The Chase Bank IHG Rewards Club Traveler Card is the entry credit card for earning IHG Points. It features the same bonus categories as the IHG Premier Card, but earns less points on IHG Properties and lacks a few extra benefits. It could be a good card for anyone that stays at IHG Properties one to three times a year, but frequent IHG members will want the Premier Card if they're looking for best return and better benefits.

Bonus Categories

IHG Properties, grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants are the four bonus categories featured on the IHG Rewards Club Traveler Card and there is no limit to the amount of IHG Points you can earn spending in those categories. When it comes to running spend through this card, the primary bonus category of IHG Properties provide an decent return, but the remaining three categories provide a small return of 1.4% if you value IHG Points at 0.7 cents. Below are the details of each category.

5x IHG Properties

The IHG Rewards Club Traveler Credit Card earns 5 IHG Points per $1 spent on purchases made at IHG Properties. This is one of the big differences between this card and the IHG Club Premier Card which earns 10x on IHG Properties.

When it comes to return on hotel spending, most co-branded credit cards offer a are more generous when it comes to spending with their respective brand. All of the updated Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards earn a 4.2% return on Marriott Spend, Hilton Honors Credit Cards earn between a 4.2% and 8.4% return, and the World of Hyatt credit card earns a 7.2% return. The IHG Premier is on par with basic earnings offering a return of 7% on IHG Properties. If you're going with an IHG credit card, I recommend picking up the IHG Premier card just because it has the annual free night which takes care of the annual fee.

2x Gas Stations

Spending at gas stations on the IHG Rewards Club Traveler Card will earn 2 IHG Points per $1 spent. Chase defines gas stations as merchants that primary deal in the selling of gas. This will be places such as Exxon, Hess, BP, and Speedway.

This category, along with the remainder of bonus categories, only earn a 1.4% return on spend. If you're in desperate need of IHG Points or this is your main card, then spending in this category is okay, but any 1.5% cash back card can do better. Some good choices are the PNC Cash Rewards Card which earns 4% cash back and the Hilton Surpass Card offers a 3.6% return.

2x Grocery

The IHG Rewards Club Traveler Card earns 2 IHG Points per $1 spent at grocery stores. Chase considers grocery to be grocery stores and supermarkets that offer a full service grocery line of merchandise including a deli and bakery as well as smaller grocery stores. This includes places such as Winn Dixie, Vons, Meijer, and Publix.

Grocery spend could be placed on better cards that would earn you a higher return. Some of the best cards in terms of return on grocery would be the Everyday Preferred Card which earns up to 4.5x Membership Reward Points (easily worth 1 cent each, but can be worth more) and the Blue Cash Preferred which earns 6% cash back on grocery. Both cards also have non-annual fee versions which still earn a 3% and 2.2% return respectively.

2x Restaurant

Dining at restaurants will earn you 2 IHG Points per $1 spent when using the IHG Rewards Club Traveler Card. Chase defines restaurants as merchants whose primary business is sit-down or eat-in dining, including fast food restaurants as well as fine dining establishments. If you're looking for a better return, I recommend looking at the Barclay Uber Card which earns 4% cash back. In the hotel category, both Marriott Business Cards and all four Hilton Honor Credit Cards provide better returns on restaurant spend.

1x Non Category

Spending on the IHG Traveler Card outside of the categories list above will earn 1 IHG Point per $1 spent which is a 0.7% return. Even a 1% cash back card can provide better results than this. I would not recommend putting non-category spend on this card. Pick up a 1.5% cash back card such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited or the Citi Double Cash Card to earn 2% cash back. Both cards have no annual fee and provide a significantly better return.
