Venture vs Chase Sapphire Reserve - Calculator & Benefits
Rewards Comparison Calculator
Review the benefits, calculate rewards based on spend, and compare the cash value of the Capital One Venture vs the Chase Sapphire Reserve side by side.
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is popular travel credit card offered by Capital One. It earns 2X miles across all purchases with miles being worth 1 cent each when redeemed towards travel. These miles can also be transferred to Capital One's airline and hotel partners.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a luxury travel card and is one of the best travel credit cards in terms of offering a fantastic return on spending. It earns 3X to 5X points across various travel & dining purchases and 1X on all other purchases with points being worth 1.5 cents each when redeemed towards travel via Chase Ultimate Rewards. Points can also be transferred to Chase's airline and hotel partners for a chance at even more value.
The value that you will get out of the rewards earned with either card will vary depending on how you plan on redeeming them. The table below lists the average value you can obtain from redeeming Venture Miles and Ultimate Rewards Points earned with the Venture Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Point Transfers To Partners
If you want to maximize the value of Venture Miles and Ultimate Rewards Points, you'll want to transfer your rewards to airline and hotel partners.
Venture Miles can be transferred to 17 travel partners and Ultimate Rewards Points can be transferred to 13 travel partners.
The table below lists the side by side comparison of Capital One travel partners vs Chase travel partners and the transfer ratio of each.
Airline Miles
Airline Miles have an average value of 1.2 to 1.5 cents per mile and have the chance to be worth significantly more depending on the redemption.
With Venture Miles, the most you'll get out of redeeming your rewards directly with Capital One is 1 cent per point towards travel redemptions. So this is hands down the best option for maximizing the Venture Rewards program as it will be hard to get that low of a value with their frequent flyer partners.
For Ultimate Rewards, you have the option of redeeming points for 1.5 cents each through Chase Ultimate Rewards or transferring your points to partners for solid value. Depending on the partner and redemption, transferring your points to frequent flyer programs could give you more than 1.5 cents in value or less than 1.5 cents in value.
With Chase, you'll have to figure out which redemption option is best for you at the time of booking your flight.
Hotel Rewards Points
Both Capital One and Chase feature a small handful of hotel partners that you can transfer your rewards to.
For Capital One, you can transfer points to Accor Live Limitless, Choice Privileges, and Wyndham Rewards.
Out of these partners, Accor is the easiest to get value out of as your Venture Miles will be worth 1 pence (€0.01) each on average which is typically more than 1 cent ($0.01). Getting more than 1 cent out of Choice and Wyndham is possible, but will require some research to find the sweet spots.
For Chase there's only one answer... Hyatt. Transferring your Ultimate Rewards Points to the World of Hyatt program is an easy way to get 2 cents or more in value per point. Marriott is also a solid option that can give you more than 1 cent in value with a little research.
Travel Redemptions
Venture Miles can be redeemed for 1 cent each towards travel purchases made through Capital One Travel or towards travel charged towards the card.
This gives you a bunch of flexibility and allows you to book travel in several different ways:
Redeem miles to book travel through Capital One directly
Pay for your Capital One Travel with your Venture Card and then use your miles to cover the travel charge
Book your travel direct and then use your miles to cover the travel charge
Use your miles towards small travel purchases such as tolls, parking fees, and more and use your miles to cover the charges
Ultimate Rewards Points earned with the Chase Sapphire Reserve can be redeemed for 1.5 cents per point for travel purchases made through Chase Ultimate Rewards. You will not get this value when booking or paying any other kind of travel with your card (e.g. tolls, parking, etc).
If you wanted to use your Ultimate Rewards Points towards other travel charges, you would need to redeem your points as a statement credit or as cash back and then use that to pay off the charge. You'll still get the same value as Venture Miles, but Capital One just makes the process easier, which is what they're best known for.
Cash Back & Statement Credits
If you're going for cash-like redemptions such as cash back, statement credits (non-travel), and gift cards, you'll want to go with earning Ultimate Rewards Points since it offers more value for these kind of redemptions.
Ultimate Rewards Points can be redeemed for 1 cent per point towards cash back, statement credits, and gift cards whereas you'll only get 1 cent per point when using Venture Miles towards travel and lower than that for most other redemptions.
Comparing Earning Rates
The Venture Card earns Venture Miles at a flat rate across all purchases while the Chase Sapphire Reserve features bonus categories that focus on travel and dining.
Venture vs Chase Sapphire Reserve Earning Rates
Venture Card
2 Venture Miles per $1 spent on all purchases
Chase Sapphire Reserve
10 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on the Chase Dining
10 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on hotel and car rental purchases made through Chase Ultimate Rewards
5 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on airfare purchases made through Chase Ultimate Rewards
3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on other travel and dining
1 Ultimate Rewards Point per $1 spent on everything else
The Chase Sapphire Reserve excels when it comes to earning rewards on travel and dining purchases, especially if you're doing such through Chase. If you're looking to compete with those kind of earnings, you'll want to consider the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card which grants bonus points on travel purchased directly through Capital One Travel.
If you're spending heavy outside of travel and dining, the Capital One Venture Card will shine as it earns a flat 2X across all purchases whereas you'll only earn 1X on non-travel and -dining purchases with the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
If you're transferring points to a airline partner that both programs feature (e.g. British Airways Avios, Singapore KrisFlyer), it's possible that having both cards could benefit you when it comes to maximizing your rewards for transfers.
Comparing Benefits
