Calculate total Ultimate Rewards Points and the cash value of the Chase Sapphire Reserve based on your monthly/yearly spend, card benefits, and annual fee. Compare the results side by side any credit card including the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the top travel cards on the market. It offers and excellent return on both travel and dining purchases as well as offer superb travel & insurance benefits. The card earns Ultimate Rewards Points which are worth an easy 1.5 cents each, but can be worth as much as 2 cents or more when transferred to Chase's travel partners. Read on to learn more about the great benefits of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and calculate how many points you can earn based on your spend.

Bonus Categories

The Chase Sapphire Reserve features three bonus categories which are travel, dining, and Lyft purchases. There is no limit to the amount of bonus Ultimate Rewards Points you can earn spending in these categories and no limit to the amount of Ultimate Rewards Points you can earn with the card in general.

  • 10x Lyft
    • This is the best earnings you can earn on Lyft spend. I highly recommend using this card if you spend with the particular rideshare service.
    • All other Chase Ultimate Rewards and cash back credit cards earn either 5x points or 5% cash back.
  • 3x Travel
    • Chase considers travel to be:
      • Airlines
      • Hotels, Motels, Timeshares
      • Car Rental Agencies, Taxis, Buses, Trains, Limousines
      • Cruise Lines
      • Travel Agencies, Travel Sites
      • Ferries, Toll Bridges, Highways
      • Parking Lots, Garages
      • Anything else that codes as travel
  • 3x Dining
    • Chase considers the following to be dining:
      • Restaurants
      • Fast Food
      • Fine Dining
      • Diners
      • Coffee Shops (i.e. Starbucks)
      • Vending Machines
      • Bars
      • Cafés
      • Food Delivery Services
  • 1x Non-Category

The 50% boost this card receives on travel redemptions made through the Chase Travel Portal means you can earn a minimum 4.5% return across both travel and dining spend and a whopping 15% minimum on Lyft rideshare spend. You have the chance to earn a higher return by transferring your points to Chase's transfer partners.

Chase Freedom Categories
Earn 5% cash back on quarterly rotating categories and exchange it for 5x Ultimate Rewards Points.

One important thing to note is that you can exchange cash back earned with Chase's cash back credit cards into Ultimate Rewards Points at a 1:1 ratio as long as you have at least one Ultimate Rewards Card attached to the same account. This opens up several additional cards, all with no annual fee, that you can use to earn additional points. While I recommend pickup most of the Chase's cash back cards, you'll want to heavily consider picking up the Chase Freedom Unlimited or Chase Ink Business Unlimited for your non-category/miscellaneous spend since you'll earn a slightly higher return of 1.5x points.

If you don't typically use DoorDash or Lyft, you can still get great value out of the Chase Sapphire Reserve if you frequently spend across travel and dining. Pairing this card with Chase's cash back credit cards will also up the value since you'll be able to exchange cash back into Ultimate Rewards Points worth up to an easy 1.5 cents each.

Useful Calculators: There's lots of credit cards that offer points across the travel and dining categories. You can use the following calculators to find out which cards are best based on your spend:

Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has a standard sign up bonus of 50,000 Ultimate Rewards Points after spending $4,000 on the card within the first 3 months of account opening. This is worth $750 in travel purchased through the Chase Travel Portal. You can also transfer Chase Points to airline and hotel partners for an easy 50,000 airline miles or hotel points which can possibility give you more than $750 in value.

Annual Fee

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has an annual fee of $550 per year which is around the normal now for premium/luxury travel cards. Since the Chase Sapphire Reserve has an annual travel credit of $300, you're looking at a total of $250 per year.

If you use Lyft and/or DoorDash, there should be no question in the amount of value you can pull from this card. The Lyft Pink membership, superb 10x earnings on Lyft spend, DoorDash membership, and $60 in annual DoorDash benefits has a greater cash value than $250.

If you don't use Lyft and DoorDash, you'll need to run some decent spend through the card and it will really depend on how much you value Ultimate Rewards Points and the cash value you get out of the Priority Pass and the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck benefits. In most cases, the Chase Sapphire Reserve will still be the better option than the Chase Sapphire Preferred if you typically redeem points through the Chase Travel Portal for the extra point boost. If you typically transfer Chase Points to partners, the Chase Sapphire Preferred could be a better option depending on how much you spend across the bonus categories.

Authorized User Fee

The Chase Sapphire Reserve authorized user fee is $75 for each additional user. While authorized users of the Chase Sapphire Reserve will not receive as many benefits as authorized users on the American Express Platinum and Business Platinum, the ability to earn more Ultimate Rewards Points is always a plus. I recommend adding friends and family as authorizes users only if they can spend enough to earn the points to cover the fee.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has a 0% foreign transaction fee which makes it a superb option for anyone looking to earn Ultimate Rewards Points on spending and travel outside of the United States. This is one of the top cards you'll want in your wallet if you plan on traveling internationally.
