Walmart Mastercard (Synchrony)
The Walmart Mastercard and Store Card can be a good idea for anyone that consistently shops online at Walmart, but if you shop in-store this card will not be of much use to you since in-store purchases will only earn you 1% cash back. You can also earn some additional cash back on Murphy's USA and Walmart Gas stations. As far as benefits you have the option for special 6-12 month financing options.
Redeem Walmart Cash Back
Cash back earned with the Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card are automatically applied to your account in the form of a statement credit. There is no other option for these rewards which makes it very restrictive. If you want to be able to use your hard earned cash back for other redemptions such as airfare tickets, hotels, rental cars, gift cards, and more, you will want to pick up a rewards card that isn't tied to a specific store such as the Barclay Uber Card or American Express Cash Magnet Card.
Bonus Categories
The Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card both feature three bonus categories which consist of purchases with/at Walmart.com, Murphy USA gas stations, and Walmart gas stations. These cards do not earn bonus points for shopping in-store at Walmart. There is no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn spending in these bonus categories and there is no limit to the amount of rewards you can earn. Rewards earned with the Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Credit Card will never expire. Below are the details on the bonus categories of the Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card.
3% Walmart.com
Shopping online at Walmart.com and using the Walmart Mastercard or Store Card to pay for your purchase will earn you 3% cash back per $1 spent. This will also apply to Walmart.com purchases that you pay for online and pick up in store as well. If you're not an online shopper then this card would not be for you. You would be better off with a 2% card like the Citi Double Cash to earn rewards to apply towards Walmart.
2% Murphy USA
Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card purchases at Murphy USA gas stations will earn 2% cash back per $1 spent. Murphy USA's are typically located near a Walmart and act as a partnering gas station which could make earning cash back with them very convienent. A few better choices consist of the Sam's Club Mastercard which earns 5% back at gas stations and the PNC Cash Rewards Card which earns 4% cash back. While those two cards do earn more, if you're able use the 3% Walmart.com category, keeping your rewards in one spot will help you build and redeem them faster.
2% Walmart Gas Stations
You will earn 2% cash back per $1 spent when you use the Walmart Mastercard or Walmart Store Card at Walmart Gas Stations. As with the Murphy USA category, this can be convienent after picking up your Walmart.com online order due to the fact these gas stations are usually not too far from Walmart. Walmart gas stations may not code as gas station. It depends on the card so your best bet would be this card or the Sam's Club Mastercard when it comes to spending at Walmart Gas Stations.
1% Non-Category
Any card spending on the Walmart Mastercard or Walmart Store Card will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. The Walmart Mastercard can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted. The Walmart Store Card on the other hand doesn't have network so you will earn 1% on the Store Card when using it in-store at Walmart, Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets & Sam's Club. Earning 1% on any of these purchases is very low. I recommend picking up a card that satisfies other categories that you may do heavy spending in or at least a 1.5% cash back card such as the Capital One Quicksilver or Chase Freedom Unlimited Card.
Perks and Benefits
Special Financing Options
The Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card both offer access to special 6-12 month financing options when it comes to big ticket items. This can be useful if you plan on buying something from Walmart but don't want to pay it all up front. Just be sure to pay it on time and pay it off because the APR on both of these cards are astronimical.
Sign Up Bonus
The Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card sign up bonus is usually a $25-$30 statement credit when you open the card and make $25-$30 in purchases on the card on the day of opening. This assumes you're opening the card online while shopping or in-store. If you don't get approved immediately, you will receive a similar bonus in the mail. This sign up bonus do change from time to time. They may also offer special financing as well as a few other options.
Credit Card Fees
Fees | |
---|---|
Annual Fee | |
Authorized User Fee | |
Foreign Transaction Fee |
Annual Fee
The Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card does not have an annual fee. This means you will always be earning the max return when running spend through these cards.
Authorized User Fee
The authorized user fee for the Walmart Mastercard and Walmart Store Card is $0. If you have friends and family that shop at Walmart.com or visit either of the two gas stations, adding them will help bost your cash back earnings.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee for the Walmart Mastercard is 3% which means using this card outside of the United States will drain your rewards faster than you can earn them. I do not recommend using this card for international purchases. There are plenty of cards that would work better such as the Capital One Quicksilver Card and Barclay Uber Card.

You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category.
