Adding supplementary cards to the The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express will provide access to a bunch of elite perks for additional users that can be well worth the additional card fee. Benefits includes extensive lounge access, complimentary elite status with two hotel chains, travel and purchase insurances, and so much more.
The Global Lounge Collection
The primary reason to adding additional users to the AMEX Platinum and AMEX Business Platinum cards (in my opinion at least) is for the lounge access each user will inherit. Each additional user will have full access to The American Express Global Lounge Collection. This grants access to:
- AMEX Centurion Lounges & International Lounges (Lounge Website)
- Delta SkyClub Lounges when flying Delta (Lounge Website)
- Priority Pass Lounges (Lounge Website)
- Escape Lounges (Lounge Website)
- Plaza Premium Lounges (Lounge Website)
- Air Space Lounges (Lounge Website)
The amount of value that comes with access to all of these lounges is pretty high. Lounges offer great food ranging from finger foods to full meals, complimentary beverages and alcohol, bathroom and shower facilities, complimentary wifi and business services, and many other perks that can make travel much more relaxing both before flights and between them if you have a layover.
Global Entry and TSA PreCheck Credit
The Global Entry and TSA PreCheck credit is pretty much an industry standard as it's featured on pretty much every premium travel card now-a-days. The good thing about this benefit is that each additional user on the AMEX Platinum and AMEX Business Platinum will have their own individual credit. Each user will be able to use their own supplementary Platinum card to pay for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application and have the full amount reimbursed. Pretty great, right?
If a user already has Global Entry/TSA PreCheck or they don't want access to the program, that user's supplimentary card can still be used to pay for anyone's application fee and the credit will be trigger. So if additional user "A" is not using their card, they can use their card to pay for the application fee of a friend, family, or associate and still get the full amount reimbursed. This is because the credit is not tied to the user. It triggers automatically within a day or two after the fee hits the card.
Additional users of the Platinum and Business Platinum cards will receive complimentary gold elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors hotel loyalty programs as well as be able to book hotels that are part of Fine Hotels & Resorts and The Hotel Collection programs.

Hilton Gold Status
Hilton Honors Gold offers useful benefits when staying at Hilton brand hotels. These benefits include:

AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
AMEX Platinum and Business Platinum additional users will be able to book hotels that are part of Fine Hotels and Resorts through the American Express Travel Portal. Not only will each cardholder earn 5x Membership Rewards Points on these purchases (credited to the primary cardholder of course), but they will also have access to the benefits that come with booking a stay at one of these properties. Benefits include:
- Room Upgrade Upon Arrival (when available)
- Daily Breakfast For Two People
- Guaranteed 4pm Late Check-Out
- Noon Check-In (when available)
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
- Unique Property Amenity (such as Spa or Food/Beverage credit)
When on the American Express Travel Portal, AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings are listed at the top of the page and the listings will generally tell you what the unique property amenity will be.
Do note that this is a benefit specific to personal and business cardholders of Platinum and Centurion credit cards. Other American Express credit cardholders do not have access to this benefit. You can also redeem AMEX Points for Fine Hotels & Resorts for 1 cent each which is a better value than booking hotels through the AMEX Travel Portal that are not part of the program.
The Hotel Collection
The Hotel Collection is open to those with personal or business Gold, Platinum, or Centurion American Express credit cards. It's basically a "lite" version of Fine Hotels & Resorts. When booking a hotel that is part of The Hotel Collection on the American Express Travel Portal, you will receive:
- A $100 Hotel Credit (For Dining, Spa, Resort Activities)
- Room Upgrade At Check-In (when available)
You'll also earn 5 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent if you use your Platinum or Business Platinum card to pay for the stay.
Earning Membership Reward Points
Additional cardholder of the Platinum and Business Platinum cards will be able to earn Membership Rewards Points when using the card to make purchases. Points earned on purchases are credited to the Primary Cardholders Membership Rewards account. Additional users will not receive their own bucket of points even if an additional user holds their own Membership Rewards account as Primary Cardholder on another AMEX credit card.
AMEX Platinum 5x Bonus Categories
Platinum Card and additional users on the Platinum Card will earn 5x Membership Rewards Points on airfare purchased directly with the airline and 5x Membership Rewards Points on airfare & hotels booked through the American Express Travel Portal.
AMEX Business Platinum 5x Bonus Categories
Business Platinum Card and additional users on the Business Platinum will receive 5x on airfare & hotel purchases made through the American Express Travel website. Business Platinum cardholders do not earn 5x on airfare purchased directly with the airline like the personal AMEX Platinum card.
AMEX Business Platinum 0.5x Point Bonus
Business Platinum and authorized users of the Business Platinum will receive an extra 0.5 points per $1 spent when a single eligible purchase of $5,000 or more is made with the card. So a purchase of $5,000 would earn 5,000 Membership Rewards Points plus an additional 2,500 Membership Rewards Points for a total of 7,500. The maximum amount of bonus points you can earn with this perk is 1,000,000 Membership Rewards Points per year. This is not a perk of the personal Platinum card.
The AMEX Platinum Card and AMEX Business Platinum Card comes with credits that are offered every calendar year. These credits are shared among the primary cardholder and any authorized users on the account. Additional cardholders do not receive their own personal annual credits.
$200 Airline Credit
Primary Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders will receive $200 annually towards incidentals made on an airline of their choosing. This choice is given upon receiving the new card. Cardholders will then have the ability to change their selected airline every January. While authorized users will not be able to choose the airline, any accidental charges made on an authorized users card for the chosen airline will be deducted from the $200 airline credit balance. This is balance is shared between all cards tied to the account. Each user does not get their own $200. Do note that gift cards no longer trigger this credit, so you will need to plan ahead on what you plan on using the $200 for. Typical triggers include baggage fees, lounge fees, and in-flight purchases. Seat upgrades after you have already purchased the initial ticket can also sometimes trigger the credit.
AMEX Platinum $200 Uber Credit
The AMEX Platinum Card comes with $200 in annual Uber credit which will only apply to one Uber account. $15 in Uber credit will be deposited into the Uber Cash balance of the Uber account the card is tied to every month with an additional $15 in December for a total of $30. If the same card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the benefit. This means if you have an authorized user that uses Uber more than you, have them add their Platinum card to their Uber account. Do not add it to your account if you will not use the credit. The user that has the Platinum Card tied to their account will also be eligible for Uber VIP. Do note that these Uber Credits can also be used for UberEats to get food delivered to you.
The Business Platinum Card does not have the Uber credit benefit.
AMEX Platinum $100 Saks Fifth Credit
Primary and authorized users of the personal Platinum Card will have access to a total of $100 in Saks Fifth credits annually. This is given out as a $50 statement credit between January and June and another $50 credit between July and December. This credit pulls from the same bucket so everyone does not get their own credit. This credit applies to purchases online or at a Saks Fifth's U.S. location. Be sure that you're using a cash back portal like Rakuten when you're using this credit
The Business Platinum Card does not receive credits towards Saks Fifth.
AMEX Business Platinum $200 Dell Credit
Business Platinum and authorized users of the Business Platinum card will receive a total of $200 in Dell credit during the calendar year. This will be $100 in statement credit between January and June and $100 in statement credits between July and December. This credit is shared amongst all accounts. Authorized user will not get their own personal credit. This applies to purchases made directly with online at Dell.com or directly with Dell within the United States.
The personal Platinum Card does not receive credits towards Dell purchases.
Other Shared Perks
There are a lot of additional benefits that comes with both the Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card outside of what I've already went over that additional cardholder will have access to. This includes, but is not limited to:
- AMEX Offers
- Platinum Concierge Services
- Membership Rewards Pay With Points
- No Preset Spending Limit (NPSL)
- Roadside Assistance
- Return Protection
- Extended Warranty
- Purchase Protection
- Hertz, Avis, and National Rental Car Status
- AMEX Presale Tickets and AMEX Express Seating
- Cruise Privileges Program
- Delta Private Jets Discount
Additional Card Fees
So now that you're aware of the benefits, let's dive into the fees. The cost to add supplimentary cards to the Platinum and Business Platinum cards is quite expensive. When deciding to add additional cards, you'll want to think about the cash cost of each benefit by itself and how often the additional user will be using the benefits. This is the most important thing to consider.
AMEX Platinum Additional Card Fee
Adding additional cards to the AMEX Platinum Card will cost you $175 per year for the first three supplimentary cards and $175 per year for each additional supplimentary card after that.
So this means that you can add up to three friends or family members for a total of $175 per year. Not per person, but per year which comes out to being around $59 each. This means each user will receive access to the perks and benefits listed in the sections above. Just to recap, here's some of the benefits each user will receive when having their own AMEX Platinum Card:
- $100 Global Entry or $85 TSA PreCheck Credit
- Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status
- Hilton Honors Gold Elite Status
- Access To The Lounge Collection (Centurion, Delta SkyClubs, Priority Pass, etc.)
- AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
- The Hotel Collection
- 5x Earnings On Airfare & AMEX Travel Airfare/Hotels
- Travel & Purchase Protections
- Car Rental Benefits
- Platinum Concierge
- AMEX Offers
That list of benefits is worth way more than $59. Even if you were to add a 4th supplimentary card for a total of $175 per year, I still think that it would be worth it if that user uses the benefits offered on the card.
AMEX Business Platinum Additional Card Fee
Adding additional cards to the AMEX Business Platinum Card will cost you $300 per year for each supplimentary card you add. This is significantly higher than the price of adding additional users to the personal Platinum Card and you're receiving close to the same benefits. Are the benefits offered on each supplimentary Business Platinum card worth more than $300? That's an easy yes if they use the benefits.
If you're trying to decide between the AMEX Platinum and AMEX Business Platinum, remember that the AMEX Business Platinum offers a 35% rebate on points used for airfare on the AMEX Travel Portal. This boost the value of AMEX Points to 1.538 cents each without the need of transferring AMEX points to partners. This is something to heavily consider when deciding between both.
I find great value in both my AMEX Platinum and AMEX Business Platinum cards. With the personal Platinum Card I'm able to get a great return on airfare purchases and make sure that my big purchases are protected with the great Purchase Protection the card offers. I've also added my wife, mom, and sister as authorized users (dad doesn't fly) and have been able to frequently visit lounges several times per year which is easily worth the additional $175 annual fee. My wife and family have also been able to take advantage of perks such as the complimentary hotel elite status when traveling alone and save money with AMEX Offers.
The AMEX Business Card is my go to for when I want to keep business purchases and travel separate from my personal spend. It also gives my Membership Rewards a value of 1.538 cents per point thanks to the 35% rebate it offers on booking airfare through the American Express Travel Portal. This gives me a great alternative option over transferring points to airline and hotel partners.
