The RBC Avion Rewards program is available to Avion cardholders. These cards offer two additional redemption options over those with standard RBC Rewards cards: The RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule and the ability to transfer points to partners.

This page primary covers RBC Avion Rewards points redemptions. You can check out our RBC Rewards Points Value page for details on standard RBC rewards redemptions.

What are RBC Avion credit cards?

RBC offers a total of 5 Avion credit cards in their RBC Rewards program. Those cards are:

All other rewards cards program are considered to be standard RBC Rewards credit cards and have access to all of the standard redemption options.

How much are RBC Avion points worth?

RBC Rewards points earned as an Avion cardholder are worth 2 to 2.33 cents each when redeemed using the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule. This means 10,000 Avion points have an average cash value of $200 to $233.

Points earned as an Avion cardholder can also be transferred to a few select transfer partners such as British Airways and Cathay Pacific which can easily yield high value.

All other redemptions such as gift cards, merchandise, and statement credits are part of the standard options and will give you 1 cent or lower in value. These should be avoided as an Avion cardholder.

Airfare redemptions via the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule

The Air Travel Redemption Schedule lists how many RBC Avion Rewards points it will cost you for a one-way or round-trip flight between different destinations around the world.

These redemptions offer Avion cardholders a value of 2 to 2.33 cents per point and is the best use of RBC Rewards points. Non-avion cardholders do not have access to this chart and can only redeem points at 1 cent each towards general travel.

How many RBC Avion points do you need for a flight?

The amount of Avion points you need for a flight using the Air Travel Redemption Schedule will depend on the destination. Redemptions start at 7,500 points for a one-way ticket and 15,000 points for a round-trip ticket.

The chart below details the route, how many Avion points it will cost you, the max ticket price, and the max value you can get out of each route.

Route Points Max Ticket Price Point Value
Within or to an adjacent province, territory, or U.S. state 15,000 Points $350 2.33 Cents
Anywhere in Canada/U.S. except Hawaii and Alaska 35,000 Points $750 2.14 Cents

Route Points Max Ticket Price Point Value

Anywhere in Canada/U.S. except Hawaii and Alaska 17,500 Points $375 2.14 Cents
Western Canada/U.S. to Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska -OR- Eastern Canada to Bermuda, Central America, Caribbean 22,500 Points $450 2 Cents

The rates for one-way tickets are just the round-trip tickets cut in half. There's no additional savings for booking a one-way ticket versus a round-trip ticket using the RBC Air Travel Redemptions Schedule.

How does the Air Travel Redemption Schedule work?

With the Air Travel Redemption Schedule, you will be able to redeem a set amount of Avion points for up to a maximum base ticket price. This is the base price of the flight and does not include taxes, fees, and other surcharges.

The goal is to redeem Avion points towards flights that are as close to or over the maximum ticket price in order to maximize the value of your RBC Rewards points.

Let's look at some examples for round-trip flights to Europe. Based on the Air Redemption Schedule Chart, this will cost you 65,000 RBC Avion Rewards points with a max ticket price of $1,300.

Example Europe Flight 1

  • Base Ticket Price: $1,000
  • Taxes, Fees & Carrier Surcharges: $250
  • Total Cost of Airline Ticket: $1,250

For this example, you would be able to redeem 65,000 RBC Avion Rewards points to cover the full base ticket price of $1,000 ticket since it's less than the max ticket price of $1,300. So the final out of pocket price would be the $250 in taxes/fees.

This example would give your Avion points a value of 1.53 cents each (65,000pts / $1,000). This isn't the best use of points since it offers less than 2 cents each in value, but it's still better than the 1 cent per point redemption for general travel redemptions.

Example Europe Flight 2

  • Base Ticket Price: $1,400
  • Taxes, Fees & Carrier Surcharges: $275
  • Total Cost of Airline Ticket: $1,675

The base ticket price of this flight exceeds the maximum ticket price, so you'll only be able to redeem 65,000 RBC Avion Rewards points on up to $1,300 of the base cost. This leaves you with a final base ticket price of $100 plus the $275 in taxes/fees for a final cost of $375.

Since you're able to redeem your points up to the max ticket price of $1,300, this example would give you a point value of 2 cents each which is excellent.

Do note that you will have the option to redeem additional points for the remaining base ticket cost of $100, but it will be at the general travel redemption value of 1 cent per point. If you're an Avion cardholder, I'd recommend paying out of pocket as this will drag down the value of your points.

RBC Avion point transfers to partners

As an Avion cardholder, RBC Rewards points can be transferred to frequent flyer programs in addition to the standard RBC travel partners. This includes British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and American Airlines.

British Airways Avios

Out of the small handful of frequent flyer programs, British Airways will be the hands-down best option when it comes to getting the most out of your Avion points via point transfers.

British Airways Avios offer exceptional value for short-haul trips in Europe and in the U.S. and Canada using American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. They're also great for long-haul trips in economy class.

Points earned with British Airways can also be transferred to Qatar Avios and redeemed for 5-star travel in Qatar's popular QSuites.

WestJet Dollars

WestJet is a major Canadian airline that is useful for domestic travel within Canada. Transferring points to WestJet will typically devalue your points and give you 1 cent in value, but it can be useful if you need to quickly top off your account.

Other ways to redeem RBC Avion points

All of the remaining redemption options are available for all RBC rewards members regardless of which RBC rewards credit cards you have. This means that the cost and value you get in RBC Avion points is the same as standard RBC Rewards points.

These redemptions offer 1 cent or lower in value per point and should be avoided as an Avion cardholder. If you're a non-Avion cardholder, these are all the redemptions you'll have access to.

RBC Travel Portal

RBC Avion points can be redeemed for general travel purchases through the RBC Travel portal at a conversion of 100 points for $1 CAD in travel. If you don't have enough points to cover the full cost, you can pay for travel using both your points and credit card.

rbc travel value

Merchandise

RBC Avion points can be redeemed for merchandise. The value you get out of redeeming your points will vary, but it will typically be less than 1 cent per point.

If you're looking to earn rewards redeemable for merchandise, I recommend considering cash back credit cards as you'll get a better return on your everyday spending when put towards these kind of redemptions.

RBC Financial Products

If you bank with RBC, you can redeem your RBC Avion points for financial products such as investments, mortgage payments, and lines of credit. Redemptions start at 12,000 RBC Avion points for a $100 voucher which is a value of 0.83 cents per point.

RBC Gift Cards

Gift Cards start at 3,500 RBC Avion Points for a $25 gift card which gives your points a value of 0.71 cents each. This is a solid redemption option for standard RBC Rewards points, but not so much for Avion points.

rbc rewards plus visa gift cards

Statement Credit

RBC Avion points can be redeemed for statement credits. You can redeem 17,200 points for a $100 credit which would give your points a value of 0.58 cents each.

This is one of the lowest redemption options and should be avoided for Avion points and standard RBC rewards points when possible.

Charity

RBC Avion points can be put towards charity donations at a value of 1 cent per point.

If you plan on redeeming your points for airfare or transferring points to airline partners, you'll want to consider standard RBC Rewards credit cards.
