Credit Card Currency

Cash back earned with American Express can be applied to the statement, used to purchase gift cards, or used to shop in the American Express website for name brand merchandise. You must have at least $25 in cash rewards to start redeeming your cash back.

Membership Rewards Points can easily be redeemed on the American Express website for 1 cent or less. The value of 1 cent per point can be earned redeeming points for airfare through the American Express Travel Portal and for a select amount of gift cards. The real value of Membership Rewards Points will come from transferring them their 15+ partners which consist of airlines and hotels. Most airline miles are already worth 1.2+ cents each so if you take the time to price out some trips or research the sweet spots with AMEX's airline partners, these points will typically take you farther than cash back when redeemed for travel.
