The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard is the primary store card for those shopping with Walmart. It earns a great return across multiple avenues of shopping with Walmart that makes it hard to beat when compared to other top rewards cards. If your mainly shop at Walmart, this will be a card that you want to consider adding to your wallet.

Bonus Categories

The Capital One Walmart Mastercard features seven categories with five of them being Walmart related and the other two being dining and travel purchases. There is no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn spending in each bonus category and no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn with the Walmart Mastercard in general. Cash back earned with the Walmart Mastercard is for the life of the account. If your account is closed, you will lose any rewards you have not redeemed.

5% Walmart.com

The Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 5% cash back per $1 spent shopping online at Walmart.com. This is the highest return you can earn spending with Walmart. Everything that you can buy in-store can usually be purchased online. This includes auto, electronics, home improvement, cell phones, clothing, and just about everything else under the sun. Occasionally you may be able to earn 5% at Walmart if it's featured as a quarterly rotating category on either the Discover IT or Chase Freedom, but if you're looking for a great steady return, the Walmart Rewards Mastercard is what you want to consider.

5% Walmart Mobile Apps

The Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 5% cash back per $1 spent on purchases made through the Walmart Mobile App. The mobile app can be used similar to the website. You can browse, search, and buy Walmart.com products as well as create shopping lists, handle prescription refills, check prices and product availability by store, and even find aisle locations of products you're shopping for.

2% Walmart (In-Store)

If you have to make an in-store purchase at Walmart, the Walmart Rewards Mastercard will earn you 2% cash back per $1 spent. Earning 2% cash back at Walmart is not bad at all. Most rewards cards do not count stores like Walmart and Target as 'grocery' or 'department' stores. They're usually in their own bracket or labeled as warehouse stores. This is usually the reason why store cards with warehouse stores is the best way to go for earning cash back. While I do advise that it's best to purchase as much as you can through Walmart.com for the 5% cash back, using the Walmart Rewards Mastercard at Walmart when you have to make an in-store purchase is a solid option.

2% Walmart and Murphy Gas Stations

The Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 2% cash back per $1 spent at Walmart and Murphy brand gas stations. This is great for anyone that grabs up gas at either gas station. While there are better cash back credit cards to use for gas, Walmart and Murphy gas stations doesn't always have a merchant code of 'gasoline'. Most times these two gas stations code as retail/merchandise or a variation of such. So using a credit card that features gas station as a bonus category may end up earning you rewards at a non-category rate. This is why if you typically buy gas at Walmart, you will want to consider the Walmart Rewards Mastercard to make sure that you're earning at least 2% cash back.

2% Purchase of Gift Cards At Walmart

The Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 2% cash back on gift cards that are purchased at/with Walmart. This includes buying them in-store, online, and through the App. Earning 2% cash back on gift cards is "okay" if you're picking up a gift card or two while shopping occasionally, but if you purchase lots of gift cards during the month/year, there are better ways to earn rewards. Most big chain grocery stores and office supply stores sell gift cards. This means you can pick up cards like the Blue Cash Preferred (6% cash back grocery), AMEX Gold (4x Membership Rewards Points grocery), and Chase Ink Business Cash (5% cash back office supply stores) to achieve excellent returns on gift card purchases.

2% Dining

Dining purchases made on the Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 2% cash back per $1 spent which isn't bad. There are plenty of rewards credit cards that can earn an easy 3% or higher on dining purchases including several with no annual fee.

2% Travel

All travel purchases made on the Walmart Rewards Mastercard earns 2% cash back per $1 spent. Again, earning 2% cash back on any category isn't bad. If you're looking for a no-fee card that earns great on travel, both the personal and business Bank of America Cash Rewards Cards offer 3% cash back. You can also earn good returns with the Sam's Club Mastercard (3% cash back) and Costco Anywhere Visa (3% cash back).

1% Non-Category

All spending on the Walmart Rewards Mastercard that doesn't fall under the categories listed above will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. This is of course a terrible return. You will want to earn at least 1.5% cash back or more on your non-category purchases. There's no shortage of 1.5%-2% cash back cards in the market. Some of the more popular ones consist of the Citi Double Cash (2%), PayPal Cashback Mastercard (2%), Capital One Quicksilver Card (1.5%), and AMEX Blue Business Cash (2%).

Perks and Benefits

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard doesn't feature any perks or benefits specific to it being a Walmart credit card. You'll receive the usually great benefits of it being a Capital One Card such as access to their easy to use app and website, security alerts, and the ability to lock your card with a few taps.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard sign up bonus for the Walmart Rewards Mastercard is the ability to earn 5% cash back in Walmart stores for the first 12 months when you use your Capital One Walmart Rewards Card with Walmart Pay. Walmart Pay is a mobile wallet that allows you to purchase items with your phone using a stored credit, debit, or gift card.

Credit Card Fees

Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Capital One Walmart Mastercard has no annual fee. This means you will always earn a positive return when running spend through the card.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard. If you have friends or family that shops at Walmart, I highly recommend adding them to the card to earn cash back faster.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Capital One Walmart Mastercard does not have a foreign transaction fee which is great, but considering the card earns at U.S. and Puerto Rica based stores, it will not get you much more than 1% when used elsewhere. You're better off picking up and of Capital One's other cash back or miles earning cards for international spending.
