Macy's AMEX Card
"Will you be using your Macy's today?" probably sounds familiar if you've purchased items from inside a Macy's store. This question is usually followed by a "Huh?" or "What did you say?" since the sentence itself doesn't make complete sense considering they don't insert the word 'Credit Card' anywhere in the statement. It's a clever way for them to lead into a spill about the Macy's AMEX and what it offers. Usually the inital bonus for signing up for the card is always 'worth it' since you'll usually save 20% off whatever you're purchasing. The hard part is if you're going to actually use the card beyond that initial savings and if it generates enough of a return to keep in the long run.
The Macys AMEX Card allows Star Program Members to reach Silver, Gold, and Platinum Status based on card spend. Non-cardholders will only be able to acheive the Bronze status. Reaching these various tiers in the Star Rewards Program will grant you perks such as 25% off any day you choose with Star Passes and free shipping. Reaching the highest status of Platinum will enable the card to earn 5% back on Macy's purchases and also allow you to use your card for travel benefits through American Express.
Star Reward Points and Star Money
Macy's Star Rewards Points are worth 1 cent each. Once you accumulate 1,000 points a $10 Star Money reward will be issued. Star Money can be used at Macy's, on macys.com, and for Macy's Backstage. Purchases must be made at Macy's point of sale registers, so stores inside of Macy's such as restaurants will not apply. Star Money is only valid for 30 days and purchases made with all Star Money will not be eligible for discounts. Closing your Macys AMEX or not making a purchases on your account during a consecutive 12-month period will forfeit all points and unused Star Money.

The Macy's AMEX features three bonus categories which are restaurants, gas stations, and supermarkets. A fourth bonus category for Macy's spending can be obtained if you reach Macy's Star Rewards Platinum Tier which requires running $1,200 in spend through the card. Any Macy's spending when you're not at Platinum Tier will result in no rewards (as in 0% earnings). There's no limit to the amount of star rewards you can earn spending in these bonus categories and there is no limit to the amount of star rewards you can earn in general. The Macy's Store Card does not have a network and can only earn spend based on shopping at Macy's in which the cardholder will still earn no points. Below are the details of the bonus categories featured on the Macy's AMEX. Macy's present these as 'cash back' but you're really earning points that you can turn into Star Money so 3% back will be the same as earning 3 Star Points which is equal to 3 cents ($0.03).
Using the Macy's AMEX at restaurants will earn you 3 Star Rewards Points (3%) per $1 spent. This will be at restaurants outside of Macy's that are coded as restaurant and includes fast food and fine dining establishments. This is a 3% return that can be beat by many cash back cards and is nothing to do cartwheels over. One of the best cash back cards is the Barclay Uber Card which earns 4% cash back at restaurants. It also earns cash back for Music and Video Streaming Services (Hulu, Netflix, Apple Music, Spotify, etc.), online shopping, Uber, UberEats and 4 more categories. You can use the cash back earned on the Uber Card and apply it to your Macy's purchases and earn rewards a little faster. The Barclay Uber Card does not have an annual fee.
The Macy's AMEX earns 2 Star Rewards Points (2%) per $1 spent for supermarket/grocery purchases. American Express considers a supermarket as being a place that offers a wide variety of food and household products such as meat, fresh produce, dairy, canned and packaged goods, household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. This includes place such as, but not limited to, Meijer, Vons, Giant Eagle, Winn-Dixie, and Foodtown. There are lots of cards that offer a similar return of 2% on supermarkets, but one of the best in the bunch will be the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card. The Blue Cash earns 3% back on supermarkets, 2% back on gas stations, and 2% back on department stores. This means you can start earning 2% cash back at Macy's without having to spend $1,200 first. On top of that, you can match the same gas stations earning that the Macy's AMEX has. The Blue Cash Everyday does not have an annual fee.
2% Gas Station
Gas station spending on the Macy's AMEX will earn 2 Star Rewards Points (2%) per $1 spent. American Express considers gas stations to be places that, of course, specialize in gas. These are places such as Exxon, Mobil, Hess, and Shell. Gas stations that are part of supermarkets or warehouse clubs will not usually count towards the 2% cash back bonus. There are reward cards that earn a lot more on gas station purchases. The PNC Cash Rewards Card features the same categories as the Macy's AMEX. The PNC Card earns 4% back on gas stations, 3% back on restaurants, and 2% back on supermarkets. Gas station spend alone will earn you cash back at double the speed of using the Macy's AMEX. The PNC Cash Rewards Card does not have an annual fee.
Spend $1,200 on the Macy's AMEX will push you to Macy's Platinum Tier in their Star Rewards program. Platinum tier members who on their Macy's AMEX for Macy's purchases will earn 5 Star Rewards Points (5%) per $1 spent. Members who reach this status will remain at the tier for the remainder of the current calendar year as well as the next full calendar year assuming the card is still opened and not deliquent. Earning 5% on Macy's purchases is a great return, but the fact you have to spend $1,200 and get no rewards first is the challenging hurdle. If you're a consistant Macy's customer and spend a guaranteed $1,200+ at Macy's every year, the Macy's AMEX can be very useful just because you'll maintain that 5% earning rate every year thereafter and make up for the 0% in rewards over time. If you don't spend that much at Macy's then I would recommend putting Macy's spend on a card that earns cash back for department store purchases such as the Blue Cash Everyday (unlimited 2% cash back; no annual fee) or Blue Cash Preferred (unlimited 3% cash back; $95 annual fee).

The Macy's AMEX benefits consist of earning bonus Star Points, extra saving offers at checkout, birthday surprises, free shipping, and more. These benefits come with earning status in Macy's Star Rewards Program. Macy's program has four tiers which are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum status.

Macy's Platinum Members will receive 5 Star Rewards Points (5%) on Macy's purchases when they use their Macy's AMEX or Macy's Store Card. Macy's Platinum Members will receive savings through American Express on flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises and vacation packages. Macy's Platinum status basically allows members to partake in the standard travel perks that are offered on AMEX's travel and cash back cards.
Sign Up Bonus
The Macy's AMEX Card and Macy's Store Card sign up bonuses vary depending on holidays, promotions, and more. The most common Macy's Credit Card bonus is saving 20% off your first purchase. This is initial one-time perk that makes the card very tempeting to pick up if you're making a large purchases. The sign up bonus is usually limited to saving up to $100 which is $500 in Macy's merchandise. Saving $100 on a purchase you were going to make is an awesome deal. I recommend making sure you actually shop at Macy's enough to make the Macy's Credit Card Benefits worth it.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Macy's AMEX and Macy's Store Card does not have an annual fee meaning you will not have to worry about trying to reach a certain amount of spend to make the card worth it. If you want the 20% off sign up bonus and don't care about obtaining high status in the program, you can run a few dollars through this card just to maintain Mary's Silver status and partake in a few extra benefits.
Authorized User Fee
There is no authorized user fee for adding additional users to the Macy's AMEX or Macy's Store Card. If you have friends or family that spend at Macy's, adding them as authorized user can help you reach Macy's Platinum Member status. This will allow everyone to earn 5% off Macy's purchases while maintaning that status assuming at least $1,200 a year in Macy's purchases are being put through the card.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee for the Macy's AMEX card is 3% meaning you do not want to use this card outside of the United States. Foreign transaction fees will eat away at your Macy's Star Rewards faster than you can earn them. If you're looking for cards to use internationally, you'll want to grab one with a 0% fee like any of the Capital One Credit Cards such as the Quicksilver Card or a travel card like the Barclay Uber Card.
