comes with up to a $100 statement credit towards a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. Both of these perks help accelerate and speed up your interaction with security both within the states (TSA PreCheck) and when re-entering the United States internationally (Global Entry). The IHG Premier Card has to be used to pay for the fee. The applicant does not have to be the cardholder and the credit will still be offered even if the applicant does not get accepted into either program.

This is a common perk on travel cards these days. While it's mostly seen on luxury cards such as the AMEX Platinum Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, it is available on standard travel cards such as the Capital One Venture Card and the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card.

10,000 Bonus Points

Spending $20,000 on the IHG Premier Card each year before the account anniversary will earn 10,000 bonus points. 10,000 IHG Points is worth about $60 which is not a lot compared to the amount of spend required. If it happens naturally it's a nice extra benefit to receive, but personally I wouldn't recommend striving to hit that goal. Depending on how much of that spend is for IHG, it could be placed on better credit cards for better rewards.

Platinum Elite Status

Complimentary Platinum Elite Status is offered to IHG Rewards Club Premier cardholders. IHG Platinum Elite status offers a 50% point bonus, elite rollover nights, complimentary room upgrades, and more. Calculate how many IHG Points you can earn based on your spend with Platinum Elite status versus IHG Spire Elite using the IHG Point Earning Calculator.

Most co-branded hotel cards offer some type of complimentary status. All of the basic Marriott/SPG personal and business cards offer Marriott Elite Silver Status, the World of Hyatt Card offers Hyatt Discoverist Status, and the Choice Privileges Card offers Choice Gold Status. All of these status come with distinctive perks such as complimentary room upgrades and/or bonus points.

20% IHG Points Discount

Purchasing IHG Points with the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card will earn you a 20% discount. While buying points is usually not worth it without a promo, earning 20% off could be useful if you need to top off your points. Just make sure they're worth buying. A discount on points is not common on most reward cards, but the Barclays Choice Privileges Card offers bonus Choice Points on both Choice Gift Cards and the purchase of Choice Points which are worth about 1 cent each.

4th Night Free

IHG Rewards Club Premier Card holders will be able to receive a complimentary 4th night free when they use their IHG Points to redeem three consecutive nights. This is a benefit of both the IHG Premier Card and IHG Traveler Card. Most hotel programs allow you to obtain a complimentary fifth night when using award nights. Marriott/SPG grants the fifth night free when you stay four consecutive nights and Hilton credit card holders have access to their 5th Night Free Perk as well. Holders of the Citi Prestige Card earn a complimentary 4th night at almost any hotel when they book through Citi.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard IHG Premier Credit Card sign up bonus is 80,000 IHG Points. This is roughly worth about $470. IHG's standard lowest properties hover around 10,000 points, so you can get a max of about 8 nights out of this bonus and even more if you use the 4th award night free perk. You can also transfer 80,000 IHG Points to 40 different airlines to get you in the air faster!

Authorized User Bonus

Adding an authorized user to the IHG Premier Card will earn 5,000 bonus points once they use the card to make a purchase within the first three months of account opening. While 5,000 points is not a lot when it comes to IHG Points, it's a nice added bonus if you're trying to reach an award night redemption.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the IHG Rewards Club Premier Card is $89. This is around the standard pricing point for most co-branded hotel cards such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card and the Hilton Honors Surpass Card.

Authorized User Fee

The IHG Rewards Club Premier Card does not have an authorized user fee. If you have friends or family that staff at IHG hotels or that occasionally shop in the 2x bonus categories (if you're going for IHG points), I recommend adding them as authorized users.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The foreign transaction fee for the IHG Rewards Club Premier Club Card is 0% meaning you can use this card overseas without worry about being penalized.
