Delta Award Flights
The Point Calculator values Delta SkyMiles at around 1.2 cents per mile. This is the low side of what you'll end up with in terms of value when booking your standard Delta flights without any type of research. It's hard to get less than that per mile and relatively easy to get more than that without too much research.
Just searching random flights on the site, I was able to find several SkyMiles domestic redemptions with values as high as 1.5 cents each and international travel redemptions for as high as 1.8 cents. This is fairly easy to do then you use the 5-week search option when searching flights on the Delta website.
When you compare the cost of flights from CMH (Columbus) to LAX (Los Angeles) in the two tables above, all redemptions offer between 1.35 and 1.57 cents per SkyMiles. That's a lot higher than 1.2 cents per point, but again... that's the lowest you should redeem them for when booking award flights.
Since Delta allows you to easily flip between $ USD, Miles, and Miles + Cash, you can easily calculate the value of these redemptions with our Points and Miles Cash Value Calculator without too much hassle.
Flash Sales and Weekend Getaways
Delta has weekend getaway deals to several destinations around the globe for anyone who wants to plan a quick weekend trip. These deals are usually heavily reduced and can save you some serious SkyMiles. Along with weekend getaways, Delta also has consistent Flash Sales. These are random deals that pop up to excellent destinations for great value. Both of these add to the reasons why I keep a stash of SkyMiles handy. If you're loyal to Delta, you will want to make sure you're earning as many SkyMiles as possible so you can be ready for that next deal to a place on your bucket list or to a favorite destination.
You can book award travel with several partnering airlines to destinations around the world. These airlines consist mainly of SkyTeam Alliance partners along with a few other airlines. You can book these airlines directly through delta.com by just searching award flights as normal. If available, partner airlines will pop up in the results. You can book award travel directly though delta.com for:
- Aerolineas Argentinas
- Air France
- China Airlines
- China Eastern
- China Southern
- Garuda Indonesia
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Jet Airways
- KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
- Korean Air
- Mandarin Airlines
- Middle East Airlines
- Saudia Airlines
- Shanghai Airlines
- Tarom Airlines
- Vietnam Airlines
- Virgin Atlantic
- Virgin Australia
- Xiamen Airlines
Award travel can also be booked with Air Europa, Air Tahiti Nui, Czech Airlines, and Kenya Airways, but you will need to contact Delta Reservations to book these.
Miles + Cash
Along with booking award flights with all miles, you can also book using Miles + Cash. This allows you to flexibility to pay for a flight using a combination of miles and dollars. While that's a nice benefit to have, do note that you will not receive Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) for Miles + Cash redemptions. They are treated just like normal award tickets.
If you want to use your miles and still earn progress towards Medallion Status, you can consider the Pay with Miles option explained below.
Pay with Miles
Pay with Miles allows Delta cardholders to use their miles at checkout to reduce the cost of the ticket price. This will give your SkyMiles a value of 1 cent each. Redemptions start at 5,000 Miles for $50 off and goes up in increments of $50. This is a great choice for anyone who needs to shave a few dollars off their airfare, but want to still earn MQSs, MQMs, and MQDs towards Delta Medallion Status.
Delta SkyMiles members are able to upgrade their trip using SkyMiles while booking or after booking a trip. If you're reservation is eligible and you have enough Skymiles, you will see the options you have for upgrading your trip in the Trip Summary section when booking your trip and in the 'Select Seats' for money or miles section when in My Trips for a trip you have already booked.
Redeem For Free Hotel Nights
Skymiles can be used to book Hotels through the Delta SkyMiles Marketplace. Hotels can be searched for by date of travel and destination. Delta will give you a list of hotels to choose from in which you can refine by rating and neighborhood. It will also provide TripAdvisor ratings for each hotel. It will list the room choose for the hotel and then allow you to either purchase the hotel or continue shopping for other travel (such as car rentals). Do note that you must have at least half of the miles required to reserve the room. You can pay cash for the remainder of the balance if you do not have enough SkyMiles. Redeeming SkyMiles for hotel rooms showed an average of around 0.42 cents each.
Redeem For Car Rentals
Skymiles can be used for car rentals through the Delta SkyMiles Marketplace. Car reservations made through the Marketplace can be from an airport or city location. You can also specify on whether or not the rental will be returned to a different location. The listed cost for each rental includes taxes, fees, and unlimited mileage, so you don't have to 'click-to-the-end' to see the final price. You're able to choose from popular car rentals such as Alamo, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, and more. Car rentals will give you SkyMiles an average value of about 0.8 cents. It can be higher or lower depending on how far out you make the reservation and many other factors.
Redeem For Cruises
Skymiles can be used to book cruises through the Delta SkyMiles Marketplace. Delta provides the typical cruise search options including departure month, length of cruise, cruise line, departure ports and more. You can also sort results by Ship and customer ratings. Standard interior rooms ranged between 78,000 to 227,000 depending on the brand and length of cruise. The value of your SkyMiles will heavily depend on the brand.
I found redemptions ranging from 0.4 cents to 0.55 cents per Skymile. While the value isn't the best, being able to book a full cruise starting at 78,000 SkyMiles isn't too shabby for anyone that loves cruising. It can generally be hard to come up with enough points using cruise line rewards so this is a decent alternative.
Redeem For Gift Cards
Delta SkyMiles can be redeemed for a large variety of gift card options. This includes the categories of dining, entertainment, gas, retail, and travel. The value of these gift card vary depending on the retailer and the denomination. Most of these options will give you value between 0.39 and 0.42 cents per SkyMiles which is only a third of their average value. You can get the full list of denominations from the Gift Cards section of Delta's Marketplace. Listed below are some of the gift card options that you can use Delta SkyMiles for.
- Barnes & Noble
- Best Buy
- BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse
- Burger King
- Buy Buy Baby
- California Pizza Kitchen
- Carnival Cruise Lines
- Cracker Barrel

- Sony Playstation Store
- Spafinder Wellness 365
- Steak 'n Shake

Redeem For Merchandise
In addition to gift cards, the SkyMiles Marketplace also allows you to purchase merchandise. This include suitcases, electronics, kitchen appliances, Apple electronics, and more. The prices of these will vary. Most of these redemptions range between 0.5 cents to 0.6 cents, but there are a few higher redemptions for the items that are occasionally on sale or on discount. If you know the cash price of the item you're trying to redeem, you can use the Points and Miles Cash Value Calculator to see the value you can get from your SkyMiles for these types of redemptions.
Redeem For Experiences
Delta SkyMiles members can use their SkyMiles to bid on once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Skymiles Experiences includes experiences such as VIP tickets to the Grammy's, Wine and Food tasting with well-known chefs, suite tickets to sporting events, and more. The value of these experience will depend solely on you.
Transfer SkyMiles To Members
If you're trying to pool SkyMiles or you know someone that is short on Skymiles, you can transfer your SkyMiles to another members account. You can transfer in increments of 1,000, up to 30,000 per transaction. Delta will charge you 1 cent for every point transferred meaning a 1,000 Skymile Transfer will cost you $10. You will also be charge $30 for the transaction itself on top of the 1 cent you're paying per mile.
As you can see, pooling points can be extremely expensive. If I'm flying with my spouse, I will typically use my points to book a one-way flight for both of us to our destination and use my spouse's SkyMiles to book a one-way flight back. That way we're both on the same itinerary for the flight and she can take advantage of the perks I receive for having Medallion status and holding Delta credit cards. If we were to book separately, she would lose out on several perks such as free checked bags.
Delta SkyMiles members can donate their SkyMiles to charitable organizations around the globe. This features big charities such as American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Habit for Humanity and more. You can get the full list on the Delta's Donate Points page.
