Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AMEX Card
Review the elite benefits of the Marriott Brilliant Card, calculate how many points you can earn based on your spend, and compare results against top cards.
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card is Marriott's premium credit card. The Brilliant Card was originally introduced in August 2018 as the SPG Luxury Card before the program fully switched from Marriott Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy February 2019. The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card offers several travel benefits along with perks for those who often stay at Marriott brand hotels. It's a great match for anyone devoted to the Bonvoy program.
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card features three bonus categories that earn additional Marriott Bonvoy Points. Those bonus categories are Marriott Properties, restaurants, and airfare booked directly with the airline. There is no limit to the amount of bonus points you can earn spending in these categories and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with the card. Below are the details of the bonus categories on the Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card.
6x Marriott Properties
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card will earn you 6 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent on all participating Marriott hotels. This category can be for hotel stays or purchases made at on-site properties that are owned by Marriott or ring up as a hotel charge related to Marriott.
Most of Marriott's available credit cards earn at the 6x rate. This is the most Bonvoy Points you can earn per $1 spent between Marriott and transfer partner credit cards.
3x U.S. Restaurants
Using the Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card for restaurants in the U.S. will earn you 3 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent. This will apply to fast food, fine dining establishments, and some food delivery services if they happen to code as restaurant.
Marriott's business credit cards earn a higher return of 4x on restaurant spend. You can also earn a higher return using the AMEX Gold Card which earns 4x Membership Rewards Points that can be transferred to Marriott at a 1:1 ratio. The AMEX Gold also earns on restaurant spend worldwide and is not restricted to just U.S. restaurant spending.
3x Airfare Booked Directly
Booking airfare with the Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card will earn you 3 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent. Booking direct means you'll need to book your flight through the airline's website, mobile app, or over the phone with the airline's reservation number. Booking through third parties such as Expedia or Orbitz will not earn you the 3x rate. You will also not earn 3x booking through the American Express Travel Portal.
All non-bonus category purchases on the Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card will earn you 2 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent. This is the most points you can earn for non-category spend across Marriott and transfer partner credit cards. If you value Marriott Bonvoy Points, running non-category spend through this card is totally acceptable. If not, you'll want to pick up a great card for everyday spend such as a 2% cash back credit card.
Perks and Benefits
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card is packed to the brim with benefits. This includes annual credits, free night awards, and much more.
$300 Marriott Statement Credit
Every calendar year you will receive $300 in annual statement credits for purchases made at participating Marriott hotels with the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AMEX Card. This benefit is extremely easy to use as long as you typically spend at least $300 with Marriott.
Annual Free Award Night
Every anniversary of your Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card being opened, you will receive a certificate for a Free Night Award. This award is good for a free one-night stay at any hotel that costs up to 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points. This can get you into as high as a category 7 during off-peak pricing. This is a very valuable certificate that can be worth a few hundred dollars.
The annual free award night certificate and the $300 statement credit should easily cover the cost of the annual fee.
Global Entry/TSA PreCheck
It would not be a premium card without the standard statement credit towards a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application. This Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card perk will be triggered once the card is used to pay for the application fee. It does not matter who's name is on the application and it does not matter if you're approved or not. It will still trigger the credit.
$100 Property Credit
When you book a stay at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis, you will receive up to $100 in property credit for your stay when you select the special room rate offered only to Marriott Brilliant AMEX card members. Your stay must be for at least 2 nights and you must use the Brilliant AMEX to pay for your stay. The $100 property credit is good for qualifying charges including room service and spa treatments.
Priority Pass Select Membership
You'll receive complimentary Priority Pass Select Membership as a Marriott Brilliant AMEX cardholder. This membership gives you unlimited lounge visits to more than 1,000 lounges worldwide and allows you to bring up to two guests per visit.
15 Elite Nights
Every calendar year you will receive 15 elite night credits towards achieving a higher elite status with Marriott. You can earn 15 elite night credits with a personal Marriott credit card and 15 elite nights with a business Marriott credit card for a total of 30 elite night credits per year. Elite credits offered on other personal Marriott credit cards that you have will not stack with this card.
Marriott Elite Status
You'll receive complimentary Marriott Gold Elite Status as a Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card member. This offers a bunch of great benefits such as 25% bonus points, 2pm late checkout, enhanced room upgrades, and more.
You can spend your way to Marriott Platinum Elite status by running $75,000 in spend through this card during the calendar year.
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card offers complimentary in-room premium internet access at Marriott hotels.
Standard AMEX Benefits
You'll receive several great American Express benefits as a Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant AMEX cardholder. Those benefits include:
- AMEX Offers
- ShopRunner Membership
- Return Protection
- Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance
- Trip Delay Insurance
- Baggage Insurance
- Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance
- Extended Warranty
- Purchase Protection
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card is 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points. The value of the sign up bonus will depend on how much you value Marriott Bonvoy Points. The Point Calculator pegs these points at 0.7 cents each but you can easily get a higher value with a little research and by using the popular 5th night free benefit.
In terms of free nights, this can earn you as many as 15 nights at an off-peak Category 1 hotel or at least one night in a category 8 hotel during off-peak season.
Marriott Bonvoy Points can also be transferred to airline partners. Marriott Points transfer at a 3:1 ratio for most airline partners meaning 75,000 points will earn you 25,000 airline miles. You'll also receive a bonus 15,000 points for every 60,000 points transferred which will give you an additional 5,000 airline miles for a total of 30,000 miles.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card annual fee is $450 which is around the norm for premium credit cards. With the annual $300 in statement credits and annual free night certificate for a stay at a 50,000-point hotel, the annual fee is easily covered. Other benefits offered on this card can also help add extra value such as the 15 elite nights if you're working your way towards status or the $100 credits the card offers when staying at The Ritz-Carlton & St Regis brands.
Authorized User Fee
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card authorized user fee is $0. If you have family or friend that spend in the Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card's bonus categories, I would recommend adding them as authorized users. While additional users of the Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card they will not earn elite benefits like authorized users of the AMEX Platinum Cards, they will still be able to assist in building Marriott Bonvoy Points without adding additional fees to the card.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Marriott Brilliant AMEX Card has a foreign transaction fee of 0%. This means you can spend freely overseas and earn Marriott Bonvoy Points without worrying about additional penalties and fees.
