The Barclaycard Apple Rewards Card earns points redeemable strictly for Apple Gift Cards or iTunes Gift Cards. The card earns Apple Rewards Points for every $1 in spend you run through the card with bonus points for Apple and Restaurant purchases. Every 2,500 points you build will earn you a $25 gift card. The Barclaycard Apple Rewards Card also offers the ability for Special Apple Deferred Financing. You can finance Apple Products between 6 to 18 months based on the cost of the item. You will not be charged any interest as long as you pay in full and don't miss any payments. Failure to pay or not paying before the end of the deferred interest promotion will dump all the interest you avoided onto the card at once.

How Apple Rewards Points Work

Barclay Apple Reward points are worth 1 cent each. These points can be redeemed for either an Apple Store Gift Card or an iTunes Gift Card. By default, Barclay Apple Reward Card holders will be issued a $25 Apple Gift Card by mail once 2,500 points are accumulated. Gift card preferences can be modified by the cardholder at any time. The option to change between an Apple Store and iTunes gift card as well as the ability to choose redemption denominations can be made either by logging into the account or with Barclaycard Customer Service. The options are 2,500 points for a $25 gift card, 5,000 points for a $50 gift card, or 10,000 points for a $100 gift card. Gift cards do not expire once awarded. Gift cards earned with the Barclay Apple Rewards Card can only be used in the United States.

Bonus Categories

The Barclay Apple Rewards Card features two bonus categories which are Apple purchases and restaurant purchases. Spending in either of these two categories will earn bonus Apple Reward Points. There is no limit to the amount of points you can earn spending on this card. Below are the details of both categories featured on the Apple Rewards Card.

3x Apple Purchases

The Barclay Apple Rewards Card earns 3 Apple Reward Points per $1 spent on Apple Purchases. Barclay considers Apple Purchases to be purchases made at Apple Stores, Apple.com, 1-800-My-Apple, and the iTunes Store. Earning 3 points is equal to a 3% return which is a really good since you'll have the ability to receive financing as well. If you do a great deal of shopping at Apple, this card can bring in the points but I do not recommend making small purchases on the card while you're financing other items due to how the deferred financing work (explained in Perks & Benefits section). This can cause payments to be missed or the card to not be paid off in-full by the due date which would dump a lot of unwanted interest onto your remaining balance.

When it comes to Apple Purchases, the Apple Rewards Card will generate one of the highest returns. Some retailers that offer co-branded credit cards could earn you a solid return on Apple Purchases such as the Best Buy Credit Card or Walmart Mastercard. Owners of the Business Rewards Gold Card can earn up to 3x Membership Reward Points which could be put towards travel for a rate of 1+ cents per point as well.

While I do own and use my Apple Rewards Card for smaller purchases, any big ticket items ($500+) I purchase from Apple or any other electronic retailer I put on my AMEX Platinum or AMEX Business Platinum Card. Both Platinum cards come with extended warranty, return protection, and purchase protection. I've had accidents happen and it's nice having the piece of mind that I'm covered for up to $10,000 per occurrence, $50,000 per calendar year. In my opinion, that's worth more than the few dollars I'll get using any other card. But if you're not one for luxury travel cards and choose financing, the Barclay Apple Rewards Card is just fine!

2x Restaurant

Spending at restaurants with the Apple Rewards Card will earn 2 Apple Reward Points per $1 spent. Apple considers restaurants to include both fine dining and fast food establishments. Pretty much anything coded as restaurant will trigger this bonus. Earning 2 points per $1 spent in this category will generate a 2% return. There are other cards with no annual fee that can do a lot better such as the Barclay Uber Card (4% cash back) and the Capital One SavorOne Card (3% cash back). Another thing worth noting is that if you're participating in the Apple Financing benefit, I would not recommend using this card for any type of restaurant or non-category spend. Non-Apple financing purchases on top of special financing will automatically get hit with the high interest APR rate since all payments are applied to financing first. While I do enjoy my Barclay Apple Rewards Card, I believe this category was added to get users caught up in paying interest. Again, I do not recommend using this card for restaurant or non-category purchases when there are active deferred financing present on the card.

1x Non-Category

Any spending on the Apple Rewards Card that's not with Apple or at restaurants will earn 1 Apple Reward Point per $1 spent. This is equal to a sad 1% return. I would not recommend putting any spend on this card since A) you can get a better return on most reward cards and B) if you have Apple Financing active, you will get caught up in paying high interest on this card which will wipe out the points you earned for running non-category spend through this card.

Perks and Benefits

Special Financing

The main perk of the Barclay Apple Rewards is the Special Deferred Financing received on purchases made with Apple. The financing period depends on the cost of individual products purchased. Purchases that qualify for Special Financing must be made at the Apple Store, Apple.com Online Store, or by calling 1-800-My-Apple. Apple Special Financing is broken down as followed:

Purchases Less Than $499

Purchases of items that are less than $499 will receive the 180 day no interest Apple Deferred Financing promotion for which interest will be deferred for 180 days provided that timely payments are made on the account and the Deferred Financing Purchase is paid in full on or before the 180th day after the applicable purchase date.

Purchases from $499 to $999

Purchases of items that fall between $499 and $999 will receive the 365 day no interest Apple Deferred Financing promotion for which interest will be deferred for 365 days provided that timely payments are made on the account and the Deferred Financing Purchase is paid in full on or before the 365th day after the applicable purchase date.

Purchases of $999 or More

Purchases of items that cost more than $999 will receive the 540 day no interest Apple Deferred Financing promotion for which interest will be deferred for 540 days provided that timely payments are made on the account and the Deferred Financing Purchase is paid in full on or before the 540th day after the applicable purchase date.

While this is a great benefit of the Barclay Apple Rewards Card, deferred financing does have huge drawbacks for anyone that does not follow the payment criteria. If the Deferred Financing Purchase is not paid in full by the Promotional End Date or if you make a late payment, interest charges will be assessed for the entire promotional period at the then applicable rate for Purchases during the promotional period. This means that the high APR interest will be dumped onto the card in full. If you are nearing the end of your Special Financing period and can't finish paying it off before the Promotional Due Date, I would recommend opening up a new card that features a 0% APR Balance Transfer such as the Citi Diamond or any of the Discover Cards such as the Discover IT or Discover IT Miles cards. Balance transfers to both cards usually take about a week or two, but could take longer depending on the bank so you will want to have applied for the card of your choosing at least a month before hand. I also recommend initiating the balance transfer at the time of applying for the card. Opening another card and paying a small 3% or less balance transfer fee is a lot better than being hit with a few hundred dollars in interest.

Using Apple Financing More Than Once

Do note that Apple Financing on this card can be used more than once. I've received Apple Financing on this card several times in the few years that I've owned it. Barclay will usually send out an email (especially around back-to-school season) that they re-initiated the financing perk on the card. You can also call or email Barclay and ask for Apple Financing to be initiated which is the route I usually go when I'm about to make an Apple Purchase within a week or so. Remember that Apple Special Financing is not automatic and that you will need to make sure it's activated on the card before using it to purchase products with Apple.

Sign Up Bonus

The sign up bonus for the Barclay Apple Rewards Card is the special financing perk mentioned above. The financing lasts for 30 days after being approved for the card. As a side note, I didn't use my Apple Financing when I first received the card. I didn't make an Apple purchase until a little more than two months later. Before making the purchase, I contacted Barclay and told them I didn't use the financing and asked if they could re-enable it. They enabled it that day (lasts for 30 more days) and I made my purchase which received Special Financing.

Credit Card Fees

Fees
Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Barclay Apple Rewards Card does not have an annual fee. Assuming you make timely payments and don't experience the wrath of the APR this card has, you'll always end up with a great return on Apple purchases.

Authorized User Fee

There is no authorized user fee to add users to the Barclay Apple Rewards Card. Adding users could be a little risky with the Apple Special Financing perk active. If your authorized users frequently buy stuff from Apple, this could be a benefit, but I'd be cautious as this may not be worth it if you end up paying interest on this card.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Barclay Apple Rewards Card has a foreign transaction fee of 3%. Using this card outside of the U.S. will evaporate the value of your points just as fast as you can swipe the card. I would not use this card for anything but Apple Purchases directly in the United States.
