The best use of Marriott Bonvoy Points will come from redeeming them towards free nights at Marriott brand hotels. Points can also be used for gift cards, airfare, and experiences as well as be transferred to a large list of airline partners.
Marriott points value
The Point Calculator values Marriott Bonvoy Points at 0.9 cents each on average meaning that 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points is roughly equal to CA$9 in value. This is the easiest value you can obtain with little to no research before booking your award stay.
Redemption | Point Value (in cents) |
---|---|
Award Nights | 0.8 - 1 |
How to calculate Marriott points value
Marriott points value is not set in stone. They can be worth as little as 0.5 cents and as much as 2 cents per point depending on how you use them, when you use them, and many other factors.
You can calculate the value of Marriott Bonvoy points by dividing the cash cost of your redemption by the amount of points required.
Marriott Bonvoy Points Value = Cash Cost of Hotel ÷ Points Required To Book.

Redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points for the best value
Your Marriott Bonvoy points will have the best value when redeemed for free nights at Marriott brand hotels. You can also squeeze some decent value out of transferring Marriott points to select airline partners.
All other redemptions will give your points low value.
Redeeming points for free nights
Marriott has over 7,000 properties scattered across 130+ countries, so the value you get out of your points for free nights will heavily vary. The easiest value you can obtain is 0.9 cents per point, but it's easily possible to get more or less in value.
As an example, I took a look at the first 10 search results for a weekend stay in August for Vancouver, BC.
The worst redemption value in the bunch was the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver which offered a value of 0.85 cents per point. The best redemption value was the DOUGLAS, Autograph Collection which offered 1.52 cents per point.
The average of all 10 properties came out to 1.1 cents per point which is awesome overall.
As with most flexible reward currencies, it's impossible to assign an exact value to Marriott Bonvoy Points. The value you get out of your points is based on what you're willing to redeem them for.
I recommend setting the bar at 0.9 cents and to strive for that value or higher when redeeming points for free nights.
For example, I set my bar for Marriott Bonvoy at a value of US$0.01 cent per point meaning that I do not redeem them unless I get that or more in value from my redemption. I have been successful with this over the past few years, so I can say, for myself, Marriott Bonvoy Points are worth US$0.01 cent each.
Transferring points to airline partners
Marriott Bonvoy Points can be transferred to over 30 airline partners, mostly at a 3:1 ratio. This means that 3,000 points can be converted to 1,000 airline miles.
When transferring points, Marriott will also throw in a 15,000-point bonus for every 60,000 points you transfer. At the 3:1 ratio, this is equal to an additional 5,000 airline miles.
So all-in-all, a 60,000-Marriott Bonvoy Point transfer would give you 25,000 airline miles which is a fantastic ratio overall.
If you're looking to top off your frequent flyer account or you would just prefer to redeem your points towards airfare versus free nights, Marriott is one of the best hotel programs for earning points.
Marriott Air + Car
Marriott Bonvoy Points can be redeemed for airfare and car rentals through the Marriott Air + Car portal. Redemptions for both airfare and car rentals will greatly devalue your points.
If you're looking to earn a good return on airfare, you should consider earning AMEX Canada Membership Rewards Points as they can be redeemed for up to 2 cents in value for air travel as well as be transferred to Marriott if you need to top off your account.
Redeeming points for gift cards
Marriott Bonvoy Points can be redeemed for gift cards. In USD, this will give your points a value of 0.25 to 0.33 cents per point depending on the denomination.
Denomination | Cost in points | Point value in cents (USD) |
---|---|---|
US$100 | 30,000 | 0.33 |
US$50 | 17,500 | 0.285 |
US$25 | 10,000 | 0.25 |
US$15 | 7,500 | 0.2 |
US$10 | 5,000 | 0.2 |
Redeeming your points for Marriott gift cards will yield a slightly higher value, but I'd recommend avoiding that and just using your points for free nights.
Marriott Moments
Marriott Bonvoy Points can be used for moments which are culinary, art & lifestyle, sports, and entertainment. The value you get out these depend on how much you value the event or moment.
It's hard to put a cash value for things such as PGA Golf Tours with pros or cooking with a famous chef.
Calculator: Convert Marriott points to dollars
Use the Marriott Points Value Calculator to determine the dollar value of your points when redeemed for free nights. This will give you an idea of how much your points are worth on average.
Redemption | Average Dollar Value |
---|---|
Award nights | CA$0 - CA$0+ |
Marriott Air + Car | CA$0 |
Gift cards (USD) | US$0 - US$0 |
Calculator: Use Marriott points or pay cash?
Use the Marriott Points or Cash Calculator to determine if a redemption is worth it based on the cost in cash and the cost in Marriott Bonvoy points. Try to aim for redemptions that give you 0.9 cents or more per point.
