For example, if you were to redeem 30,000 Membership Rewards Points for a $300 flight, you would receive 35% of those points back which is 10,500 points. So you would end up using a total of 19,500 for a $300 flight which gives your points a value of 1.538 cents per point.
It's possible to get even higher value when you transfer your points to AMEX's travel partners and redeem them for airfare and hotel stays.
Business Platinum Points Transfer
Points earned with the American Express Business Platinum Card can be transferred to 20 travel partners, with most partners being at a 1:1 ratio.
My Business Platinum Hands-On Review
When I originally went for the Business Platinum Card back in late 2016, I picked it up because of the 100,000 Bonus Point Sign Up Bonus and the then 50% Airline Bonus which made Membership Rewards Points worth a whopping 2 cents each. This was a bonus easily worth $2,000 towards airfare with no effort.
Fast forward to today and I'm still a cardholder.
While the Airline Bonus has been toned down to 35%, the card has undergone many changes since 2016 including the addition of bonus categories, annual credits, and card benefits. The annual fee of the card has also been kicked up more than once as well.
I had actually planned on closing this card in 2019 as I was really only using it for the 35% rebate and I was able to make up for the annual fee with the $200 Airline Incidental Credit and the savings I got using AMEX offers.
But then... AMEX updated the card by adding $200 in annual Dell credits that were actually of some use to me. I was able to easily use the credit on Dell.com to pick up gift cards that I would actually be able to use, that would save me money.
Then the pandemic started and American Express started handing out credits left and right across most of their consumer and business cards during most of 2020 and early 2021. Closing an AMEX card during those times would have been silly.
Then... AMEX updated the card again in October 2021 and added even more credits to the card as well as additional bonus categories.
Long story short, I'm still holding onto the card, but now it takes no effort for me to squeeze value out of the card as they've added credits that I actually can use. And not credits that I'm using because they're on the card and I'm forced to use them to get proper value out of the card.
The $400 in Dell Credits are super useful, I have CLEAR membership ($179 credit), I have Adobe Creative membership ($150 credit), and I have a wireless phone ($120 credit). That's $849 in credits that I can use without going out of my way to spend extra money.
That's also more than the annual fee of the card and it doesn't even include the long list of benefits this card has in which I may use from time to time.
So I'll continue to hold on to this card for the 35% Airline Bonus and now... the annual credits.
Is the Business Platinum Worth The Annual Fee?
The Business Platinum Card can be worth the fee if you can make use of the credits and benefits that the card offers. In my opinion, it's one of the easiest Membership Rewards credit cards to squeeze value out of.
AMEX Business Platinum Card Travel Benefits
The Business Platinum Card is loaded to the brim with travel benefits ranging including extensive lounge access, complimentary elite status with hotels and car retail agencies, discounts on cruises, flights, and private jets, special benefits when booking hotels through Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, plus much more.
How much you peg these benefits depends on how useful they are to you, but the reality is that the cash value of these travel benefits add up to be way more than the annual fee of the card before you even factor in annual credits, card spending, the 35% airline rebate, and all the other benefits.
This especially holds true if you don't have the consumer Platinum Card which offers many overlapping benefits.
AMEX Business Platinum Card Annual Credits
The Business Platinum Card offers over $1,400 in annual credits and just being able to use half of these credits will make up for the annual fee of the card. Outside of the $200 Airline Incidental Credit which requires some (unnecessary) hoops to jump through, these credit are relatively easy to use if you deal with the companies/services offering them.
AMEX Business Platinum 5X Categories
If you or your business plan on frequently booking flights and hotels (pre-paid) through American Express Travel, the 5X earnings on these categories will quickly add up. You're looking at a 7.69% return on your purchases through the portal if you plan on redeeming your points using the 35% rebate.
The 1.5X categories can help you build up points too, but you can easily earn more than that using the Blue Business Plus Card from American Express on the first $50,000 in purchases per year (then 1X).
I recommend using the Business Platinum Point Calculator to see how much value you can get out of the card overall.
Business Platinum Points Calculator
Use the Business Platinum Points Calculator to determine how many AMEX Points you can earn based on the monthly or yearly spending amounts you enter.
You can calculate the cash value of the Business Platinum alongside up to two other credit cards from any issuer.
Any spend entered into the primary card column (the first column) will carry over to all credit card calculators on the site. This means there's no need to re-enter spend when jumping to other credit card pages on the site.
Maximize Points With Rakuten
If your business frequently makes purchases online and you're looking to earn more Membership Rewards Points, you should consider using Rakuten Rewards.
Rakuten is an online shopping portal that pays you for shopping online. Basically, they run a website full of affiliate links to different retailers and pay you, the user, some of their commission when you make an online purchase using those links.
The best thing about Rakuten is that they are partnered with American Express Membership Rewards. So instead of earning cash back on your purchases, you can opt in to earn Membership Rewards Points.
So if Rakuten is offering 10% cash back with a certain retailer, you'll be able to earn 10X Membership Rewards Points. Sounds amazing, right? That's because it is.
I've been using Rakuten Rewards as my main online cash back shopping portal since the start of 2017. Once the ability to earn Membership Rewards Points became available, I never looked back.
I use the portal for all of my personal and business online purchases... from buying gifts to booking travel. Since Rakuten uses affiliate links, you're always dropped off on the retailers website. So you're not booking or buying through a third party.
For example, if I click on the Marriott affiliate link on the Rakuten website, it's going to take me to Marriott.com. I can then book my travel as normal and Marriott will notify Rakuten that I have done such. So I still get to earn my Marriott Bonvoy Points from my Marriott booking as well as earn additional Membership Rewards Points based on what Rakuten is offering for Marriott.
You can sign up for Rakuten Rewards for free through our affiliate link and earn bonus Membership Rewards Points (or cash back) on your first purchase. If you're looking to get the most out of the Membership Rewards program, you don't want to ignore this program.
If Rakuten doesn't offer an affiliate link for the retailer you're shopping with, there's many other online shopping portals available. My backup to Rakuten is usually TopCashback or TopCashback.co.uk (to earn British Airways Avios on purchases).
Check out our reviews on all of the popular online shopping portals.
