It's a great option if you normally spend a good deal of money at Macy's, especially if you spend at least $500 a year which will grant you Gold status. This is where the membership starts to get more valuable as you'll earn 3% back on Macy's purchases and get free shipping with no minimum purchase amount.
Macy's American Express Card
The Macy's American Express Card is a rewards credit card that not only grants you access to the full Star Rewards program, but also allows you to earn Macy's Star Points on purchases outside of Macy's.
With the Macy's AMEX, you'll earn 3% back in rewards at restaurants (including food delivery), 2% back in rewards at gas stations & supermarkets, and 1% back in rewards everywhere else.
While the ability to earn Macy's Rewards points across all purchases is great, there are credit cards that can earn you an equal or higher return on your spend with rewards that can be used for more than just Macy's.
For example, the Blue Cash Preferred from American Express earns 6% back on the first $6,000 in U.S. supermarket spend per year. If you were to spend $500 a month at U.S. supermarkets with the Macy's AMEX Card, you would earn $180 in Star Rewards whereas the Blue Cash Preferred would earn you $360 in cash back that can be redeemed towards just about anything, including Macy's purchases.

Once you earn 1,000 Star Rewards points, they will be automatically redeemed for $10 in Star Money. Star Money is worth face value, so $10 in Star Money is equal to $10 in cash value in-store or online with Macy's.

Once converted to Star Money, you will have 30 calendar days from issuance to use it before it expires.
