The Wyndham Rewards Gold Card offers several perks that would benefit anyone staying at Wyndham Hotels but comes up short when compared to it's annual fee counterpart, the Wyndham Rewards Platinum Card. The Platinum version offers a 6,000 Wyndham Point bonus annually worth $72 since Wyndham Points are worth 1.2 cents. The annual fee of the Wyndham Rewards Platinum is $75 which means you'll end up with a true annual fee of around $3. If you stay at Wyndham a few times a year, your best bet is to go with the card that earns you more Wyndham Rewards Points.

Bonus Categories

The Wyndham Rewards Gold features four bonus categories which are Wyndham Purchases, gas, utility, and grocery store purchases. There is not limit to the amount of Wyndham Rewards Points you can earn spending in these categories. Below is a breakdown of each bonus category.

3x Wyndham Properties

The Wyndham Rewards Gold earns 3 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent on Wyndham Properties. This includes Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, North American vacation properties, on-property spend, and maintenance fees for timeshare properties. This is equal to a 3.6% return which is a little under par compared to other no-annual fee credit cards such as the Choice Privileges Card (5% return) and Hilton Honors Card (4.2% return). If you're really looking to earn Wyndham Rewards Points, I would recommend grabbing up the Wyndham Rewards Platinum since it earns a 6% return on Wyndham Properties.

3x La Quinta Inn

Due to the merging of Wyndham and La Quinta, the Wyndham Rewards Platinum earns 3 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent at La Quinta brand hotels. This is a great benefit for anyone that stays at La Quinta Inn that still wants to earn Wyndham Rewards Points. Just remember that both programs aren't yet merged entirely and that La Quinta properties are not qualified stays and therefore do not yet earn Wyndham Rewards points with the Wyndham Rewards Loyalty Program. So while you will earn Wyndham Rewards Points using the card, you will earn La Quinta Returns Points for the actual stay.

2x Gas Station

Spending on gas with the Wyndham Rewards Gold earns 2 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. The 2x bonus will only apply to merchants whose primary job is to offer gas. This will include gas stations such as Exxon, Hess, Speedway, and BP. Using the Wyndham Rewards Gold in this category will earn you a 2.4% return which is okay if you're looking to earn Wyndham Rewards Points, but it can be beat with several no-annual fee cash back cards. Some excellent gas cards consist of the PNC Cash Rewards Card (4% cash back) and Bank of America Cash Rewards (3% cash back). Depending on how much you spend on gas, you can earn Wyndham Rewards nights faster by earning a higher rate of cash back with those cards and using the rewards to cover Wyndham Purchases.

2x Utility

Using your Wyndham Rewards Gold to pay for your utilities will earn you 2 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. Gas, water, and electric bills are some of the purchases that fall under this category. This is not a common bonus category in the credit card world, so this is good return if you're looking to earn Wyndham Rewards Points.

2x Grocery

The Wyndham Rewards Gold earns 2 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent on grocery purchases. This includes supermarkets, but not super stores and warehouses. Vons, Meijer, Winn Dixie, and Publix are some examples of grocery stores that qualify for this bonus. Places such as Target and Walmart will not apply for the double Wyndham Points.

This card provides the same return of 2.4% which is on the low side. The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday earns a slightly higher rate of 3% cash back. If you want to bump it up a notch and don't mind paying an annual fee, you can go for the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred which earns 6% cash back on up to $6,000 in grocery purchases.

1x Non Category

Purchases outside of the categories listed above will earn you 1 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. I would not recommend putting non-category spend on this card unless you're a few points away from earning a redemption. Non-category spend should be placed on higher earning cards such as the Capital One Quicksilver (1.5% cash back) or Citi Double Cash (2% cash back).

Perks and Benefits

Wyndham Rewards Gold Status

Holders of the Wyndham Rewards Gold will receive complimentary Wyndham Rewards Gold Status. This is uaully obtained after staying 5 nights at Wyndham Properties. Gold status comes with free Wifi, a preferred room at check-in, late check-out, and more. Other no-annual fee cards that offer status are the Choice Privileges Card (Gold Status) and the Hilton Honors Card (Silver Status).

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Wyndham Rewards Gold sign up bonus is 15,000 bonus points after the first purchase. Wyndham points are worth about 1.2 cents each so this is equal to about $180 which isn't bad for not having a spend goal.
