The Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard is the best choice when it comes to purchases online or in-store at Barnes and Noble bookstores. The card earns a mix of cash back and BN points which sets it apart from most reward cards. High spending on the Barnes and Noble card will even grant a 12 month membership.

Barclay and Noble Point Value

Points earned with the Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard are worth 1 cent each. These points are earned by using this card to make purchases. Barnes and Noble points are automatically redeemed for a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card upon reaching 2,500 points. These points are not transferable and cannot be used for anything else.

Bonus Categories

The Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard features two bonus categories in which one earns cash back in the form a statement credit, while the other earns Barnes and Noble points (BN points) redeemable for gift cards. Below are the details of both categories.

5% Barnes and Noble

The Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard earns 5% cash back per $1 spent on all purchases made online or in-store at Barnes and Noble. Do note that this card does NOT earn points on Barnes and Noble purchases. You will only receive 5% cash back in the form of a statement credit for this category. Earning a 5% return on this category is about the best you can do in the credit card world. If you do a great deal of shopping at Barnes and Noble, this is a card you will want to have in your wallet.

2x Restaurant

Spending at restaurants with the Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard will earn 2 BN Points per $1 spent. Purchases made at Barnes and Noble Caf├ęs will not earn reward points. This is equal to a 2% return which is not bad, but a better return could be earned with other cards such as the Barclay Uber Card (4% cash back) and Capital One SavorOne Card (3% cash back). Both cards have no annual fee, no authorized user fee, and no foreign transaction fees.

1x Non-Category

Any spending on the Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard outside of the two categories listed above will earn 1 BN point per $1 spent. Do note that using this card for Barnes and Noble purchases will not earn any BN points (0x points), but it will earn 5% cash back as stated above. Unless you're short a few points of hitting the 2,500 point threshold for a Barnes and Noble gift card, I would not recommend putting any non-category spend on this card. A better rate can be obtained from other cash back cards such as the Citi Double Cash (2% cash back) or Capital One Quicksilver Card (1.5% cash back). Both cards have no annual fee and can get earn you $25 off Barnes and Noble faster than putting non-category spend on this card.

Perks and Benefits

Barnes and Noble Membership

Running $7,500 in spend through the Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard within the credit card account year (the 365 day period prior to the anniversary date) will earn a 12 month Barnes and Noble membership. If you already have a Barnes and Noble membership, it will be extended by 12 months. This membership comes with 40% off list price of hardcover bestsellers, 10% off B&N price of almost everything else, free express shipping on orders with no minimum purchases, and member exclusive offers via email throughout the year.

In my opinion, you would be better off purchasing the $25 Barnes and Noble membership and using it's benefits along with the 5% cash back you'll get from using the Barclaycard. Unless you spend $7,500 a year at Barnes and Noble, I don't think it's worth putting that much restaurant and non-category spend on the card when you can earn cash back with other reward cards which could pay for the $25 membership several times over.

Sign Up Bonus

The Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard sign up bonus is a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card after your first purchase. This gift card will be mailed to you once you satisfy this easy requirement.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard does not have an annual fee. You will always earn a solid return of 5% cash back when spending with their bookstores and earn the same return on restaurants and non-category purchases.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the Barnes and Noble Mastercard. If you have friends or family that frequently visit Barnes and Noble, I recommend adding them as authorized users so that you can build up your BN points and also earn a great deal in statement credit.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The foreign transaction fee for the Barclaycard Barnes and Noble is 3%. Any spend on this card out of country will gobble away the cash back or BN points you've earned with the card. I do not recommend using this card for international travel. I recommend using the Barclay Uber Card for foreign transaction purchases. The Uber Card's rewards do not have to be used towards Uber nor do you have to even make transactions with Uber. You can use rewards toward anything you want such as Barnes and Noble purchases and gift cards!

Recommended Cards

When it comes to purchasing directly with Barnes and Noble, this Barclaycard is the best of the best. No other card will get you an easy return of 5% off of purchases with this bookstore. As far as restaurant and non-category spending, this can be placed on better reward cards that can get your nose in a book faster than the Barnes and Noble Mastercard.

Citi Double Cash

The Citi Double Cash Card earns 2% cash back on purchases. You'll earn 1% cash back when you use the card to pay for the purchase and 1% cash back when you pay off those purchases. The return on this card will always be 2% due to having no annual fee. This would be one of the best choices for putting non-category spend through if you want solid earnings on miscellaneous spending.

Barclay Uber Card

If you spend a lot at restaurants, the Barclay Uber Card will have your back when it comes to earning an excellent return. The Uber card earns 4% cash back on restaurants, bars, and Uber Eats. Besides using the cash back earned for Uber, it can also be used for statement credits and gift cards. It would take $1,250 in restaurant spend on the Barnes and Noble Card to reach a $25 gift card while it only takes the Barclay Uber card $625 in spend to reach a $25 reward.

SavorOne Card

Another great card for restaurant spend is the Capital One SavorOne Card which earns 3% cash back on grocery. Just like the Barclay Uber Card, this card will get you to a $25 reward faster than the Barclaycard Barnes and Noble Mastercard when it comes to restaurant spending.
