Athleta Credit Card
Learn about the benefits of the Athleta Visa Credit Card, calculate how many Athleta Points you can earn, and compare results against top rewards cards.
The Athleta Credit Card earns a solid return for those that love shopping at Gap family brands. It earns 5% back on purchases with Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and it's own brand Athleta. On top of that it offers several annual benefits such as a birthday gift, exclusive points days, expedited shipping passes, and early access to sales and seasonal arrivals. While it does earn an acceptable amount of points for Gap Brands, using this card for non-category purchases will yield a very sad 1% back.
The Athleta Credit Card features one bonus category which is for spending at Gap family brands. There is no limit to the amount of bonus points you can earn spending at Gap brands and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with the card overall.
5x Gap Brands
The Athleta Credit Card earns 5 Athleta Points per $1 spent at Gap family brands. Eligible purchases includes purchases made in-store (U.S. & Canada Only), online, via phone, or mail at:
- Gap Maternity
- Gap Outlet
- Gap Factory Store
- Banana Republic
- Banana Republic Factory Store
- Old Navy
- Old Navy Outlet
Earning 5 points with the Athleta credit card will be equal to earning a 5% return on your purchases which makes this a great option if you spend a great deal at Gap brand stores. Do note that unlike the other Gap credit cards, Athleta credit cards does not offer any kind of special status for running heavy spend through the card. So if you spend enough to earn 5,000 points, you may want to consider a different Gap credit card.
Remember that store cards have a very high interest rate. If you don't plan on paying off your statement every month, the 5% you earn every month will not matter.
Any purchases outside of the Gap family brands will earn 1 Athleta Point per $1 spent. This is a terribly low return of 1% and can be beat by many credit cards. I recommend only using Gap credit cards at Gap brand stores. If you want to earn rewards on purchases outside of Gap, you should grab up one of the many 1.5% cash back credit cards on the market or a no-fee 2% cash back card like the Citi Double Cash or PayPal CashBack Mastercard.
Remember that you will only earn 1x Athleta Points on Gap brand purchases made outside of the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada.
Perks and Benefits
The Athleta Credit Card features a few useful benefits that can be nice for those who enjoy shopping at Athleta.
You will receive a birthday gift annually as long as you have made at least one purchase at Athleta with your Athelta Credit Card within the last 12 months. Your account must also be in good standing. The birthday gift will usually be a coupon to save some additional money off an Athleta purchase.
Expedited Shipping Passes
Every year you will receive two expedited shipping passes that are valid on purchases online at Athleta, Gap, Old Nay, and Banana Republic. Your purchase must include Athleta merchandise otherwise you will not be able to use the pass. Shipping passes can be used to ship to an address anywhere in the U.S. including Puerto Rico.
As an Athleta Credit Card member, you will also have access to the following additional benefits:
- Exclusive Bonus Point Shopping Days
- Early Access To Sales
- Early Access To New Seasonal Arrivals
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the Athleta Credit Card is 20% off your first Athleta purchase when you open and use the card. This is a nice bonus that doesn't seem to have any kind of cap to it so you can earn some serious cash back if you use the card to make a big purchase. This discount will only apply to purchases made with Athleta. Other Gap brands will not be eligible for this discount.
You can "Connect" with Gap on the application page to receive exclusive cardholder-only offers and more. You can earn up to 1,000 Athleta Points when you Connect by entering your email address (which they should have anyway if you have the card) and by selecting Go Paperless for paperless billing. This an easy $10 reward that I recommend grabbing up on the bottom of the credit card details page if you already have a Gap credit card.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Athleta Credit Card has an annual fee of $0. This means you will always earn a 5% return when using your card to make purchases at Gap brand stores.
Authorized User Fee
Adding an authorized user to the Athleta Credit Card will cost you $0. If you have friends or family that shop at Gap brand stores, adding them will help you build your points faster. Make sure your authorized users only use the card for Gap brand purchases and avoid the low return on non-Gap purchases.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee for the Athleta Credit Card is 3%. That means you will be penalized 3% every time you swipe this card outside of the United States. Purchases made at Gap brand stores in Canada will earn you a 5% return, but you'll lose out on 3% of that due to the foreign transaction fee. Other foreign purchases will only earn you 1% so you'll end up losing rewards. I recommend using a card with no foreign transaction fee and to leave this card at home when traveling internationally.
You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category. This calculator will also give you the dollar value of the card based on rewards earned and how much each benefit is worth to you minus the fees. You can click the Compare A Card button to compare this card against another card in the same calculator.
All category spend entered in the primary card's column will carry over to all credit card pages on the site so you don't have to re-enter the same information over again.
