Best Credit Cards For IHG Points

IHG Points can be earned using IHG credit cards and credit cards offered by transfer partners. You can use this tool to get a list of the best credit cards for earning IHG Points based on how much you spend across various categories.

U.S. IHG Credit Card Calculators

IHG offers two rewards credit cards with Chase Bank. Both cards offer bonus points on IHG properties, grocery, gas, and restaurant purchases. The also both provide IHG elite status and access to the 4th night free perk for award bookings. The higher-fee IHG Premier Card offers a few extra benefits such as a higher earning on IHG spend and a discount on buying points.

Redeeming Rewards & Cash Value

IHG Points will have the best value when redeemed for free nights at IHG brand hotels. Along with free nights, you can also use your IHG Points for gift cards, digital rewards, and online shopping through the IHG Rewards Catalog.

Transfer Partners

IHG Rewards Points can be transferred to more than 35 different airline partners. This includes popular airlines such as American, Delta, United, and Jetblue. This is a great way to top off your favorite frequent flyer program in the case that you're a few miles short of a redemption.

You can also transfer rewards directly to your IHG Rewards Club account. This is best done using the Ultimate Rewards program, but there are several other options available as well if you're trying to build up your IHG Points balance.

Earning Rewards

IHG Points are primarily earned staying at IHG brand hotels. You'll earn a base of 10 IHG Points per $1 USD spent and earn additional points based on your IHG Rewards Club Elite status.

IHG Dining/Food Partners

If you love food, then earning IHG Points is for you. You can earn IHG Points dining out at your favorite restaurants using the IHG Rewards Club Dining Program, ordering food delivery with GrubHub, or making dining reservations with OpenTable.

Do note that these options may not be available for those not based in the United States.

IHG and Hertz

You can earn IHG Points when renting cars with Hertz. This is an easy way to earn up to 1,500 IHG Points. You'll need to book your rental through the IHG-Hertz Portal in order to earn your points.

Buying Rewards

If transferring points to your IHG Rewards Club account isn't an option, the next choice is to buy IHG Points. At the standard rate, IHG Points will cost you between 1 and 1.35 cents depending on how many you buy. You'll get the best value of 1 cent each when you buy at least 26,000 IHG Points. You can buy as little as 1,000 IHG Points for $13.50 or as many as 150,000 Points for $1,500.

If you have the IHG Premier (U.S.) or IHG Traveler (U.S.) credit cards, you'll receive 20% off which will be reflected automatically when buying points. Remember that you will not receive the discount of the points are already on sale.

Buying IHG Points
IHG Points Cost
Cost Per Point
1,000 - 10,000 Points 1.35 Cents
11,000 - 25,000 Points 1.15 Cents

Premier/Traveler Cardholders

IHG Points are on sale several times per year. This allows you to buy points at a reduced cost which is great if you need to top off your account or you need to buy a decent amount of points for your next redemption. These promotions have had IHG Points as cheap as 0.5 cents each which is great considering you can typically get higher than that in value, especially when combined with the 4th night free benefit offered on IHG's U.S.-based cards.

IHG & Cash Back Portals

If you want to earn cash back on your IHG bookings (and I know you do!), I recommend using a cash back portal like TopCashback. The cash back you earn from booking through cash back portals is in addition to the IHG Points you would normally receiveing making this an easy way to double or triple dip on rewards.

Cash back portals take you to ihg.com to book your stay, so you'll still be booking direct!

If you were to book an IHG Hotel through a cash back portal, you would earn:

  • Cash back from the portal.
  • IHG Points from the hotel booking.
  • Rewards with the credit card you used to make the hotel booking.

I've made a few thousand over the years using cash back portals for travel and online shopping. I highly recommend that you use them anytime you can when buying online.
