If you're a grocery shopper, the Everyday Preferred is one of the best Membership Rewards Point earning cards you could have. It earns a great amount of points on grocery and backs it up with a solid return on gas purchases as well. To top it off, it features a 50% point bonus when a certain amount of transaction has been made during the billing statement which is 30% higher than it's no annual fee sibling The Everyday Card. This card is usually paired with AMEX's other point cards such as The Platinum Card and The Blue Business Plus Card.

Bonus Categories

The Everyday Preferred Card has two bonus categories which are U.S. supermarket and U.S. gas station. The U.S. supermarket category has a spend cap of $6,000 per year. After the cap is reached, you will earn at the non-category rate for U.S. supermarket spend for the remainder of the calendar year. The U.S. gas station category does not have a cap. There is no limit to the amount of Membership Rewards Points you can earn with the card overall.

  • 3x U.S. Supermarket
    • Yearly cap of $6,000; 1x point for remainder of year after cap reached.
    • Can earn 4.5x with the 50% point bonus; 1.5x after cap.
  • 2x U.S. Gas Station
    • No cap on this category.
    • Can earn 3x with the 50% point bonus.
  • 1x Non-Category
    • Can earn 1.5x with the 50% point bonus.

The Everyday Preferred is the best option for those who want to maximize their Membership Rewards Points on both U.S. supermarket and U.S. gas station spend. It's also the second best card for earning points on miscellenaous purchases since you can earn 1.5x after the 50% bonus. The best card is the AMEX Blue Business Plus card which earns 2 points per $1 on the first $50,000 in purchases during the calendar year.

Perks & Benefits

The primary benefit on the AMEX Everyday Preferred Card is the 50% bonus points. The card also comes with the standard, but useful, AMEX benefits.

  • 50% Bonus Points
    • Earn a 50% bonus when you make 30 qualifying purchases during the billing period.
    • Important for getting the most out of this card since it has an annual fee.
  • ShopRunner Membership
  • AMEX Offers
  • AMEX Entertainment Access
    • AMEX Preferred Seating, AMEX Presale(s), and AMEX Express Seating
  • Insurance and Purchase Protections

Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The standard AMEX Everyday Preferred signup bonus is 15,000 Membership Rewards Points which is easily worth $150. A welcome bonus as high as 20,000 Membership Rewards Points can sometimes be obtained if you use incognito/private browsing.

Annual Fee

The Everyday Preferred has an annual fee of $95. Whether or not it's worth the annual fee will depend on how much Membership Rewards Points are worth to you. The easy value is 1 cent per point, but it could be a worth a lot more transferring to airline and hotel partners. If you value Membership Rewards Points and spend a great deal on grocery (~$300+ per month), it will be worth the annual fee due the 50% bonus perk.

Authorized User Fee

Another good thing about the Everyday Preferred is that it has no authorized user fee. Thanks to the point bonus and it's ability to earn 1.5x points on non-category spend, this is a great card to add family and friends to in order to always get a good return on Membership Rewards Points.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Everyday Preferred has a transaction fee of 0%. You will not get anything from the bonus categories, but the 50% bonus will make sure you earn at least 1.5x points per dollar for international purchases which is the best you can get from any of the Membership Rewards Point earning cards.
