Point Values for Shop with Points redemptions
Program | Value (in cents) |
---|---|
Amazon Rewards Points | 1 |
Capital One Rewards | 1 |
Discover Miles | 1 |
Chase Ultimate Rewards | 0.8 |
Citi ThankYou Rewards | 0.8 |
American Express Membership Rewards | 0.7 |
Hilton Honors | 0.2 |
Most of the featured programs earn rewards that have a cash value of 1 cent or higher (with a few exceptions), so why would you use your rewards to shop on Amazon.com? Promotions!
During the year, Amazon offers discounts for using rewards points towards your purchases on Amazon.com. These promotions typically have no minimum redemption amount which means you can redeem 1 point or mile and still give the full discount.
For example, Amazon might offer $20 off of a $50 purchase if you use Ultimate Rewards Points. You can use 1 Ultimate Rewards Point to get $20 off and pay the rest with your credit card.
This example would technically give your 1 point/mile a redemption value of $20 which is far beyond anything you'll ever get booking travel or anything else.
Outside of promotions, redeeming your rewards will generally be bad value for most of the eligible travel rewards programs featured.
Using AMEX points with Amazon
Membership Rewards Points are worth 0.7 cents each when used at checkout on Amazon.com. This means that 1,000 AMEX Points is equal to $7 in value with Amazon.
This isn't the best use of Membership Rewards Points as they can be worth as much as 2 cents each when redeemed for travel, but it can be a solid option when Amazon offers discounts for using points at checkout.
Redemption | Average Dollar Value |
---|---|
Amazon Shop with Points Value | $0 |
Using Chase points with Amazon
Ultimate Rewards Points can be redeemed for 0.8 cents each at checkout on Amazon.com. This means that 1,000 Chase Points is equal to $8 in value with Amazon.
Ultimate Rewards Points can be worth as much as 2.1 cents each when redeemed with travel partners. You can also easily redeem Chase Points for 1 cent each for cash back, so using them for Amazon will give you low value.
As with AMEX, redeeming Chase Points with Amazon.com only makes sense when Amazon is offering a discount for redeeming points towards purchases.

Using Capital One miles with Amazon
Capital One Rewards can be redeemed on Amazon.com. Rewards earned with Capital One cash back credit cards are worth face value while Capital One Venture Miles & Spark Miles will be worth 1 cent each.
Capital One Miles have an average value of 1 cent each when redeemed towards travel through Capital One, so using them on Amazon.com is not a bad option. Like most other flexible rewards programs, transferring Capital One Miles to partners will give you the chance to get as much as 2 cents per mile.

Using Citi Points with Amazon
Citi ThankYou Points can be redeemed for 0.8 cents each at checkout on Amazon.com. This means that 1,000 Citi Points is equal to $8 in cash value with Amazon.
Citi Points have an average value of 1 cent each, so redeeming them on Amazon.com is not too big of a loss, but they can be transferred to airline and hotel partners for up to 2 cents in value so you'll likely want to go that route if you want maximum value.
As with other programs, I only recommend using Citi Points with Amazon.com during promotions.

Using Hilton Honors points with Amazon
Hilton Honors Points can be redeemed for 0.2 cents each towards purchases on Amazon.com. This means that 1,000 Hilton Honors Points will have a value of $2 using Shop with Points.
