Hertz is an American car rental company that is based out of Estero, Florida. They have over 10,000 locations across more than 150 countries. Hertz is the second largest US car rental company (by sales, locations, and fleet size) and they own both Dollar Rent A Car and Thrifty Car Rental.
Hertz Gold Rewards Plus is the loyalty program of Hertz. Joining the program allows you to earn Hertz Points which can be redeemed for free rentals. As you move up in status, you'll also receive other benefits including complimentary car upgrades, free trials for CLEAR Membership, and other exclusive perks and rewards. If you plan on renting directly with Hertz, I recommend signing up for their rewards program.
How To Earn Hertz Points
Hertz Points are earned by booking car rentals directly with Hertz via hertz.com, the Hertz mobile app, or over the phone using the Hertz reservations line. Booking your rental through a third party such as Expedia.com or CarRentals.com will typically not earn you Hertz Points.
When you book your rental directly with Hertz, you will earn a certain amount of Hertz Points per $1 spent based on your Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Membership Level. Hertz Gold Members will earn 1 point per $1, Hertz Five Star members will earn 1.25 points per $1, and Hertz President's Circle members will earn 1.5 points per $1. While the bonuses don't seem all that grand, Hertz points have very high value which means the savings earned from these boosts will add up fast.
Hertz Points Earning Calculator
Use the Hertz Points Earning Calculator to calculaate how many Hertz Points you can earn per $1 spent based on your Hertz Membership Level. You can enter any amount of Hertz Points in the calculator.
Hertz Points Value & Redemptions
Hertz Points can be redeemed for free rentals with Hertz which gives your points a wide range of 2.5 to 5 cents in value. Rentals with Hertz are split up into Standard Rewards and AnyDay Rewards.
Hertz Standard & AnyDay Rewards
Hertz Standard Rewards starts at 750 Hertz Points per day. With Standard Rewards, you can book any days at a Hertz location that is not a blackout date which are considered to be Hertz "peak dates".
Hertz AnyDay Rewards starts at 1,500 Hertz Points per day. AnyDay Rewards can be booked during "peak dates" with Hertz meaning no blackout dates will apply. Peak dates are by location. Hertz has a Find AnyDay Rewards Dates tool that can be used to see the Peak Dates for any given Hertz location.
Cancellations & Hertz Points
If you book a reservation using Hertz Points and you cancel it within 24 hours of booking, all Hertz Points will be returned to your account. If you book a reservation and cancel it more than 24 hours before pick-up time, the following points will be forfeited:
- Gold Member: 50%
- Five Star Member: 25%
- President's Circle Member: 0%
If you do not cancel your reservation prior to pick-up time and the vehicle is not picked up on the rental day, all points will be forfeited regardless of your membership level in the program.
Hertz Points Value Calculator
Use the Hertz Points Value Calculator to calculate the average cash value of your Hertz Points. The calculator will also output how many rental days you are eligible for based on the listed redemption rates.
Hertz Daily Rentals
Hertz daily rentals are day-to-day rentals. These rentals have a max of up to 4 rental days (otherwise it's considered a weekly rental). Daily rentals start at 750 points per day for Standard Rewards for standard vehicles. It's very easy to get great value out of daily, standard rentals. When booking standard rentals, be sure to maximize the standard car class. Why get an Economy when you can get a car from the Premium class and pay the same price?
For example, I could book anything between an Economy and Premium vehicle for around $90 to $100 per day (before taxes). At 750 points for a standard redemption, that's gives my Hertz Points a value of around 12-13 cent per point.
Looking at July, which is what Hertz considers to be 'peak time' for Detroit airport, the cash cost of the vehicles are about the same but it will cost double the points since you'll have to book an AnyDay Reward. This cuts the value of the points in half down to 6 cents per point which is still nice, but I personally wouldn't want to pay double the points for the same rental. I recommend that you avoid AnyDay Rewards whenever possible.
Hertz Weekly Rentals
Weekly rentals with Hertz are considered to be rentals that are 5 days or longer and they start at 3,750 Hertz Points per week for standard rentals. In order to get the best value out of weekly rentals, you'll want to try to get as close to seven rental days as possible. This is because a 5-, 6-, and 7-day rentals will generally cost you the same amount of points or cash.
For example, booking a car from DTW for 5-days in mid-august would cost me $86.72 per day which comes out to be $433.60 (before taxes).
Booking that same rental for 7-days would cost me $61.94 per day which comes out to be the same $433.58 (before taxes).
Since weekly rentals don't fluctuate in cost based on whether you pick 5, 6, or 7 days, I would get a value of 11.5 cents per Hertz Point out of this redemption regardless of how many days I choose for the weekly rental. You might as well get the most out of your points by going for the max of 7 days if you have the chance to.
Hertz One-Way Rentals
Hertz one-way rentals are rentals in which the pick-up location and drop-off location are different. These type of rentals can be on the expensive side depending on the distance between the two destinations and vehicle type. Hertz one-way rentals for Standard Rewards start at 1,500 Hertz Points per day. You can also book a one week one-way rental for 7,500 Hertz Points which can be a 5-, 6-, or 7-day rental.
Hertz Specialty Rentals
Hertz specialty class vehicles are luxury, midsize SUV, minivan and convertible types. Free weekend rental days for this class type starts at 1,500 Hertz Points per day for standard rentals and 7,500 Hertz Points per week for weekly rentals. These type of rentals will typically give you lower value than your standard redemptions, but it still offers good enough value if you want to splurge on a specialty vehicle.
Hertz Adrenaline Collection Rentals
Hertz Adrenaline Collection vehicles will cost you 2,200 Hertz Points per day which is almost 3 times the redemption rate of Standard Vehicles in the Compact-Premium class. This class consists of high performance sports cars such as Mustang, Camaro, and Corvette. Redeeming your rewards for Adrenaline Collection rentals will not be the best use of Hertz Points in terms of maximizing your value, but you'll have a good time driving these vehicles.
Hertz Prestige Collection Rentals
Hertz Prestige Collection consists of high-end, luxury vehicles such as Mercedes, Infiniti, and Range Rover. Renting these vehicles start at 2,500 Hertz Points per day or 12,500 Hertz Points per week. You'll burn through a lot of points with these rentals and they will typically give your points the lowest value.
Experiences and Events
Outside of car rentals, you can redeem your Hertz Points for experiences and events. This is done by either bidding for events using Hertz Points or purchasing tickets/access to an event at a set price. The value of these specific redemptions will solely depend on how much you value the actual events you're bidding for or purchasing.

Buying Hertz Points
Hertz Points can be purchased from the Hertz Website at a rate of $0.20 per point. You can buy as little as 50 Hertz Points for $10 and as many as 10,000 Hertz Points for $2,000. In order to buy Hertz Points, you must have at least 500 Hertz Points in your account. Buying Hertz Points requires you to print a form, fill it out, and fax it to them. This form is founded on the Purchase Points page which you can get to by clicking on your name after you've logged into your Hertz account.
Hertz Points are clearly nowhere near a value of 20 cents per point. I've been able to easily find redemptions that can give me a little over half that value, but nothing quite that high. Paying a few dollars to top off your account might be worth it, but buying lots of Hertz Points will more than likely be a bad idea unless you can redeem your points for more than 20 cents each.
Hertz Rental Car Insurance
Hertz offers their Collision Damage Waiver, also known as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), to you when you rent cars with them. This insurance protects you from paying out of pocket if your rental is stolen, vandalized, or damaged in a crash. While this is great insurance to have, the cost per day can be quite expensive and can add a lot of extra cost to your rentals.
Luckily, there's several credit cards that offer Primary Car Rental Insurance. When you pay the full cost of your rental with a credit card that offers Primary Car Rental Insurance, you can decline the costly protection Hertz and other rental car agencies charge and still be covered. Depending on how often you rent cars, this can save you hundreds per year.
Earn Cash Back On Hertz Rentals
You can earn additional rewards on top of your Hertz Points when you use cash back and shopping portals. This is an easy way to triple dip on rewards and maximize your earnings when booking with Hertz and shopping online in general.
Cash back and shopping portals are pretty easy to understand and they all work the same.
- Start at the cash back or shopping portal website
- Find Hertz and click Shop to start a new session
- You'll be taken to hertz.com to book your car rental as normal
- Once you've booked and completed your Hertz rental, the cash back site will be notified
- Cash back, miles, or points will be credited to your portal account
When going through cash back and shopping portals, you'll end up earning rewards with the portal, rewards with the credit card you're using, and Hertz Rewards Points all on a single booking.
I highly recommend reading up on using cash back portals for all travel and online shopping as it's helped me earn a significant amount of money in the past few years.
If you don't have an account with any of the leading cash back portals, you can help out the site and earn bonus cash back on your first purchases by signing up using the links below.
