25% Airline Bonus

When you redeem Membership Rewards Points for airfare via American Express Travel, you'll receive a 25% airline bonus. These bonus points are issued back in the form of a rebate about 1 month after purchases.

You must have enough point in your account to pay for the original price of the airfare. This redemption bumps up the value of Membership Rewards Points to around 1.3 cents each when you factor in the points credited back to your account.

You can earn a higher rebate of 35% with the Business Platinum Card from American Express.

Pay Over Time

The American Express Business Gold Card offers the ability to carry a balance with interest that you can pay over time. Your account will be given a Pay Over Time Limit in which you can add eligible purchases to.

You can choose to pay for the purchases over time with interest or pay off your full balance each month. Charges not included in the Pay Over Time balance must be paid in full since the American Express Business Gold is a charge card.

Membership Rewards Points earned with the American Express Business Gold Card are worth up to 1.33 cents when redeemed towards airfare via amextravel.com. This is due to the 25% Airline Bonus (rebate) that you'll receive when booking airfare through American Express Travel.

For example, if you were to redeem 30,000 Membership Rewards Points for a $300 flight, you would receive 25% of those points back which is 7,500 points. So you would end up using a total of 22,500 for a $300 flight which gives your points a value of 1.33 cents per point.

If you're looking to maximize the value of Membership Rewards to AMEX's airline and hotel partners which can get you more than 1.3 cents per point when transferring to select partners.

Is The Business Gold Worth The Annual Fee?

The American Express Business Gold Card has an annual fee of $295 (See Rates & Fees). It offers no annual credits, so the card value is going to come from the amount of points you can earn with the card and how much you value the benefits the card offers.

If you're able to run heavy spend through the card's 4X bonus categories and redeem your points for great value using either point transfers or the 25% Airline Bonus rebate, the American Express Business Gold Card can easily be worth the annual fee.

4X Earning Rates

One of the American Express Business Gold Card's main selling points is going to be the 4X categories. If you're able to make full use of at least two of the eligible 4X categories, it's likely that you'll come out ahead.

When I say "make full use", I mean run some serious business spend through the card. I'm talking around at least $2,000 per month across the 4X categories available. This will, at the minimum, earn you around 100,000 Membership Rewards Points during the calendar year which is equal to $1,333 at the value of 1.3 cents per point.

If you're able to make use of the full allotted $150,000 for the 4X categories, you'll end up with a whopping 600,000 Membership Rewards Point which would be worth $7,980 at 1.33 cents each or worth even more when transferred to AMEX's travel partners.

While the 4X categories on the card are tempting for personal use (specifically the gas station and restaurant categories), it will be a lot harder to justify the annual fee if you're running low spend through the card. I'd recommend using the point calculator and comparing this card along side the American Express® Gold Card and American Express® Green Card.

25% Airline Bonus (Rebate)

The other selling point of the American Express Business Gold Card is the 25% airline bonus you'll receive when booking airfare through American Express Travel.

If you have other Membership Rewards credit cards, personal or business, this can be useful in bumping up the value of your Membership Rewards Points if you use them (or plan on using them) to book airfare through American Express.

It's possible to get higher value through point transfers alone, so it will come down to whether or not you think this benefit is worth the annual fee (plus whatever you earn from spending on the card).

Do note that the Business Platinum Card from American Express offers a higher 35% rebate that will give your points a value of 1.54 cents. While the Business Platinum's annual fee is significantly higher than the Business Gold, it offers a numerous amount of credits and benefits that can easily be valued at more than the annual fee.

Some benefits can even be useful for personal use such as the complimentary elite status, annual $400 Dell credit, and extensive lounge access.

Maximize Points With Rakuten

If your business frequently makes purchases online and you're looking to earn more Membership Rewards Points, you should consider using Rakuten Rewards.

Rakuten is an online shopping portal that pays you for shopping online. Basically, they run a website full of affiliate links to different retailers and pay you, the user, some of their commission when you make an online purchase using those links.

The best thing about Rakuten is that they are partnered with American Express Membership Rewards. So instead of earning cash back on your purchases, you can opt in to earn Membership Rewards Points.

So if Rakuten is offering 10% cash back with a certain retailer, you'll be able to earn 10X Membership Rewards Points. Sounds amazing, right? That's because it is.

I've been using Rakuten Rewards as my main online cash back shopping portal since the start of 2017. Once the ability to earn Membership Rewards Points became available, I never looked back.

I use the portal for all of my personal and business online purchases... from buying gifts to booking travel. Since Rakuten uses affiliate links, you're always dropped off on the retailers website. So you're not booking or buying through a third party.

For example, if I click on the Marriott affiliate link on the Rakuten website, it's going to take me to Marriott.com. I can then book my travel as normal and Marriott will notify Rakuten that I have done such. So I still get to earn my Marriott Bonvoy Points from my Marriott booking as well as earn additional Membership Rewards Points based on what Rakuten is offering for Marriott.

You can sign up for Rakuten Rewards for free through our affiliate link and earn bonus Membership Rewards Points (or cash back) on your first purchase. If you're looking to get the most out of the Membership Rewards program, you don't want to ignore this program.

If Rakuten doesn't offer an affiliate link for the retailer you're shopping with, there's many other online shopping portals available. My backup to Rakuten is usually TopCashback or TopCashback.co.uk (to earn British Airways Avios on purchases).
