Barclay Holland America Line
The Holland America Credit Card was made for users who regularly cruise their line. The only benefit this card offers is that it earns double points for Holland America purchases. It doesn't offer any additional benefits beyond that. There's no bonuses for running heavy spend, no status with Holland America, or any other perk that would make you want to put spend on this card.
Holland America (HAL) Reward Points
Reward points earned with the Holland America Credit Card can be used toward Holland America Cruise Line on-board amenities and credits, along with gift cards and merchandise. When these points are used for Holland America Cruise statement credits, the point value changes based on the amount of the purchase.
|Redemption Amount||Reward Point Value|
|$50 to $499.99||1 Cent|
|$500 to $1,499.99||1.25 Cents|
|$1,500 to $2,000.99||1.5 Cents|
|$2,001 to $4000.99||2 Cents|
These points become extremely valuable if you're redeeming them for cruises that cost more than $2,100. Assuming you're using the card for Holland America purchases, you're looking at a 4% return on Holland America purchases and a 5% return for $4,100+ redemptions. Once you get into these type of values, normal reward cards start to lose the ability to compete with providing a better return. The smaller redemptions on the other hand can easily be outdone by any normal travel card. Standard cruises will fall between $500 to $1,499.99 which will land you around a 2.5% return for Holland America purchases and a 1.25% return for non-category purchases. Cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve can earn similar or better returns thanks to their broad bonus category of 'travel' which covers cruise lines, hotels, airfare, and anything else categorized as such.
The Holland America Credit Card features one bonus category which is spending with Holland America Cruise Line. There is no limit to the amount of points you can spending in this bonus category and there is no limit to the amount of points you can earn using the card. Below are the details on points earned from Holland America Credit Card spend.
2x Holland America
Using the Holland America Credit Card for purchases with Holland America Cruise Line will earn 2 points per $1 spent. This includes on-board purchases as well. Depending on the value of the redemption, this can range from a 2% return to a 5% return. If you save your points for redemptions that cost $2,100+, then this card would work wonders for you when used to pay for Holland America Cruise. If you only deal with basic cruises which usually go from $500 to $1,500, you will get a value of about 2.5% per $1 spent which is still good but can be beat by a few reward cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Sam's Club Mastercard, and Citi ThankYou Premier cards. All of these cards earn more than a 3% return on travel purchases which includes Holland America purchases.
And spending on the Holland America Credit Card outside of the Holland Cruise Line will result in earning 1 point per $1 spent. This will range from a 1% return to a 2.5% return which is not that great. I would recommend picking up a card that offers either bonus categories in your most shopped in categories or a flat earning rate 1.5% or better credit card like the Citi Double Cash Card or the Capital One Quicksilver Card. There's lots of reward cards that can earn a better return and get you on Holland America Cruises faster than their own co-branded credit card.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the Holland America Cruise Line Card is 5,000 points after the first purchase. That is equal to a $50 on-board credit. This is a relatively easy sign up bonus to earn, but it is low. There are other cards such as the Capital One Venture Card which offers a $500 sign up bonus which could cut off a great deal of your Holland America cruise costs.
