Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The standard AMEX Platinum sign up bonuses hovers around 60,000 to 75,000 Membership Rewards Points which is usually earned after spending $5,000 in purchases on the card within the first 3 months.

This is worth at least an easy $600 when redeemed directly with American Express, but it could be worth $1,000 or more transferred to AMEX's airline and hotel partners and redeemed for good value.

AMEX occasionally offers a promotional 100,000-point sign up bonus. This is triggered randomly when landing on the application page, but can also sometimes be triggered by using incognito/private browsing or by using a referral link. If you're not in an immediate rush to pick up the AMEX Platinum, I recommend trying to aim for the 75,000- or 100,000-point sign up bonus since AMEX signup bonuses are typically once per lifetime.

Fees

Annual Fee

The AMEX Platinum Card annual fee is $550 which seems to be the norm for premium/luxury travel cards at the moment. While this seems like a lot to pay for a credit card, the extensive list of perks and benefits as well as the 5x earning on airfare and AMEX travel airfare/hotel purchases can easily make this card worth the fee. If you enjoy using lounges (especially if you fly Delta Airlines), this card will benefit you.

Authorized User Fee

The AMEX Platinum Card authorized user fee is $175 for up to 3 additional Platinum cards and $175 for each additional Platinum card after the first 3. So if you add one additional user, I would recommend finding at least 2 more to add for a total of three additional users since it's going to cost $175 regardless.

What sets the Platinum and Business Platinum apart from the competition is that each authorized user will also get to partake in the majority of the perks and benefits this card offers making this authorized user fee worth paying for those who also frequently travel!

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Platinum Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee. This means you can use it overseas without any worry of losing rewards. Point wise, the Platinum Card will not make you any real rewards when it comes to using it overseas. If you're looking to earn AMEX Points internationally, you'll want to consider pairing this card with the AMEX Gold (restaurant purchases) or AMEX Green (travel & transit purchases).

You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category.
