When you join the American Airlines AAdvantage program, you will be able to start earning AAdvantage Miles and be able to start working your way towards obtaining airline status with them. When you book an eligible-fare ticket for an American Airlines, oneworld Alliance, or partner airline flight, you will earn:

  • Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs)
  • Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs)
  • Elite Qualifying Segments (EQSs)

All of these are used to determine your status within the American Airlines AAdvantage program and not to be confused with the AAdvantage Miles which can be redeemed for free flights and more. The amount of EQDs, EQMs, and EQSs will vary depending on the airline you're flying, the class you're flying in, and the cost of your airline ticket.

Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs)

Elite Qualifying Miles are based on the distance flown. The amount of EQMs you earn are based on the airline you're flying and the class you're flying in. First & Business Class tickets will earn you more EQMs per mile flown. Elite Qualifying Miles benefits those who fly long distances during the year.

Elite Qualifying Segments (EQSs)

Elite Qualifying Segments are calculated as flights between two points. If you fly from City A to City B (non-stop), that's counted as one segment. If you fly from City A, have a layover at City B, and then end your flight at City C, that is a total of two segments because you flew from City A to City B and then from City B to City C. Segments allow those who makes many small trips to obtain status easier since they will not be earning many Elite Qualifying Miles.

Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs)

Elite Qualifying Dollars are based on how much you paid for the base fare of the airline ticket. This is before taxes, fees, and surcharges are added. Regardless of how many EQMs or EQSs you obtain, you'll have to spend a certain amount of money with American Airlines in order to qualify for status.
