Marriott Bonvoy Points will cost you 1.25 cents per point at the standard rate. This means that every 1,000 points you buy would cost you $12.50.

How many Marriott points can you buy?

You can buy as little as 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points for $12.50 and as many as 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points for $1,250. Points can be purchased in 1,000-point increments, starting at 1,000 points.

You can buy or receive as a gift up to a combined maximum of 100,000 points per calendar year. This does not include the points that you can buy when booking reservations and topping off your account.

When you're short on points while booking a hotel stay, you can purchase up to an additional 100,000 points going that route.

There are two ways that you can save when it comes to buying Marriott Bonvoy Points: Promotions and TopCashback.

Promotions

TopCashback

Another way to put money back into your pocket is through TopCashback. TopCashback is an online cash back portal that pays you a small portion of the money they make when you click on a partner affiliate link on their website.

Are buying Marriott points worth it?

If you're trying to decide on if buying points is worth it, it will depend on how many you're buying and what you're redeeming them for.

Topping off your account

If you're buying a few thousand points to top off your account, it will usually always be worth it to buy points assuming you have a solid redemption lined up.

For example, if you have 118,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points and you're 2,000 points away from that 5-day stay at that hotel you've been eyeing, then go ahead and buy those points as it's the fastest way to up your balance.

Waiting until charges post to your Marriott credit cards or trying to earn points through other means could take awhile. It's possible that the award cost could rise and thus end up costing you more points.

Buying large amounts of points

Buying large amounts of points is generally frowned upon, but there are times in which going this route can benefit you more than paying cash. As long as you're redeeming your points for more than what you paid for them AND there's a large enough margin in savings, buying points can be worth it.

Typically, buying large amount of points should only be done during Marriott's Buy Points promotions.

It's a lot easier to get value out of buying points for 0.8 to 0.9 cents than it is to buy points at the standard rate of 1.25 cents. This is because it's easy to find Marriott redemptions that offer 1 to 1.25 cents in value whereas getting more value than that gets significantly harder.

Fifth Night Free

This is where buying points offers the most value, especially when they're on sale. If you have elite status with Marriott, you can book a 5-night consecutive award stay for the cost of 4 nights.

You can obtain Marriott's lowest status of Silver with any Marriott credit card including the no-annual fee Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card. And you don't need to use any Marriott credit card to pay—it just has to be tied to your account.

This bumps up the value of your points as you'll be saving the cost of a full night. For example, Fairfield Inn & Suite Clearwater is a great hotel (that I've stayed in) that is not far from Clearwater Beach, Florida.

The cost for a 5-night stay is 68,500 points and the cost per night is $168 after tax. So a full stay would cost you either 68,500 points or $840.

This redemption would give your points a value of 1.22 cents each meaning that buying points for the full cost of the redemption would be bad value.

Now if points were on sale, lets say 0.85 cents each, you could buy 69,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points (must be 1,000-point increments) for $582.25. This is significantly lower than paying $840.

"What about the points you would have earned paying cash?"

A Marriott Titanium member using any 6X-point earning Marriott Bonvoy credit card would earn the max of 23.5 points per $1 spent on the booking. So you would earn roughly 13,600 points.

At an average value of 0.7 cents per point, you're looking at $95 worth of points compared to $258 in savings from buying points. Even if you valued Marriott Bonvoy Points at a higher 1 cent in value, you'd still save buying points.
