The Citi Best Buy Visa is a great option for anyone that wants to earn a 5% return shopping in-store or online at Best Buy along with earning a decent return across several other categories. The card also grants you access to Best Buy's flexible financing program which allows you to receive financing on Best Buy purchases of $199 and up. If you frequently shop at Best Buy, I recommend picking up either this card or the Best Buy Store Card.

Bonus Categories

The Best Buy Visa Card features three primary bonus categories that earn bonus points which are Best Buy, dining, and supermarket purchases. The card also features gas station purchases as a "limited time" bonus category, but it's been on the card for so long that it might as well be considered a standard category. There's no limit to the amount of bonus points you can earn spending in the bonus categories and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with the card overall.

2.5x Best Buy

Using the Best Buy Visa Card to make in-store and online purchases at Best Buy will earn you 2.5 points per $1 spent. At a value of 0.2 cents per point, this is a return of 5% which is pretty great when it comes to Best Buy. With this card alone, you'll be able to earn 250 points for a $5 reward with only $100 in spend. That's five times as fast when compared to the earnings of a basic My Best Buy Member that does not have the card.

Members who have My Best Buy Elite Plus Status will earn an additional 0.5 points per $1 spent for a total return of 6% (see perks & benefits listed below).

1.5x Gas Station*

When you use your Best Buy Visa Card at gas stations, you will earn 1.5 Best Buy Points per $1 spent. This is considered to be a *limited time* bonus category, but it has been on the card for almost two years. Just keep in mind that this category can be removed from the card at any time since it's considered "limited".

Spending in this category will earn you 3% return on gas which is solid earning if you're looking for Best Buy Points. If you want to earn a higher return, you can obtain such with other cards. Some good choice includes the Ducks Unlimited Visa which earns 5% cash back on both gas and sporting good store purchases and the PNC Cash Rewards Card which earns 4% cash back on gas purchases along with solid return on several other categories.

1x Supermarket

Supermarket purchases made with the Best Buy Visa Card will earn you 1x Best Buy Points per $1 spent which is equal to a low 2% return. Running spend through this card isn't the worst, but there are plenty of cards that offer a signficantly higher return. This includes the 6% cash back with the Blue Cash Preferred or 3% cash back with the no-fee Blue Cash Everyday and Point earning cards like the AMEX Gold or AMEX Everyday Preferred which both earns 4% return and higher.

1x Dining

Using your Best Buy Visa Card on dining purchases will earn you 1 Best Buy Rewards Point per $1 spent. Eligible purchases include fine dining, fast food restaurants, and purchases made at bars.

Earning a single point will be equal to a 2% return which is on the low side of rewards but not as bad as the low earning on the supermarket category. You can generally find no-fee cards that offer a 3% return such as the PNC Cash Rewards Card and the Capital One Savor One Card. You can also earn a higher return with cards that have an annual fee such as the 4x earnings of the AMEX Gold Card and 4% cash back on the Capital One Savor Card.

0.5x Non-Category

All other purchases made on the Best Buy Visa Card will earn you 0.5 Best Buy Points per $1 spent which is equal to a very low 1% return. I highly sugguest against putting any non-category purchases on this card as you can easily pick up a 2% cash back credit card and earn rewards two times faster. This includes cards such as the PayPal CashBack Mastercard and the Citi Double Cash.

Perks and Benefits

The Best Buy Visa Card offers one primary benefit which is the option for flexible financing on Best Buy purchases.

Best Buy Flexible Financing

Best Buy purchases made with your Best Buy Visa Card will be eligible for flexible financing. Do note that will only apply to purchases that are $199 up and if you choose to go with Flexible Financing, you will not earn the 2.5x multiplier on your purchase.

best buy financing or 5%
You will have to choose between financing or the 2.5x points (5%) when you make a qualifying Best Buy purchase.

Flexible Financing options with Best Buy includes, but is not limited to:

  • 6-Month Financing On Sitewide Purchases
  • 12-Month Financing On Sitewide Purchases
  • 18-Month Financing On Appliance & Geek Squad Purchases
  • 24-Month Financing On Home Theatre & Geek Squad Purchases
  • 24-Month Financing On Unlocked Phones & Geek Squad Purchases
  • 24-Month Financing On Select Exercise Equipment

Using Best Buy's financing option can be a good idea if you plan on paying the entire balance during the financing period. Failure to do so will cause you to pay interest and thus eat away at any rewards you may have earned.

Typically, the minimum balance that Best Buy requires will cut it if you're looking to pay off your purchase. If you decided to use Best Buy's flexible financing, make sure that you divide the cost by the number of financing months you have. This will give you the amount you should be paying in order to hit a $0 balance on your last payment.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Best Buy Visa Card sign up bonus is 10% back in rewards on your first day of purchases or flexible financing. Since flexible financing is always avaialble, you should go for the 10% off your purchases as you'll get a lot more value out of that.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Best Buy Visa Card has no annual fee. This means you'll always earn a positive return when running spend through the card. I highly recommend having this card if you frequently shop at Best Buy.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the Best Buy Visa Card. I recommend adding friends and family if they spend money at Best Buy as it will help you earn points faster and push you closes to your next Best Buy Certificate redemption.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Best Buy Visa Card does not have a foreign transaction fee. This means you can use the card anywhere VISA is accepted and earn Best Buy Rewards Points for your purchases. While it's nice that you can earn points without a fee, you can generally find better rewards cards for international spending and travel.
