Sam's Club Rewards
Get the details on earning cash back in the Sam's Club Rewards program and calculate how much you can earn based on your spend with the Sam's Club cards.
Sam's Club is an American membership-only warehouse club. Sam's Club has a little under 600 locations in the United States as well as other locations in Mexico, China, and Brazil. They are owned by Walmart and headquartered out of the same city of Bentonville, Arkansas.
Sam's Club Rewards
Sam's Club has two different cash rewards programs. They have one available to U.S. Sam's Club Plus members and one for Sam's Club Mastercard holders. It's possible to accrue cash back in both programs and I would recommend such if you frequently shop at Sam's Club. All earned rewards in both programs are attached to your membership account for you to use once they're able to be redeemed.
Sam's Club Plus Membership
There's two type of Sam's Club memberships: Sam's Club and Sam's Plus. Sam's Club membership is the basic membership that allows you to make purchases inside of Sam's Club locations. Sam's Plus is a higher form of membership that grants access to Sam's Club and comes several additional benefits which includes:
- 2% back on qualifying Sam's Club purchases
- Free shipping with no minimum shopping online at samsclub.com
- Early shopping hours before the store is opened to the public (select stores)
- Free select prescriptions at the pharmacy
- 20% discount on eyeglasses and free shipping on contact lenses
Sam's Club Plus membership costs $100 per year whereas the basic Sam's Club membership will cost you $45.
Is Sam's Club Plus Membership Worth It?
It's a $55 difference between Club and Plus membership. Looking at spend alone, you'll need to spend $2,750 per year or $229 per month to make up the difference based on the 2% cash back you'll earn shopping at Sam's Club. If you spend more than that per month/year, Sam's Club Plus will be worth it based on spend.
Looking beyond spend and at the other benefits, Plus membership offers several perks that can easily be worth more than $55. Depending on how often you shop online at samsclub.com, the free shipping benefit can easily overwrite the $55 difference you paid. The 20% discounts on eyeglasses and free/discounted pharmacy prescriptions can also easily knock out that difference.
All-in-all, if you actually use buy stuff from Sam's Club in-store or online on a consistent basis, picking up the Sam's Club Plus membership will more than likely be worth it.
Earning Cash Rewards w/ Sam's Club Plus
You'll earn 2% in Cash Rewards on qualifying pre-tax purchases minus any redeemed savings or discounts during a membership year with a maximum reward of $500 per membership per 12-month period. This means you can earn on up to $25,000 in spend per membership year.
Only the primary member or complimentary household cardholder (usually a spouse, roommate, etc.) can earn Cash Rewards on purchases. Add-On members will not earn Cash Rewards for the primary member nor will they earn rewards for themselves.
Do note that are many exclusions when it comes to earning cash rewards. Before you calculate if the card is worth it (it usually still is), you'll want to note that you cannot earn Cash Rewards on the following purchases (pulled from terms & conditions):
- Alcoholic Beverages
- Merchandise or services sold or provided on SamsClub.com website including those websites not hosted by Sam's Club.
- Gift Cards, including third party Gift Cards and eGift Cards
- Inventory, sales, or services belonging to or offered by third parties (including but not limited to travel, identity protection services, subscriptions, auto buying program, insurance, merchant credit card payment processing services, business payment solutions, etc.)
- Lottery tickets
- Service contracts (example - mobile phone contracts)
- Pharmacy - prescriptions
- Photo Center
- Postage stamps
- Services and Labor (examples - delivery, tire installation, etc.)
- Taxes and fees (including sales tax, deposits, miscellaneous fees etc.)
- Service Plans
It seems like a lot, but Sam's Club sells a lot of stuff. Outside of milk, you still have groceries, electronics, home & garden, and many more categories. So don't let the list of exclusions worry you.

Redeeming Sam's Club Plus Cash Rewards
About two months before the end of the membership year, your earned Cash Rewards are loaded onto your Sam's Club account. You can only hold up to a maximum balance $2,000 in Cash Rewards. Once you hit that max, you will no longer accrue rewards so make sure you're using your earned rewards.
Cash Rewards can be redeemed for purchases online, at any Sam's Club location, in the Sam's Club mobile app, or for cash at a register in Sam's Club. This can only be done by the primary member or complimentary household cardholder.
If you close your Sam's Club account or downgrade to the a regular Sam's Club membership, you will have up to one year to collect any previously award Cash Rewards.
Sam's Club Mastercard Cash Rewards
The Sam's Club Mastercard earns cash back per $1 spent on the card. Cash back earned with the card is automatically loaded onto your Sam's Club membership each February for the Cash Back earned during the previous calendar year. So for example, all of the cash back you earn up until December 31st of this year will be loaded onto your membership next year during the month of February.
Rewards earned with the Sam's Club Mastercard will have the same redemption options as the Cash Rewards earned in the Sam's Club Plus Membership program. This includes redeeming them for purchases online, at any Sam's Club location, in the Sam's Club mobile app, or for cash at a register in Sam's Club. Do note that Sam's Club no longer mails out your rewards in the form of a checks every February (ended February 2020).

Credit Card Rewards Calculators
Sam's Club has one credit card available to members and that's the Sam's Club Mastercard. The card earns a superb return on gas stations, restaurant, and travel purchases. The Sam's Club Mastercard does not earn any bonus cash back shopping at Sam's Club meaning you'll earn 1% cash back. If you want to earn rewards with Sam's Club, you'll either need to sign up for a Sam's Club Plus account to earn 2% Cash Rewards on eligible purchases or pick up another rewards card such as a 2% cash back credit card.
You can click on the Sam's Club credit card below to learn about the bonus categories, perks & benefits, standard sign up bonus, and fees of the card. It also has it's own Sam's Club cash back calculator. The calculator will calculate how much cash back you can earn and the cash value of the credit card based on your monthly/yearly spend, how much each card benefit is worth to you, and the fees (membership) of the card. You can compare the results side by side any credit card featured on the site. Any spend you enter into the credit card calculator will carry over to all credit card calculators on the site, so there's no need to re-enter spend when jumping page to page.
Comparison Calculators features side by side comparisons of frequently compared credit cards or comparisons requested through our YouTube channel. These calculators are already set up so you can immediately start calculating total rewards as well as the cash value of the compared cards based on your monthly/yearly spend, how much the card benefits are worth to you, and the annual fees. Comparison Calculators does not allow you to change the designated cards being compared. If you want to compare credit cards outside of the comparisons listed below, I recommend searching for the credit card you want to compare and then using its calculator to compare it against anything featured on the site.
Online Portals + SamsClub.com
If you haven't signed up for a Sam's Club membership yet or you have a membership and plan on making purchases on Samsclub.com, I highly recommend you consider using an online shopping or cash back portal. This is how they work:
- You find the store on the online portal of your choosing
- Click on that portal's affiliate link for that store
- You'll land on the store's normal home page to shop as normal
- Once you make a purchase, the shopping portal will be notified
- You'll earn cash back (or other rewards) with that online portal
Using cash back and shopping portals shopping at Sam's Club is an easy way to double and triple dip on rewards because you'll still earn rewards with Sam's Club (assuming it's an eligible purchase) as well as the rewards your credit card may offer. The best thing about online portals is that they're free to use as they make their money off of you clicking on their affiliate links and making purchases.
I recommend reading up on using shopping portals and cash back portals as you can use them for just about everything you purchase online including booking hotels, car rentals, flights, and other forms of travel.
