Is The Ink Business Preferred Worth The Annual Fee?

If you spend heavy across the 3X categories on the card and you plan on redeeming your points for travel either through Chase Ultimate Rewards or point transfers, the card can easily be worth the $95 annual fee.

At bare minimum, you can redeem Ultimate Rewards Points for at least 1 cent each towards cash back. Spending $264 per month across the 3X categories on the card throughout the year would earn you about 9,500 points which is enough to wipe out the annual fee.

You can use the Chase Ink Business Preferred Point Calculator to get an idea of whether or not the card is best for you based on spend.

Chase 5/24 Rule

If you've opened up more than 5 new accounts in the last 24 months, it may be hard to get apporved for the Ink Business Preferred and other Chase credit cards. This includes any kind of new account and not just new credit card accounts.

If you're unsure of how many accounts you've opened up in the last 24 months, you can use Credit Karma to check for free without hurting you credit score.

Ink Business Preferred vs Ink Business Cash

Ink Business Cash

The Ink Business Cash® Credit Card earns Ultimate Rewards Points that can be redeemed for cash back at a value of 1 cent per point. It features the following categories and earning rates:

  • 5% Internet
  • 5% Cable Services
  • 5% Phone Services
  • 5% Office Supply Stores
  • 2% Restaurant
  • 2% Gas Station
  • 1% Everything Else

With the Ink Business Cash, you'll earn points at a higher rate of 5X on Internet, cable services, and phone services when compared to the Ink Business Preferred. The drawback is that points earned with the Ink Business Cash are worth 1 cent each as it does not feature the 25% point value boost that the Ink Business Preferred receives on travel redemptions made through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

The plus side is that if you own both the Chase Ink Business Preferred and Chase Ink Business Cash, you'll be able to redeem your points for 1.25 cents each no matter which card you earn points with. This can be well worth it if you spend heavy across the 5X categories and want to easily be able to redeem your points for 1.25 cents per point towards travel.

You can get even more value if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® which offers a 50% point value boost which bumps up your points to 1.5 cents each!

Ink Business Preferred vs Ink Business Unlimited

Ink Business Cash

The Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card earns Ultimate Rewards Points at a flat rate of 1.5% with points being redeemable for 1 cent each for cash back.

If you spend heavy across categories not featured on the Ink Business Preferred or Ink Business Cash, the Ink Business Unlimited will be the best option as you'll earn 1.5% on your purchases versus just earning 1%.

The best way to maximize your rewards and get the most value of the Ink Business Unlimited Card is by pairing it with another Ink Business Card. You can use the Ink Business Preferred or Ink Business Cash for the bonus categories featured on the card and then use the Ink Unlimited for all other purchases across categories not featured on the other Ink credit cards.

This allows you to always earn at least a minimum of 1.5% back on all purchases.
